IGD: Padres vs Brewers (9 May 06)
Tue, May 9, 2006by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Clay Hensley (1-2, 4.28 ERA) vs Doug Davis (2-2, 5.35 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com | ESPN
Padres shoot for 10 in a row as the Brewers come to town. Clay Hensley makes his first start since being hit in the back of the head by a broken bat. I’m not a big fan of nicknames, but I think I’ll make an exception for Hensley. You get hit in the head by a broken bat and stay in the game, you deserve a nickname. Here’s my lame attempt: “Only a Flesh Wound”; surely, you can come up with something better?

Just saw that Greene-Barfield DP. Pretty sweet.
Pads are leading the NL in fielding percentage. Nice!

Headcase? Headbanger? Knight of the living head? Mr. Head?
May 9, 2006 at 6:57 pm
seems like a natural, since he apparently didnt get injured from a hard blow from that bat, “ROCKHEAD” or something simular

“Knight of the Living Head”? That’s terrible; I think we have a winner.

“It’s Headley!” Think Blazing Saddles folks.

I love the very first Kottaras response. It’s classic Bull Durham!
“It’s been going pretty good so far. I’ve just been going up there and keeping it really simple, trying to put good swings on balls. I’ve been trying to put the ball on the barrel and good things have been happening. You can’t really get caught up with when things are going really well or when they’re not. The key is just to keep steady and maintain some kind of consistency. Streaks go both ways.”
That boy’s been working on his cliches.

Fantastic at-bat by Gonzalez.

What is up with Castilla? Down by 1, leading off, against a wild pitcher with high pitch counts swings at the first pitch, out of the strike zone. Isn’t a veteran supposed to be smart?

That is my one fear about the Brewers: Carlos Lee. Lee is great, especially this year.
May 9, 2006 at 8:39 pm
and this is why the Brewers have hit the most HR’s in the NL

Glad to see nice, patient at bats to get Davis’ pitch count up. This is infuriating me.

GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEENE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His batspeed startles me, at times.

Eh Hoffman gives it up, his ERA goes from .77 to 1.54

Never should have come to this. So many opportunities against Davis.

Normally not a fan of the sac, but Barfield not getting down the sac in 9th really hurt. Who knows, but AGon’s DP might have been through if the infield was not at DP depth.
A 10th inning rally?

Not tonight. Bummer to lose. I had a very sick feeling when Coskie took two pretty good looking change ups that just missed, forcing a fastball to that he hammered. Lee is just good; the change he hit was at his feet. Colorado lost, but it is a bit of buzzkill to lose. Kind of reminds you what an anemic line up looks like, but let’s hope they get back on the horse tomorrow.

No Cirillo comments? I’ve got one … nice to see that he got CS’d by Piazza

Portland Beavers get 1 hit tonight … luckily it was a HR by Manny Alexander and it was good enough for a 1-0 win! http://tinyurl.com/s7kjg … Mike Thompson had another good start (but I never hear his name in the context of being a “prospect”) … and Jon Adkins has 7 saves to go with his 11 scoreless IPs … go Beavs!
May 9, 2006 at 10:53 pm
Neil Jamison’s already had one promotion this season (from Ft Wayne to Lake Elsinore) … perhaps another isn’t far behind … http://tinyurl.com/qh3xc … 17 K’s in 13.2 IP, resulting in 9 Saves …

Here’s an interesting note from the daily email I get from the Portland Beavers …
Big insurance run last night: Jack Cust’s sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning last night not only gave the Beavers an insurance run in their 7-5 win, but it made a major impact on the first two games of the homestand. By Padres organizational rule, any reliever who works three consecutive days must rest the next two. Closer Jon Adkins earned saves on Saturday and Sunday at Grizzlies Stadium, and he would have taken the mound in the bottom of the 11th if Portland had held just a one-run lead — meaning he would be unavailable tonight and tomorrow night. Cust’s scoring fly ball gave Portland a two-run lead, and sidearmer Cla Meredith came out of the ‘pen and earned his first save for the Beavs.

Lynch…couldn’t resist a Cirillo dig over at San Diego Spotlight…although he is not the Brewer really asking for ridicule…
