IGD: Padres vs Cubs (8 May 06)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Chris Young (2-2, 3.53 ERA) vs Greg Maddux (5-1, 2.35 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com | ESPN

Padres try to extend their winning streak to nine and sweep another series. If they’re going to do it, it’ll have to be against a future Hall of Famer. Pads are outhitting the opposition, .263/.339/.406 to .195/.258/.309, and outscoring them, 38-16, in the month of May. Sounds like a pretty good recipe for success to me.

Always take the extra base on Juan Pierre. Walk, stolen base, single back through the middle: 1-0, nobody out.

Now the Padres are hitting Maddux?

Nobody else in the league can beat this guy, and the Padres break out for two before he even gets an out.

The Cubs outfield cost Maddux the 2nd run…now his location looks shaky at best..

Crap. Piazza swings at ball four, Giles caught stealing. We’ll take two runs but that could’ve been ugly.

I’m guessing blown hit and run… Trying for the really big inning.

Or just trying to avoid the double play when Piazza hits the ground ball.

Heckuva play by Hairston on Barfield’s grounder. I thought that was a base hit.

I thought the same thing….very impressive to throw him out with his momentum going towards 3rd base…

Wow, Giles IW’d in front of Piazza??? That says something …

Piazza delivering a single … that says something else!

    Maybe it’s just May?

The way Piazza is hitting lately, I’d walk Giles to pitch to Piazza…

Greene is on pace to hit about 30 homers and bat .226. He’s like Dave Kingman at shortstop with a good glove.

    Khalil’s ‘06 line: .226/.333/.425

    Rob Deer’s career line: .220/.324/.442

I always liked Rob Deer. If only he had played gold glove caliber defense at shortstop

And what’s with the bats coming alive against the guy on my fantasy team?

    Nice comp, Richard.

Ah, it’s good to be in May again…

Get Maddux out of there. He’s killing me!

Btw, that’s a .274 EQA for Greene and a .267 EQA by Deer.

Maddux came in with a 2.35 ERA. It is over 3.00 now.

Will facing a lefty get Vinny going? It would be sweet to have a laugher.

Whoa, did you see Barfield turn that thing? To say nothing of Khalil’s great stop. Holy smokes!

It’s fun to have a laugher. Club seems like it’s really playing with some confidence. Great to watch. We’ll be able to watch the Khalil/Barfield/Gonzalez DP again on Sportcenter tonight. BTW Geoff, I read the earlier analysis post. Nicely done.

From the AP game recap …

Greene hit a towering shot into the balcony on the second floor of the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse just beyond the left-field corner at Petco Park.

    … *POWER*!

    I s’pose this says something also …

Despite the Padres’ winning streak and Maddux’s appearance, the game drew only 24,139 fans.

    … ???

24k fans at the game isn’t a huge surprise…there were good crowds all weekend and it’s a Monday night game. But still another great win for the team….let’s keep it rolling..

    Talk about schizophrenic; Pads record:

    OD to 4/23: 8-10 (W, L), 77-89 (RS, RA)
    4/24 to 4/29: 0-6, 5-21
    4/30 to present: 9-0, 52-24

So, looking at the drought vs. the streak:

RS per game: 0.83 vs. 5.78
RA per game: 3.50 vs. 2.67

So, our pitching has been steady, improved significantly (almost a run per game), but the hitting is freakish. True, small sample sizes, but this team seems to a very high correlation among its hitters. All hitting or all sucking.
