Tue, Apr 25, 2006by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Claudio Vargas (1-1, 8.25 ERA) vs Jake Peavy (1-2, 4.32 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com | ESPN
Sorry for the delay! Lineups are posted. Eric Young leads off and plays left field, Doug Mirabelli catches and bats eighth; everything else is the same as usual. Steer clear of Luis Gonzalez (.406/.472/.906 in 41 AB against Jake Peavy), and go Padres!

I didn’t like those balls and strikes calls against Jake. Or, the balls being called that were sure close to strikes.

Not to be paranoid, but the second pitch from Vargas to Peavy was outside, and it looks like the ump called it just to send Peavy a message. BTW, our catching is pretty anemic.

What is the deal with Bochy’s infatuation with Eric Young? If you aren’t going to play Roberts in LF (and the only reason you don’t play him is if he is hurt) then why not play the future in Ben Johnson instead of the past. Until the Padres start to develop young hitters — and this falls squarely on Bochy — then they aren’t going to be successful since they won’t spend enough money in free agency to get enough marquee established players.

As a break from a no longer amusing game, this mildly amusing note: Brett Tomko just had a PH appearance for the Dodgers in the 12th inning against Houston. Struck out.

Here’s what was in the AP game story notes …
Padres RHP Chris Young stands a good chance of making his scheduled start on Friday after having a positive response to medication for reduced blood flow to an artery in his pitching thumb, said manager Bruce Bochy. … Padres OF Dave Roberts was given the night off because of swelling in his left knee, but he was expected to be in the lineup Wednesday.
