What’s the deal with Kottaras?
His mlb.com profile has an Indians jersey next to it… conspiracy?

Nick is right, it HAS to be Marte. We’ve already been rumored to be after him (among others) where Boone has been absent from that discussion. Keep in mind Alderson has made a point that we are only pursuing 3B we can control beyond this season. Boone is a FA after this season; specifically the type of guy Alderson said we were NOT after. And we’ve also said we’re not going after a guy who isn’t at least average defensively (that removes Blake from the 3B discussion).
July 22, 2006 at 11:47 am
Kotteras and Wells seems like too high of a price to pay for Mike Lowell…I don’t see that happening. I’m with Peter–I hope that the deal is for Marte.
July 22, 2006 at 12:50 pm
To add to the conspiracy…Kottaras hasn’t played since the 18th in Portland. Wells pitched last night (very well and got the win).
July 22, 2006 at 12:59 pm
If the Indians were able to trade anyone but Marte for Wells & Kottaras, it would be an absolute steal.
Just a hunch here, but the Pads have too many smart guys (Alderson, KT, Fuson, and now DePo) to get fleeced that badly.
July 22, 2006 at 2:37 pm
Hmm…if you search “Marte” on milb.com, no team appears next to Andy’s name:
http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....=0&y=0
He’s still on Buffalo’s roster page though.
July 22, 2006 at 3:06 pm
Marte’s name has been doing that on milb.com all season long. I have him on a fantasy team, so I looked back in April and check in throughout the season…nice try, though.
July 22, 2006 at 4:18 pm
“catcher George Kottaras missed a third game after suffering a neck contusion from a foul ball Tuesday in Tucson.”
http://www.oursportscentral.co.....id=3349209
that explains one thing, Indians thing still looks weird though

July 22, 2006 at 5:14 pm
Who did we give up for Scott Williamson? What do you all think will be his contribution? And do you think this deal frees us up enough to deal Linebrink in a much larger trade?
July 22, 2006 at 5:22 pm
huh? we got Williamson?
July 22, 2006 at 5:31 pm
here’s what rotoworld.com is saying …
ESPN is reporting that the Padres have acquired RHP Scott Williamson from the Cubs for two prospects.
The prospects are supposed to be A-ball pitchers. There isn’t a contender in baseball with less need of relief help than San Diego, so this is likely to set up another move. Either Williamson will go elsewhere or the Padres will move another reliever (Scott Linebrink?) in an attempt to land a third baseman. Jul. 22 - 8:07 pm et

Two minor league pitchers I’ve never heard of for Williamson:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=2527276
This has to be a move-to-make-a-move, right?
July 22, 2006 at 5:31 pm
I knew someone would beat me to it!
July 22, 2006 at 5:31 pm
Ah, here’s the ESPN link … http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=2527276 … The Cubs get 19-year old lefty Fabian Jimenez Angulo and 22-year old righty Joel Santo from Class A Fort Wayne. Angulo is 5-7 with a 4.43 ERA. Santo is 5-6 with a 5.51 ERA.
July 22, 2006 at 5:32 pm
I wish I knew
July 22, 2006 at 5:35 pm
This can’t really “free up Linebrink”, can it? No way is Williamson currently comparable to Linebrink!
July 22, 2006 at 5:40 pm
As of right now, I’d bet money (ok, not really, I’m not a betting man, but it sounds good) that we’re shipping Linebrink and keeping Williamson.
Go to my website for more analysis - I’ll have something up in 5-10 minutes.

July 22, 2006 at 5:41 pm
Yeah, that’s the only thing I’m worried about, other than that this trade looks fine to me, esp. if it gets us closer to a 3B solution. The two guys we gave up look like scrubs (one with more BB than Ks, the other close), does anyone know if either of these guys had a future?
July 22, 2006 at 5:42 pm
two Single A pitchers.. I just heard about from the Reds-Brewers MLB.tv game

Great analysis Peter. My question would be, if Linebrink is moved, who takes over as main setup/chief high-leverage guy. I just don’t know that the Padres have another guy (even including Williamson) who I would “trust” in that role, i.e. a guy who can miss bats and doesn’t shy away from pressure. It would seem to me that Williamson’s walk rate precludes him from that spot.
July 22, 2006 at 6:07 pm
I think Williamson would be that guy. I betting that the Padres think Williamson’s walk rate is passably acceptable and that his lack of HRs balence it out. Chicago is a better fielding team than I figured, so I wondered how many of his “earned” runs would come off the board with a better fielding team. But we’re rated #2 (on BaseballProspectus.com) and they’re tied for #3. Plus, middle relievers are traditionally beaten up and discarded. I think Linebrink is pretty beat up, and trading him now and getting something for him would be a lot better than letting him walk and get nothing down the road.
July 22, 2006 at 6:12 pm
Thanks, Peter … Williamson didn’t pitched much in 2004 + 2005 … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/pl.....8f2_6FCLcF … rotoworld.com notes indicate he’s had some elbow issues this season … anyone know if there were health issues in ‘04 + ‘05?

July 22, 2006 at 6:23 pm
I haven’t heard while Giles is out (yesterday and today) … what’d I miss?
July 22, 2006 at 6:26 pm
I love Khalil, but boy can you get frustrated watching some of his ABs. You can tell he’s trying to be selective…but it seems like he’s choosing the wrong spots. It’s ok to swing at that pitch down the middle 2-0, but you have to lay off the 3rd straight pitch in the dirt 2-2. Easy enough for me to say, right?
July 22, 2006 at 6:26 pm
Good analysis Peter. I sure hope Alderson and KT have a plan. I’m a little nervous right now — what with the “Boone to the Padres” rumors flying around.
But it appears that we’re going to do something, which is a good sign. The Giants just got Hillenbrand, and I think the Pads have to respond to that.
Nick W. — maybe Brocail takes over that setup role. A little scary, but he did pitch 3 scoreless last night. I can’t really think of anyone else — Williamson does have experience there.
Unless they’re freeing up a spot, b/c they’re going to trade someone on the ML roster for Marte. I don’t know . . . just thinking out loud.
It wouldn’t be a bad thing to have Williamson AND Liney.
July 22, 2006 at 6:27 pm
Bowen over Bard seems questionable when the lineup is already depleted … I found a note that mentioned Giles is out with a “tight right hamstring”.
July 22, 2006 at 6:27 pm
GIles has something wrong with his foot I think. He sat last night because Bochy wanted to give him a bit of rest.
July 22, 2006 at 6:27 pm
LM — Williamson had arm problems in 04 and 05
July 22, 2006 at 6:30 pm
Interesting tidbit on Scott Williamson and the Braves as a possibilitiy from Ken Rosenthal at foxsports.com
The Braves’ acquisition of closer Bob Wickman didn’t end their pursuit of relief help. The team would like to acquire another reliever, preferably a left-hander. However, the Braves would settle for a righty who can get lefties out.
Both the Cubs’ Scott Williamson and Marlins’ Joe Borowski fit that description. Left-handed hitters are batting .172 against Williamson, .180 against Borowski. But the Padres acquired Williamson on Saturday night for two minor leaguers.

July 22, 2006 at 6:48 pm
So all that “We’ll go with 11 pitchers” was just crap, they knew they were getting another arm I’m sure
Williamson is a good arm though.

The Giants broadcast on Fox just asked a good trivia question:
Who were the players involved in the last trade between the Padres and the Giants?
July 22, 2006 at 7:20 pm
Woody just misses a homer.
July 22, 2006 at 7:20 pm
the helmet woody’s using is Geoff Blum’s you can see the 27
July 22, 2006 at 7:21 pm
yea geoff, he caught a hanger or two
July 22, 2006 at 7:22 pm
Stu: It’s not the Kevin Mitchell deal, is it?
BTW, I love the Williamson acquisition.
July 22, 2006 at 7:24 pm
Herges for Hensley?
July 22, 2006 at 7:25 pm
correct.
Herges for Hensley, how’d that work out?
July 22, 2006 at 7:25 pm
Good call. Totally spaced on Herges for Hensley.
Nice to see Sledge is still having trouble playing the outfield.
July 22, 2006 at 7:28 pm
Courtesy of AFLAC, it was indeed Herges for Hensley (and someone identifed only as R.D. Spiehs). I thought it was the Mitchell deal, and couldn’t remember who the Pads got. Mark Davis and Mark Grant, I think. Anyone else?
July 22, 2006 at 7:35 pm
OF Brian Giles got a day off to rest his tight right hamstring. That refers to yesterday, as seen on padresnation.com
July 22, 2006 at 7:35 pm
What a shot by Cameron.
From Baseball-Reference.com:
July 5, 1987: Traded by the San Diego Padres with Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts to the San Francisco Giants for Chris Brown, Keith Comstock, Mark Davis, and Mark Grant.

July 5, 1987: The Padres traded Kevin Mitchell, Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts to the San Francisco Giants for Chris Brown, Keith Comstock, Mark Davis, and Mark Grant. The Giants received a MVP, the Padres received a Cy Young Award winner.

What the heck is Khalil swinging at there?
July 22, 2006 at 7:44 pm
Wow, that is some terrible baserunning.
July 22, 2006 at 7:47 pm
Entering tonight
Padres team leaders in grounded into DP’s
Adrian Gonzalez 16
Khalil Greene 11
Mike Piazza 10
Gonzalez should have stopped/slowed but oh well.
July 22, 2006 at 7:47 pm
Blum makes a terrible throw to first on a grounder by Alou. Play somehow is ruled a base hit.
July 22, 2006 at 7:48 pm
another Giant down, Moises Alou.. pulled a hammy looks like.
these Giants would be a threat if they weren’t so injury prone.
July 22, 2006 at 7:48 pm
I bet Andy Marte makes that play
July 22, 2006 at 7:49 pm
anyone have any other idea why Kottras and all the others are Indians
July 22, 2006 at 8:02 pm
Giants broadcasters just said Alou aggravated a hamstring. Have to admit I was surprised to see Bonds in the lineup tonight. The Giants’ 40-something outfield unit must go through a lot of Icy Hot.

Despite my best wishes, I’m thinking that maybe its just a bug?
But this is weird, the jpeg for all three is:

But if you look at the jpeg for each of the Padres that have a Padre jersey, they’re all different:
Mike Adams:

Brocail: http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com.....111492.jpg

Nice job by Woody to work out of the jam.
July 22, 2006 at 8:37 pm
Terrible situational hitting in the eighth. Why didn’t Sledge even try to lay down a sacrifice bunt?
July 23, 2006 at 12:50 am
The Williamson deal just makes the Cincinatti GM look that much worse. He’s as valuable this year as either pitcher that the Nats gave up and the Padres got him for two Low-A pitching prospects…
July 23, 2006 at 8:18 am
From Buster Olney’s blog today:
The Padres’ deal for Scott Williamson means that San Diego has a couple of options. They could merely fold Williamson into their bullpen and have more depth, or they are now in a better position to listen to offers for set-up man Scott Linebrink, at a time when teams are salivating for bullpen help. Linebrink will make $1.75 million in 2007, as part of a contract he signed 18 months ago, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they talked to the Astros about a Linebrink-for-Morgan Ensberg trade
