IGD: Padres @ Marlins (11 Apr 06)
Tue, Apr 11, 2006by Geoff Young
first pitch: 1:05 p.m., PT
television: none
matchup: Woody Williams (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs Sergio Mitre (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com | ESPN.com
The Padres hit the road following a season-opening home stand that can charitably be described as disastrous. In the five games at Petco Park, they were outhit, .306/.362/.544 to .229/.298/.357, and outscored, 36 to 19. The bright spots on offense have been Brian Giles and Adrian Gonzalez. And all you need to know about the pitching is that some of the best performances so far have come from Scott Cassidy, Alan Embree, and Chan Ho Park.
Woody Williams gets the call today out of the bullpen in place of the injured Shawn Estes. According to the North County Times, Williams has been working on a knuckleball. Apparently no less an authority than Doug Mirabelli, who caught knuckler Tim Wakefield in Boston, has called Williams’ pitch “excellent.”
On the other side of the diamond, Florida is also off to a 1-4 start, although theirs is due more to luck than being dominated by the Rockies. The Marlins have scored just as many runs (21) as they’ve allowed. Rookies Hanley Ramirez and Josh Willingham are leading the charge on offense, and Miguel Cabrera is always a threat, as is youngster Jeremy Hermida. Former Padres Miguel Olivo and Matt Herges now play for the Marlins.
And speaking of San Diego connections, today’s starter, Mitre, is a local product (sweet, he has his own Wikipedia page) acquired this off-season from the Cubs in a deal that sent Juan Pierre to Chicago. Mitre, just 25 years old, spun six shutout innings in his first start of the season, notching the Marlins’ lone victory thus far, an 11-2 shellacking of the Astros exactly one week ago.
Today, something has to give. One of these teams will walk away with their second win of the young season. The other will just walk away.

It will be interesting to see if Piazza stays in for all three games in this series because of the Eastern times of the games 405, 105, 105.
April 11, 2006 at 12:58 pm
Also today.. Padres CEO Sandy Alderson (alum) visited Dartmouth for a lecture/Q&A session on baseball and business.
April 11, 2006 at 1:09 pm
BPro ranks the Padres dead last in MLB for the first week. Harsh but fair I suppose.
When you’re rocked by the Rockies to the point that Jake Peavy’s line starts to resemble Dewon Brazelton’s line, you know it’s been a rough week (memo to Kevin Towers: you have seen the back of Brazelton’s baseball card before, no?). With Ryan Klesko down for 2-4 months with shoulder surgery, Adrian Gonzalez gets his shot, which might be a good thing, though PECOTA sees only a .254/.313/.411 line in his crystal ball. With Shawn Estes bound for the DL, bringing back both Chan Ho Park and Woody Williams, things may get worse before they get better.
I’ll say right now that if AGon doesn’t hit better than .254 I’ll eat a Sean Burroughs jersey.
April 11, 2006 at 1:16 pm
yea I saw that on BP . but I think their projection for Gonzalez looks a bit low right now I think he can hit .259-.264 range.
April 11, 2006 at 1:43 pm
Homer. Khalil.
April 11, 2006 at 1:50 pm
Anyone watching? Seen any knucklers?
Anyone else have problems posting comments this morning?
April 11, 2006 at 1:51 pm
Hey, for any of you DS#2′ers out there … Edwin Encarnacion, Reds 3B, hit a grand slam today
April 11, 2006 at 1:52 pm
News on former Padres … Chris Hammond got 2 guys out today … t hus lowering his ERA to 72.00 …
April 11, 2006 at 2:04 pm
hah. nice Lynch mob.. anyone know where Marlins CFer Reggie Abercrombie’s throw went.. I think it’s still sailing off toward the Padre dugout.
April 11, 2006 at 2:09 pm
Ryguy … you in DS#2?
Sledge with an RBI … Padres up 2-1 batting in top o’ 4th …
April 11, 2006 at 2:12 pm
The Weighted Mean projection which you cited is conservative by its nature.
April 11, 2006 at 2:27 pm
what’s DS#2?
April 11, 2006 at 2:32 pm
Coleman is discussing the possible bunt. Why give a guy an out after he lets the first two batters get on base?
April 11, 2006 at 2:35 pm
Mitre can’t seem to find the plate.
April 11, 2006 at 2:36 pm
Three run shot!
April 11, 2006 at 2:37 pm
I can’t believe I forgot to put him back in my starting lineup…
April 11, 2006 at 2:37 pm
no doubt about that one.
April 11, 2006 at 2:38 pm
but what is DS#2? did I miss something?
April 11, 2006 at 2:40 pm
Ry,
I think that is a reference to the Ducksnorts Fantasy League #2.
April 11, 2006 at 2:41 pm
oh . I’m in the NL Only. I’m “East Coast RedFoxes”
April 11, 2006 at 2:41 pm
Single day rate stats are useless, but still entertaining (at least to me).
Khalil is slugging 2.667 this afternoon.
April 11, 2006 at 2:42 pm
I got shut out of both
Anyone watching video of this game? Only have Gameday here at the office.
April 11, 2006 at 2:44 pm
I’m watching video .. florida FSN. it just got screwy then I logged back on, right in time for Khalil Greene’s 3run shot.
April 11, 2006 at 2:46 pm
Woody is starting to look like Woody again.
April 11, 2006 at 2:48 pm
Williams gone after 68 pitches and only 5 innings.
April 11, 2006 at 2:48 pm
please. let’s see the yank. Boch. take him out.
April 11, 2006 at 2:49 pm
Bruce … are you in DS#2? (yes, this means the Yahoo Ducksnorts League #2)
Ryguy … or anyone else watching the game … seen Woody float any knucklers?
Marlins rallying off Embree in bottom of 6th … currently 5-2 …
April 11, 2006 at 2:50 pm
If it were Chris Young, Bochy would have yanked him after the first double to the AAA SS instead of letting him face the best two hitters on the team. But Bochy must have had confidence in his “gritty veteran” (TM) to get out of the jam. *sigh*
April 11, 2006 at 2:50 pm
haven’t seen any knucklers. I’m guessing woody would break em out if Mirabelli was in there. now Embree is in to face the lefty Jacobs. then maybe Hensley..
gotta build that bridge to Linebrink and Trevor
April 11, 2006 at 2:51 pm
Wow, that was a messed up comment …
Bruce … I see you’ve said you didn’t get in either league … bleh … sorry ’bout that …
And now i see that the rally’ing was off Woody … we’ll see how Embree does in his relief … it’s grim … 2-on 0-out …
April 11, 2006 at 2:51 pm
Bruce, I think Woody did have a good groove and he was only through five and threw around 70 so Boch wanted to see if he can try and work through it.,
April 11, 2006 at 2:53 pm
Embree gets a line-out-double-play! Now 1-on, 2-out! Yes, the bridge is building
April 11, 2006 at 2:54 pm
Ry, I hear you, but the double standard is glaring. Woody hasn’t been streched out in at least two weeks, and Bochy wants to tax him in that climate? CYoung was in a good groove the other night two, but Bochy didn’t hesitate to yank him.
April 11, 2006 at 2:56 pm
5-3 … Willingham with RBI single …
April 11, 2006 at 2:56 pm
I would have left Woody in after the double, too. He hadn’t thrown 70 pitches and had looked good until then.
April 11, 2006 at 2:58 pm
Nince job by Embree to get out of that jam. It’d be nice to get those runs back.
April 11, 2006 at 3:01 pm
As long as we are bringing up absurd Khalil stats…he is on pace for 108 HR and 270 RBI
April 11, 2006 at 3:03 pm
The black holes in the #1 and 2 spots are getting old quick. Guzman is off to a nice start in Portland (showing some power). Maybe.
April 11, 2006 at 3:03 pm
If you adjust for park effects, he’s bound to hit them at a higher rate than he has at PetCo & Dolphin Stadium.
April 11, 2006 at 3:04 pm
I think 108 is a realistic # for Khalil.. and yea Jon S I think this lineup needs to be tinkered with (Sledge move somewhere) before Cameron returns
April 11, 2006 at 3:04 pm
Guzman deserves a shot.
April 11, 2006 at 3:05 pm
Well, we got one back.
April 11, 2006 at 3:06 pm
I’d bat DR ninth.
April 11, 2006 at 3:09 pm
I would like to see AGon in the #2 hole and Sledge/BJ in #6 or 7 unitl Cam gets back. The problem is still where to hide Vinny other than stuffing him in his locker.
April 11, 2006 at 3:10 pm
I’d bat Vinny seventh in front of the pitcher.
April 11, 2006 at 3:12 pm
I’m a HUGE Guzman fan … I hope he ends up in Padres’ LF … it’d be gravy if he’d hit lead-off with .370+ OBP … he’s fun fast!
April 11, 2006 at 3:13 pm
Hensley in for bottom of 7th …
April 11, 2006 at 3:13 pm
I’d be happy with anyone who has a .370+ OBP for the Padres.
April 11, 2006 at 3:14 pm
Giles is currently the only Padre capable of such an achievement.
April 11, 2006 at 3:14 pm
Barfield
Khalil
Giles
Piazza
AGon
Vinny
Ben J./TS
DJ/Cam
April 11, 2006 at 3:14 pm
Come on Hensley, get your mojo back.
April 11, 2006 at 3:16 pm
or..if Guzman
Guz
Barfield/Cam
Giles
Piazza
Agon
Khalil
Vinny
DR/Barfield
April 11, 2006 at 3:20 pm
Another BP writer took a shot a Braz today …
Early-going extremes: What were the Padres thinking when they sent for the services of Dewon Brazelton? Thanks in part to his initial effort, they have the worst team ERA in the majors after the season’s first week.
Brazelton is not the sort of pitcher a team has to trade for. He’s more usually the sort that comes to you with hat in hand, asking for a shot at a job. So, you’ve got two problems: 1) you want him; 2) you’re willing to send something for him in return, even though it’s what’s left of Sean Burroughs. No, make that three problems: 3) You put him in your starting rotation.
All the Padres had to do was look at Brazelton’s ten best comps at baseball-reference.com and therein would they find a cautionary tale. Without resorting to complicated calculations, a simple look at the combined career won-loss record for the ten will show a count of 89-179. PECOTA’s top three comps for Brazelton include one overlapping name with baseball-reference (Sean Douglass) along with Jesse Jefferson and Joaquin Benoit. What else, really, did San Diego need know?
… which I don’t think is off the mark! But I hope that Dewan and Balsley show that there is more to know …
April 11, 2006 at 3:21 pm
Roberts, Giles, Barfield, Greene, Cameron would be an interesting top of the lineup.
April 11, 2006 at 3:22 pm
Well I don’t feel that we will have missed out much if Braz doesn’t work out. It’s not like Sean B. is figuring into TB’s plans at the moment. We have sufficient fodder to take his place if he fails: Etherton, Sweeney, Baugh, and Stauffer.
April 11, 2006 at 3:23 pm
Hensley gets 4-up-3-down to keep it at 6-3 after 7 full …
April 11, 2006 at 3:24 pm
Yeah I think Kenny Baugh needs to get a fair shot at a job, I think he can be a #4 or 5 type.
April 11, 2006 at 3:26 pm
Anyone know the extent of Baugh’s injury? I think he’s on the DL in Portland.
April 11, 2006 at 3:30 pm
That was a nice AB by Barfield.
April 11, 2006 at 3:31 pm
bruce.. actually a nice PA. (plate appearance) because he walked.
April 11, 2006 at 3:31 pm
Also, do we need to put an APB out for Geoff Blum? I don’t necessarily want to see him play all that much, but what has he done to PO Bochy. Bellhorn again off the bench before the WS Hero (TM).
April 11, 2006 at 3:35 pm
Blum’s gotta take care of the kids.
April 11, 2006 at 3:37 pm
They obviously took my “black hole” comment seriously
April 11, 2006 at 3:40 pm
c’mon blow ‘em out.
April 11, 2006 at 3:43 pm
I think Scott Linebrink should come in after Herges.. just for irony’s sake.
April 11, 2006 at 3:45 pm
yea Rob Bowen!
April 11, 2006 at 3:45 pm
Who are these guys and what have they done with the Padres?
April 11, 2006 at 3:46 pm
I was just going to say why Bowen and not Mirabelli. That’s why!
April 11, 2006 at 3:48 pm
Nice flex of his OBP muscle by Giles …
April 11, 2006 at 3:48 pm
Is it Chan Ho Park or B. Sweeney’s turn to pitch?
April 11, 2006 at 3:49 pm
BTW, LM, congrats on the standing so far.
April 11, 2006 at 3:51 pm
Cassidy in to pitch …
Didi … who be you in DS#2?
April 11, 2006 at 3:51 pm
I had the same thought about Bowen, Didi, but if the umpire hadn’t stepped in he would have never had a chance for that RBI single. There were two uncalled strikes in that at-bat.
April 11, 2006 at 3:56 pm
Nice IP by Cassidy … 2 Ks!
April 11, 2006 at 3:56 pm
Cassidy just strike out the side?
April 11, 2006 at 3:58 pm
gameday froze.
April 11, 2006 at 4:02 pm
cbs.sportsline.com works ok when gameday does that…
April 11, 2006 at 4:05 pm
I’m at cbssportsline.com also … Yahoo froze in ~3rd inning ???
April 11, 2006 at 4:10 pm
Tom: thanks for clearing that up. I just get the gameday stuff. My thinking stays then. Since Mirabelli needs to get his AB in Mike’s days off, why not give him an AB while the Padres are ahead in the game?
LM: Old Man in DS#2.
April 11, 2006 at 4:15 pm
Did Khalil Greene smile today? I might have saw a hint of one.
April 11, 2006 at 4:15 pm
Over and out. Did I read that right? Khalil struck out swinging twice.
April 11, 2006 at 4:20 pm
yea but he also had two big big flies
April 11, 2006 at 4:20 pm
Nice close-out by Cassidy … his final line = 2 IP, 36 pitches, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 3 K’s … tasty!
Didi … how Old Man?
Yes, KG now has 7 K’s and 0 BB’s in 24 ABs … quite the slugger, I s’pose …
April 11, 2006 at 4:21 pm
Dogs put up 3-spot in top of 1st vs Bucs …
April 11, 2006 at 4:28 pm
LM: my team, Old Man Rivers.
April 11, 2006 at 4:55 pm
Didi … ya, got that … I’m just askin’ how “Old Man”?
April 11, 2006 at 5:32 pm
AP story of game says …
Roberts made a running catch of Cabrera’s fly near the 434-foot sign in center.
… hmm, that’s nice!
April 12, 2006 at 5:17 am
According to the U-T and padres.com, Williams threw two knuckleballs yesterday — one produced a strikeout and the other resulted in a weak foul.
