IGD: Padres vs Astros (24 Aug 2005)
Wed, Aug 24, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Chan Ho Park (10-6, 6.07 ERA) vs Ezequiel Astacio (2-6, 6.21 ERA)
preview: Padres.com
After Tuesday night’s epic matchup, Wednesday promises to be a bit of a letdown. Still, the Padres have put themselves in position to win a series against a good team. And the rest of the division continues to play with an alarming amount of apathy.
I’m still too pumped from the Jake Peavy - Roger Clemens battle to really analyze Park vs Astacio. Somehow it just doesn’t seem very interesting to me.
So, what else is going on?
Other Stuff
- Eaton slated to start on Friday (Padres.com). Here’s hoping Eaton is back to or near full strength. One of Chan Ho Park, Brian Lawrence and Woody Williams looks to head to the bullpen, with rookie Clay Hensley most likely going back to Portland, at least until rosters expand next week.
- Padres could look to minors for closer (NC Times). John Maffei notes some possible internal candidates to replace Trevor Hoffman as closer if Hoffman doesn’t return to the Padres in 2006.
Well, I guess not a lot else is going on. I’ll be out at the game again tonight so talk it up, y’all!

Its a pity that Hensley has to make that trip up and back. Why not just leave status quo until the rosters expand and then bring back Eaton. He still doesnt look fully recovered the way he has been getting hit by the minor leaguers.

I think that Leo Rosales is the only viable candidate to close at the major league level although Niel Jamison might have potential.
The problem is that the Padres already have not one but two in house options to replace Trevior.
Linebrink or Aki
Either one could do the job, abiet not as well as Hoffman, but then who could?

ey check out the “DITTO GEAR” ad to the right. It says, “Also comes on standard Gray T-****.”

I think the best solution after Trevor leaves is to quit using a “closer.”

An OT question … Park is from South Korea … in South Korea, do they say his name “Chan Ho Park” or “Park Chan Ho”?
I suspect his name is “correctly” said Park Chan Ho … and if so, why is that so hard for us to do?
I sure wouldn’t want to go to South Korea and have them say my name backwards …

Mildly interesting stats:
Padres v. Clemens: .185/.214/.407 (621 OPS)
That’s an OPS about equal to that of Cesar Izturis (LAN).
Astros v. Peavy: .125/.176/.188 (364 OPS)
That’s an OPS closer to that of Charles Thomas (OAK).

Park is his surname, though. Isn’t it?
August 24, 2005 at 3:30 pm
Looked it up (Googled ‘South Korea surname’). In South Korea, the surname is followed by the given name.

From Wikipedia:
“In Korean, the given name follows the family name.
When using European languages, some Koreans keep the original order, while others reverse their names to match the Western naming pattern of family name following the given name.”

What did we do before the Internet? Seriously.

btw, his last name is really something between “bahk,” “pahk,” and “pak.” The vowel is like the spanish “a” and the first consonant is between a “b” and “p.” We don’t know where the “r” came from–there is no “r” in Korean.

Nice baserunning by Roberts to take third on Randa’s groundout.
August 24, 2005 at 7:58 pm
Giles: RBI triple, his 7th, way to use that park, baby.
August 24, 2005 at 8:47 pm
Randa is getting it done tonight.

Three outs (Hoffman). 32 of 34 saves this year for Hoffman.

Hoffman is now in second place on the saves list by himself.

what happen to park in the 6th?
August 24, 2005 at 10:30 pm
they pinch-hit for him.
August 24, 2005 at 10:36 pm
Was he pitching that badly? only about 80 pitches.
August 24, 2005 at 11:47 pm
No, I think they just figured they wanted get out ahead with him. He has not fared in the sixth lately. And I think they were trying to blow that inning opening with Sweeney. I think that’s who pinch-hit for him.
