[I'm trying something a little different today. Chat about tonight's game here. And we also have a playoff roster thread going for folks who are more interested in looking forward.]
Padres finish up with three against the Dodgers. If the Friars can win two of those games, they’ll end up with a winning record. That would be nice, but what would be even better is to see Williams pitch a good game, like Brian Lawrence did Thursday night against the Giants.
I’m sitting this one out. I go to maybe 5-10 movies a year, but Friday is opening night for Serenity and I’ve been waiting the better part of two years for this one. Not quite as long as I waited for the Padres to return to the playoffs, but you get the idea.
Will Carroll’s notes on Peavy today …
There’s no need for Jake Peavy to make his scheduled Saturday start, given the clinch. Instead, he’ll get his work in down in the pen while someone else makes the start. Peavy’s reported no trouble with his problematic shoulder since missing a start. He’s shown all his pitches, with good velocity and command, and hasn’t shown any sign of a ‘quick fade’ that usually accompanies someone pitching through a shoulder injury. The skipped start will keep him under the fifty-inning increase that scares many people, including me, but numbers are more strict than injuries. Peavy’s injury history, age, and workload make me worry more than I want to about the Mobile native.
Off Topic (OT) question … I was reading an AP article yesterday which was making me mad and it made me go into nit-pic mode and I noticed it refered to “pennant races” and I realized that there’s no such thing anymore, right?
The “pennant” is what you win when you win the AL or the NL … which used to be decided by the regular season … and so the end of the regular season used be properly described as a “pennant race” … but now that the “pennant”s are decided by playoffs, there’s really no such thing as a “pennant race” … imho.
Eh, just a nit …
Has Will Carroll ever written anything to the effect that he’s not concerned at all about a young pitcher’s workload? Seems like every quote I see from the guy he sounds like the Chicken Little of arm injuries.
I’m certainly no expert on injuries but the way Peavy whips his arm back after a pitch worries me a lot more than his workload. In any case, he seems fine for the post season. I think his injuries and illnesses this year gave him enough time off that he still has something in the tank.
