In-Game Discussion: Padres vs Cubs (3 Jun 2005)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Adam Eaton (7-1, 3.58 ERA) vs Sergio Mitre (0-0, 5.84 ERA)

It’d be nice to see the Pads jump out to an early lead so we don’t have to hear the so-called home crowd chant “Klesko sucks” again. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cubs fans, I just prefer the ones who are still in Chicago.

                             AB BA OBP SLG
Eaton vs current Cubs 146 .301 .356 .555
Mitre vs everyone (career) 306 .327 .386 .510

Pretty much everyone has had success against Eaton, so I won’t bother going into specifics. Where will Miguel Ojeda play tonight, and what will be the excuse for starting him over Xavier Nady? Only the shadow knows.

My attitude stinks. Is it the weekend yet?

I’ll be at the game tonight, so I can’t chat, but I did want to pass this along:

Thanks to Ed for the heads-up. Go Pads!

Adam worked himself out of a little bit of a jam in the top of the first.

And the Cubs start the second with a single and stolen base (off Eaton, not Hernandez).

Eaton can show me something by getting his act together and stopping the losing streak. So far, it ain’t looking too good…

I’m just not feeling at all good about the Pads right now. We just look really flat. It’s like we lost our confidence. Everything that was going right the past few weeks, seems to have left us.

Base hit, Giles, but Nevin quickly goes to 0-2.
Giles to second, time for Nevin to earn his paycheck.

looks like Nevin came through that time, eh?

He had an excellent AB the time before where he worked an 0-2 count to 3-2 before flying out.

Maybe Ramirez should play a little further from the bag. ha

Sorry, Richard. I’m pending because I have 45 employees, three kids, a wife, and an obscene mortgage. But I SWEAR to start next week!
Am I the only person here that would prefer Eaton in rightfield to Ojeda, on those days that Bochy loses his mind?!?
Now that they’ve chased Mitre, let’s pile it on!

So to update: 45 employees, three kids, a wife, and an obscene mortgage and a four-run cushion. ;)

  30. Posted June 3, 2005 at 8:59 pm | Permalink

Eaton has personally scored as many runs as he has allowed.

“Where do employ these people?,” asks Kevin.
Lance employ people at Richardson Steel, Inc. Build many strong building. Work many hour to support family. Grunt.
Lance surname Richardson. That explain things.
Sorry, Kevin, I’m sure it was a typo.
Derek Lee’s 0 fer 4. Probably for the first time this year.

After reading my own posts, I’ve concluded that I can really come across as a jackass. Or maybe I AM a jackass.
I’ve been a diehard Pad fan for the team’s entire history (sort of…I was born in January of ‘69), though, and that counts for something, right?

I’m leaving the office and heading home. I’m thinking we need to plan a game-watching gathering soon. I will submit a request to my ever-so-reasonable wife, and perhaps we’ll soon be talking about a gathering at the Lance household. Who’s willing to come to Dictionary Hill (atop Spring Valley) for beers, pizza, and mayhem?
    Gimme some e-mail feedback.

my attitude is MUCH better now..

back on the winning track and its nice to see Aki have a good outing..

burroughs stung the ball pretty well also(except the ground out) but Khalil seems to be struggling.

  43. Posted June 3, 2005 at 9:47 pm | Permalink

I find that it’s hard to complain about run production when they have at least one run per two hits. They were more efficient than that tonight, so I’m pleased.

  44. Posted June 4, 2005 at 12:01 am | Permalink

Just got back from the game. After the second inning, Eaton looked fantastic. Aki was great, and his at-bat was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen on a baseball field. Good effort all the way around, and a good (and needed) win at home.

On another note, and once again the folks who read the comments get the news first, I’ll be appearing on Channel 4’s “Outta Left Field” before Wednesday night’s game against the Indians. I’ve never done TV before, so it should be fun. More details in subsequent posts.

    Anyway, great game tonight. Later…

That’s cool, Geoff. I hate that show, but I’ll be tuned in. If you get a chance, poke the host in the eyes.

I was at the game as well (big deal for me, because I live in SF). This evens my Petco record to 1-1. I was cringing on the call to bring in Aki. He’s been having control problems, brings him in with the bases loaded. On his warm-ups he looked to have trouble finding the strike zone. I was seething with Bochy’s decision. Then, boom, ahead O-2 and later converts the K. That is why I watch and others manage/play.

As Geoff mentioned, I loved Aki’s AB. As my girlfriend said, “That was cute.”

Nice to get a win and briefly cool down Lee.

Thanks, Richard. As for poking anyone in the eyes, only if we do a Three Stooges tribute. ;-)
