IGD: Padres @ Dodgers (4 May 06)

first pitch: 7:10 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Clay Hensley (1-2, 5.48 ERA) vs Brett Tomko (3-1, 4.20 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com | ESPN

Almost seven years ago, Brett Tomko was involved in one of my absolute favorite Padres moments. In the third inning of a game at Qualcomm Stadium, with Tomko on the mound for the Reds, Eric Owens executed a straight steal of home. The photo in the linked article (no, not the one of R*ben R*vera) doesn’t begin to do it justice.

I know he wasn’t all that a great player, but I miss Owens.

Yikes, that was scary. I hope Hensley is okay.

Dang it! This never should have happened. Those maple bats need to be outlawed. Hensley just got hit in the head with a bat barrel! We’ve all been looking at those things shatter into shards and fly all over the infield for years now. It shouldn’t take someone getting hit with one to get rid of them.

How’s that for an irrational, knee jerk response? But seriously, those things ARE dangerous.

I guess he’s okay; he just took Kenny Lofton to the warning track in center.

Navarro got hit with a foul ball so they pinch hit for him…Alomar came into the game to take his spot.

    It’s okay, Mark, you’re among friends. ;-)

LM: Navarro got dinged on a foul ball off the bat of Castilla, had to be removed from the game. Alomar is in there now.

    Astounding stats:

    – Greene hitting .207 … Piazza hitting .211
    – Giles slugging .363 … Castilla slugging .326 … OK, maybe that last one’s not astounding … but you get the idea …

    :-(

C’mon Clay … WAY TO GO!!!

    From my perspective, here’s a thing o’ beauty …

Furcal walked. Furcal was caught stealing, catcher Piazza to second baseman Barfield

… even if I do have Furcal in DS#2 :-)

Nice piece of hitting by Barfield, taking Tomko down the right-field line on a 1-2 pitch.

Hensley lifted for Blum; fantastic, gutsy performance from Hensley.

Tomko gets Roberts to gound back to him on pitch #124 to end the threat in the 7th … sigh …

Or anyone not named Geoff Blum?

  25. Ryguy
    Posted May 4, 2006 at 9:17 pm | Permalink

Blum was a good call to go in there.. he gets pull happy and Boch was probably thinking he can hit a fly ball or fast grounder that can score at least one. I can live with that call..

Letting tomko go this far will hurt him int he long run, then again I don’t know the dodger schedule but he should get 5days rest.

Khalil put a beeeeeeautiful swing on that hanging breaking ball. Nice to make the Dodgers pay for it.

Maybe that might break Greene out of his slump.

Greene has missed many pitches recently.. he fouled off a few hangers before tonight and has missed other pitches he could pound the week before.

    Posted May 4, 2006 at 9:40 pm | Permalink

missed I mean by a fat pitch that just hangs up there and greene either fouled off or hit a fly ball or grounder. Pitches that could potentially be homers.. he did it a few times int he Met series I remember that and he’s done it before too..

*I feel bad for Hensley, hell of a performance on a small pitch # and a ND.. lucky I don’t have him in the DS NL Only league.
