In-Game Discussion: Padres @ Mariners (21 May 2005)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Brian Lawrence (2-4, 5.24 ERA) vs Gil Meche (3-2, 5.25 ERA)
previews: ESPN | CBS | SI | Padres.com

Jake Peavy dominated as usual Friday night, holding the Mariners to three singles over seven innings in the Pads’ 6-1 victory at Safeco. Friars have won eight in a row and 17 of 20. Tonight Brian Lawrence tries to conquer his road demons. In four starts away from Petco this year, opponents are hitting him to the tune of .382/.449/.632. He’ll face right-hander Gil Meche, whose season stats look eerily similar to those of Lawrence. The Padres once again will be without the services of second baseman Mark Loretta, whose status remains uncertain for now.

                              AB BA OBP SLG
Lawrence vs current Mariners 91 .264 .302 .396

Franklin vs current Padres 31 .290 .371 .355

Not a lot of at-bats against Lawrence. Only Adrian Beltre (.171/.216/.314 in 35 AB) and Dave Hansen (.385/.429/.385 in 13 AB) have faced him more than 10 times. Richie Sexson and Scott Spiezio have the lone jacks.

I can’t think of anything to say about Meche. Okay, how about this: In 93 career starts, opponents are just 16 for 32 in stolen base attempts against him. So if Dave Roberts (.328 OBP) can reach base, we’ll have to keep an eye on that. Which reminds me, FREE XAVIER NADY!

Here are the May stats of some guys who play the same positions as Nady:

AB BA OBP SLG XB/H ISO
Sean Burroughs 60 .217 .288 .217 .000 .000
Phil Nevin 66 .288 .310 .348 .105 .060
Dave Roberts 61 .213 .315 .361 .385 .148

How is Roberts the power option out of that group? Anyway, the point is, the Padres have played 18 games this month and Nady has just 17 at-bats. That ain’t right.

  1. gonna have to comeback against another good bullpen.

  2. Hernandez is now hitting .303. His season projections are 19 homers, 79 RBIs, .338 on-base and .462 slugging. Hell of a player.

  3. Beltre crushed that one. That hurts.

  4. Looks like I better get going…not only are we getting killed now, but its midnight here. Have a good one all…thanks for letting me join.

  5. Wow these announcers are such homers compared to the geriatrics. All this screaming is going to give me a heart attack.

  6. Anything traveling that fast ought to have a stewardess on it.

  7. 3 run deficit is a tall order. I agree with Eric. We blew our chances early.

  8. Maybe Lawrence is our stopper

  9. We can do it!

  10. Botched play by the ball girl.

  11. We need another clutch hit from Sweeney after that double from Roberts to get this game to a 2 run margin.

  12. That was a nice gift from Seattle. That evens out the gift run from Blum in the first. Now the tying run can come up in the form of Ryan Klesko.

  13. well, the 7th inning started so I guess that means we’re allowed to start scoring runs.

  14. Sexton pulled a Buckner.

  15. Richie Ritchie Rickie Richy Ricky Sexson Sexton Sexon must lead the league in mispellings.

  16. Hopefully Villone will continue his charitable ways. 5 pitch walk to Ryno. Up comes Giles.

  17. Hot has Giles has been, he hasn’t hit many homers.

  18. “aw, c’mon that was way off the plate” Giles says

  19. That’s twice he has let strike three go by on the outside corner. That one was closer than the last. Two more left on. Ichiro’s catch is looming larger. But at least a two run bomb could tie it now.

  20. Why is Lawrence still in there?

  21. wow. Linebrink just BLEW ichiro away with 3 fastballs.

  22. Linebrink makes hitters look AAA

  23. Good stint by Linebrink to prevent that run from scoring. 6 outs left for the Padres, with Nevin, Ramon, and Burroughs due up.

  24. I like how Bochy is using his top guys trailing by 2 runs. It’s like he’s anticipating a comeback.

  25. Completely Off Topic: Who decided to give Larry Bowa a job on Baseball Tonight?

  26. That was a weak inning by the Pads.

  27. Bowa was probably the best of all the fired managers who actually wanted the job.

  28. Bowa really just doesn’t look right in a suit does he? But I am more concerned that every new “analyst” they bring has some tie to the Philles: Brantley, Kruk, Bowa. They look like they should be hosting a show in Vegas on sports betting.

  29. Top of the ninth coming up: Greene, Blum and Roberts will try to get a rally going.

  30. Our relievers are impressive.

  31. Yeah, it looks like Brantley and Kruk were stuffed into their suits about 10 minutes before the show. And they said, Aw do we have to wear them?

  32. Guardado has given up three homers so far this year.

  33. Khalil should be embarassed to K on 88mph heat.

  34. Blum flies to warning track. Two out. Down to Dave Roberts.

  35. And that’s the ballgame. Padres never really got into after Lawrence gave up the back to back jacks. 7 LOB, but only two of those in scoring position.

  36. Streak had to end sometime. I think we will all take a win 6, lose 1 approach to things. Let’s come back tomorrow and take the series.

  37. You gotta like the chances against Sele tomorrow, but then again the matchup tonight looked good on paper too.

  38. Hey Lynch Mob…about the comment yesterday…you don’t trade somebody young for somebody older…I would rather keep a 26 year old Nady than trade him for a 32 year old veteran picther…who do you think will replace Giles next year if he doesn’t get resigned… look how the Padres got screwed on the Jason Bay/Oliver Perez for Brian Giles trade…Nothing is wrong with our pitching besides the fact that we do not have a true left handed starter…with “the future being now”, I think what they should concern about is scoring more runs

  39. Hey SD Padres Fan … I tried to send you email (@ alf123@yahoo.com) … but it bounced. I’m interested “discuss” off line … send me an email (imhl58@hotmail.com).
