first pitch: 1:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Adam Eaton (7-1, 3.49 ERA) vs Jason Schmidt (3-1, 4.79 ERA)
previews: ESPN | CBS | SI | Padres.com
Just got in from Vegas; thanks to Jay for posting the key pitcher-batter matchups in yesterday’s comments. Here they are:
Good: (AB/BA/OBP/SLG/OPS) Sweeney: 20/.350/.458/.750/1.208 Hernandez: 15/.400/.526/.867/1.393 Jackson: 13/.308/.438/.615/1.053 Blum: 13/.231/.286/.538/.824
Ugly: Nevin: 20/.200/.261/.250/.511 Klesko: 41/.171/.286/.317/.603 Giles: 27/.074/.324/.222/.547
Good: Bonds (who cares, but his OPS is 1.227) Alou 16/.375/.412/.813/1.224 Tucker 8/.500/.500/.625/1.125 Durham 16/.250/.400/.688/1.088 Alfonzo 20/.300/.391/.600/.991 Snow 21/.286/.348/.524/.872
Ugly: Vizquel OPS with 6 AB .250; Marquis Grissom (out) has an OPS .274 in 28 AB's
Jay also had this commentary to offer, and I think it’s spot on: “I know it is asking for way, way too much, but today looks like a day to see Nady, Sweeney in there (I say give Nady a go if your big guns are so bad against Schmidt).”
The good news is, Sweeney and Jackson in are in today’s lineup. The bad news? Giles and Klesko play, Nady sits.
X Factor
Xavier Nady started in left field Saturday. Batting seventh, he singled in four at-bats. He also drove in the tying run in the seventh on what should have been an infield hit; unfortunately first base umpire C.B. Bucknor missed the call at first, so it was just an RBI ground out. Nady had one other nice at-bat; in the fourth, after falling behind 0-2, he worked the count full before flying to the warning track in left.
Pads have already clinched their second straight series win on the road against a division rival and a winning record on the road trip. Today they go for the sweep against one of the tougher right-handers in baseball.

Sweeney’s in. Nady’s not.
Klesko should be on first. Can’t be swinging at pitches in the dirt.
What was the count?
Full count. Geez, now Vizquel saves a run. Giles gets the infield single but Blum holds at third.
Yeah, I don’t get the number of hit-and-runs that Bochy calls.
Schmidt is struggling with location. This would be a good time to do some damage.
But if Klesko was on first, I guess Vizquel would have gotten him on the force at second.
Four-pitch walk to Sweeney. Ramon has to take a pitch. He does, and it’s a high strike.
I’m not sure he would’ve gotten Klesko at second. That ball was practically into center field. Would’ve been real close.
Schmidt gets a gift call on a low 1-1 pitch.
Routine grounder to second should get them out of the inning but Durham kicks it. 1-0 Pads.
We’ll take it.
Durham does not move well to his right at all.
Danica Patrick finishes fourth.
Dammit, can someone tell Khalil not to swing at the first pitch with the bases loaded when the opposing pitcher can’t locate?
And can they tell Roberts not to try to steal third base with Giles up while they’re at it?
Geoff or anyone else,
Have you read the Peavy piece in ESPN Magazine?
Eaton serves up a leadoff homer to Jason Ellison but it’s just foul. Then he serves up another that stays fair.
Kevin, I haven’t read the Peavy piece. Do you happen to have the URL handy?
it’s on the front of the site
Cool, I’ll check it out. Ball is carrying well today.
The most fascinating thing in there, at least the thing that I did not know, was that he fired Scott Boras when Boras told him to hold out last winter.
Eaton had a six-pitch at-bat after Greene and Jackson swung at first pitches. Who are the professional hitters here?
Nice shot by Blum, off the wall in right. Ryno tries to lay down a bunt?
That was a really good AB by Giles.
Can’t find the ESPN article on Peavy but here’s a pretty cool little read:
http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=mlb/news/aan3916346.htm
Giles singles home Blum. Nice at-bat.
Great at-bat by Giles. He worked him until he got his pitch. He’s on pace for about 130 walks.
Yep, he worked the count and then got a good pass on a pretty tough pitch.
I’ve got Schmidt at 56 pitches through 2.1 IP?
You have to have ESPN Insider to get the Peavy article.
57, according to ESPN
Damn, I thought Sweeney had that one. Just missed it.
Sweeney put a heck of a swing on that ball.
Has anyone seen Giles’ stats this month? .364/.462/.682. He has 17 BB to 6 K going into today.
These Giants announcers are people who need to be phased out, as George Carlin would say.
Giles has been great. Great strike zone judgement. With Bonds out of the game, not sure how many others would be better.
Dogs score 3 in top of 1st @ Arizona …
Giles’ numbers including today (for May): .378/.477/.689
Schmidt is at 64 pitches through three. Gotta keep the pressure on him, get into their bullpen.
I’d like to see Arizona beat up on the Dodgers. I really think LA is the bigger threat (and by a lot).
Schmidt: 64 pitches through 3 innings.
Pitching stats after top of 3rd …
Pitches-strikes – A Eaton 29-23; J Schmidt 64-36.
Ground balls-fly balls – A Eaton 2-4; J Schmidt 4-5.
Batters faced – A Eaton 7; J Schmidt 15.
Richard – I agree that Dodgers are bigger threat than D-backs … with Werth and Gagne back for Dodgers, they are getting deeper at a time when that really matters …
Eaton: 32 strikes, 9 balls. Keep dealing.
The Dodgers concern me. I don’t think Arizona’s pitching can hold up over the long haul.
Padres have the second best odds of making the playoffs. St. Louis is #1.
NL West Champions (BP Postseason Odds):
Padres 65.38405
Dodgers 16.49115
Diamondbacks 10.33341
Giants 7.61943
Rockies .17195
I believe the Rockies’ chances are somewhat less than that.
More on what you pointed out, Richard. Giles is second in the majors in BB/K ratio with 1.70. David Eckstein is first. Loretta is sixth. In walks per plate appearance, Giles is fifth. Klesko is 10th.
And that is why you don’t stop running! Durham for MVP!
Durham clanked another one. They’re booing him. Greene hits a popup into short right and Durham just plain drops it. Khalil on second.
I don’t know what Ray Durham is thinking about, but it sure ain’t baseball. We’ll take it, though.
Good call on Khalil’s running, Richard. Grant is giving him props right now.
Bat AB by DJ. First pitch swinging again. Falls behind 0-2, then hits a routine grounder to short, Khalil stays at second.
Farm Report: McAnulty with his 6th HR … Tagg with 3 hits while playing 1B … last night for AA Mobile … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&did=milb&t=g_box&gid=2005_05_28_jaxaax_mobaax_1
Man, Roberts creamed that one. Schmidt is fooling no-one.
Dave Roberts has been excellent this year.
Roberts, double. Who would have thought that a slugging pct. between 460 and 470 would be his strength so far.
Schmidt is over 80 pitches.
Great AB from Blum. Works the 2-out walk. Schmidt is up to 86 pitches.
And Klesko hacks at the first pitch in the dirt.
Klesko can’t do anything against Schmidt.
Hey, Richard, do you want to trade links on our sites?
Pitching stats after top of 4th (3-1 Padres) …
Pitches-strikes – A Eaton 42-33; J Schmidt 88-52.
Ground balls-fly balls – A Eaton 3-4; J Schmidt 5-6.
Batters faced – A Eaton 10; J Schmidt 21.
Roberts this year: .288/.361/.470
75th Percentile PECOTA: .291/.362/.376
The BA and OBP weren’t so unlikely, but even his 90th Percentile PECOTA for Slugging is only .404.
He’s only stealing at a 62% rate, though. It’d be 69% if it weren’t for getting called out when he was safe the other day.
Kev, I don’t have your site in my links? I thought I did. I’d gladly do the swap.
A loud single and a sure double lands three feet foul.
I keep reading here about Roberts hitting the ball well, and his SLG reflects it … but I’ve only seen a few of his ABs on TV and he’s looked weak to me … wildish swings … no authority on the ball when he does make contact … I know “small sample size” … but I wonder which “small sample size” is right?
Roberts has an ugly swing, but it seems to be effective.
That was Weisbarth the other day? haha
Dave Roberts has a VORP of 9.1. That’s good for 11th in the Majors (among Centerfielders). And he missed a chunk of time in April.
Vasgersian didn’t seem to understand there wasn’t a force at second.
OK, Rich, you’re up.
Ryno is 6th among Major League Leftfielders in VORP with a 14.6. I’m browsing the BP stats page, obviously.
What the hell was Adam doing on that throw to home?
It’s really only the fourth inning?
I believe he was screening Ramon.
Last year, Payton only managed a 9.5 VORP over the course of the season.
He hits Matheny with the bases loaded? Mike freakin’ Matheny? WTF!
How do you walk in the tying run after giving an intentional pass to the guy before him?
game-tying HBP, jeez.
Not walk, but HBP rather.
Interesting comparison of last year’s VORP for Payton with this year’s for Roberts.
Eaton survives the inning, despite himself.
D-backs get a pair in bottom of 2nd … now trail 4-2 …
Thru 4 full (3-3 tie) …
Pitches-strikes – A Eaton 42-33; J Schmidt 88-52.
Ground balls-fly balls – A Eaton 3-4; J Schmidt 5-6.
Batters faced – A Eaton 10; J Schmidt 21.
Payton was really bad and Roberts is surprisingly good. Not the biggest realization, but I was surprised how much worse Payton was than I recalled and how much better Roberts is than I thought.
Farm Report: Fernando Jr. now hitting .348 … hiths 4th HR yesterday … Kottaras now hitting .295 … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&did=milb&t=g_box&gid=2005_05_28_lesafx_bakafx_1
Thanks for the updates, LM. This morning’s U-T says Bozied is set to rejoin Portland today.
Base hit Giles. Another solid AB.
Bochy must be thinking, hey, I ignored the percentages on Giles, and I’m right. But I hope he was awake for Klesko’s at-bats.
.425 OBP on the season for Giles.
Giles steals another base? Wow.
Now Giles thinks he is Tim Raines.
Sweeney is making great contact today.
Sweeney puts another one to the warning track. Schmidt is now at 100 pitches.
Look at Giles go. I take back everything I said about that trade.
.425 is good for 8th in the Majors. Ramon comes through!
And Ramon hacks at the first pitch. It was a good cut, but was he watching what Giles and Sweeney did?
Base hit, nevermind.
Brower is throwing in the bullpen with one out in the fifth for the Giants. This is what we want.
WARP1 for Brian this season: 3.1
WARP1 for Bay/Perez this season: 2.3
Hermey puts a charge in one! 6 to 3, San Diego!
Sweet! Two-run jack Greenie. Time to get Schmidt out of there, I’d say.
Hernandez is having a nice season. Bochy is right, the more you see him, the more you like him.
What’s Greene slugging, Richard?
Great game so far. Re: Hernandez, I think we are going to end up overpaying him through 4 years precisely because everyone, fans and players alike, like him more and more.
Same comp by WARP3: 5.0 to 3.8 (advantage Padres)
Back of the envelope calculation: .469
He may be the kind of guy you have to overpay, because of his effect on a pitching staff and Bochy is partial to catchers with intangibles.
DJ steals second, then slides off the bag and is tagged out to end the inning. Irritating, but we’ll take the 6-3 lead without complaint.
Hermey: .265/.333/.469
I really don’t like the idea of giving a catcher entering his 30s a 4-year deal. I love what Ramon has done for us, but I just think that has the chance to cripple the team down the line. I hope they can work something out for fewer years.
Damian makes up for coming off the bag!
Holy smokes, that was a brilliant play by DJ.
Eaton has gotten great support again. He is 14th in the majors in run support with 6.52 a game. The next best Padre is Peavy at 43rd.
I asked Jonathan (@ pdxbeavers.com) about Stauffer’s splits … and this morning he sent me this info about his time in Portland …
Guys:
You had asked for these a while back, sorry about the delay.
I see that his ML splits appear to have evened out a bit – here’s what they were in Portland.
This season, in 38 2/3 innings, Stauffer had the following splits:
Vs RH: 16IP — 14H — 4BB — 14K –0HRA — .237BAA — 3.94 ERA
Vs LH: 22 2/3IP — 20H — 4BB — 17K — 1HRA — .238BAA — 1.19 ERA
In 2004, in 81 1/3 IP, 3.54 ERA:
vs RH: 37 2/3IP — 35H — 12BB — 18K — 4HRA — .243 BAA — 40GB — 47FLY
Vs LH: 43 2/3 — 48H — 14BB — 32K — 11HRA — .276 BAA — 58 GB — 34FLY
Let me know if you have any questions – clearly, he was solid, if somewhat average in 2004. At no time last season was he the best pitcher on the Portland staff. He was dominant early in the year in 2005 – clearly the best pitcher on the staff in April and deserved the promotion.
Jonathan
… if you’ve not check’d out pdxbeavers.com, you should!
It didn’t look like Ryno was going to catch that.
We’re over 100 comments. Anyone tired?
Do you overpay him to the tune of Varitek money if it costs you a chance at re-signing Giles because we can’t get Klesko or Nevin off the books. I like Ramon as much as the next guy, but I would hesitate to give him 4/40.
Thanks for the splits, LM.
Dave Roberts is officially my favorite player to watch.
No, I wouldn’t give him Varitek money. I guess I’m not sure what “overpaying” him would be or what he will even ask for.
Ryno made a nice play. Kevin, I’m tired but that’s because I drove home this morning from Vegas and I only got about four hours of sleep last night.
But it’s a good tired, you know?
Ramon is not worth 4 years, $40 million.
Yes, thanks for posting that, LM. And everyone should go check out pdxbeavers.com if they haven’t already. Jonathan does a fantastic job over there; I wish more minor league teams had that kind of coverage.
His best year as a pro, he had a WARP3 of 6.7. I honestly don’t think he’ll approach that again.
Number of times someone said that about Jay Payton: zero.
Geoff, what happens there …
Roberts makes a great play, then leads off the next inning … oh, nevermind.
Who are you talking about, Richard?
I know, isn’t Roberts great to watch? I still can’t help but think he’s playing over his head, but he is fun to watch out there. I hope he keeps it up.
Speaking of Roberts, that’s a terrible called strike three to start the sixth.
WARP1 for Dave Roberts: 1.3
WARP1 for Payton/Vazquez/Pauley: 0.3
“Terrible” doesn’t do it justice, Geoff.
Kevin: PDXBeavers.com has daily coverage of the Portland Beavers, including recaps, stories, interviews, and more. Readers can post comments as well. Good stuff.
Padres are 6th in the NL in DEF_EFF. Giles is 4 for 4! And Klesko goes all the way to third. Wow.
Giles is a monster. Fourth hit today.
Regarding Ramon at 4/$40, what kills me is that it’s the Red Sox overpaying for Varitek that set the bar that high. You know, the Red Sox who like to complain about how much the Yankees spend? Please.
Sweeney is finally rewarded for a good PA. Ramon, put ‘em away!
Farm Report: Here’s a note that will surprise most of (courtesy of the Portland Beaver’s pre-game email) …
For the second straight night, Beavers shortstop Jesse Garcia fell one leg shy of the cycle (that is, a single, double, triple and home run in the same game). Friday night, he was a triple away. Last night, he lacked only a double.
Good call on that, Geoff.
Speaking of Ramon with the bases loaded, the Padres have two players known for small ball postseason plays. Roberts’ steal and Ramon’s bases-loaded bunt vs. the Sox a couple years ago.
That’s amusing, but a 31 y/o should beat up on AAA pitching.
Yeah, the Sox are the Evil Empire to everyone but the Yankees.
Too bad Ramon couldn’t get the hit there. I was hoping he’d be rewarded for taking the first pitch.
PDXBeavers is a great site. Now that Knott and Ben Johnson are swinging the bat better, I will have to visit more often. Once Timmy got promoted and the offense was in a collective slump I tailed off there.
That was a bunt for hit, which isn’t necessarily small ball.
Jesse Garcia’s career WARP3: 0.2
Would you pay Ramon $32mil for four seasons.
What if it’s a 31 year-old AAA pitcher? Who “should” win?
Not complaining, well not too much, but the Pads have left on 9 already today, 7 of them in scoring position.
It’s not big ball, but I see what you’re saying.
Touché, LM.
I don’t think Ramon should be given four years.
If Eaton gets out of this inning, that’s enough from him. He’ll be at 100 pitches.
4/32 for Ramon is more palatable, but I would prefer at most 3/24 with a fourth year option.
He ought to be done, now. That’s a solid effort from Eaton.
I guess the years will be the sticking point, not the money.
I’d rather give him 3/27 than 4/32.
Alderson has previously expressed his disdain for long-term contracts.
Here’s an interesting snip from an email I get which has a focus on roto …
PIT OF Jason Bay has been a great power source, with 11 HR so far, but in the past two weeks he has been in a tailspin, hitting only .153 and dropping his BA from .317 to .279. He began to pull out of his slump the past two nights with a couple of homers and a 3 for 6 performance. The bad news in Bay’s numbers is that he is hitting only .231 against right-handed pitching. And his hit rate of 27% against right-handed pitching matches his full-season hit rate of 28% at AAA Indianapolis in 2003, so this may not be
bad luck.
Pitching stats thru 6 full … 6-3 Padres …
Pitches-strikes – A Eaton 104-70; J Schmidt 106-63; J Brower 26-13.
Ground balls-fly balls – A Eaton 7-7; J Schmidt 5-7; J Brower 2-1.
Batters faced – A Eaton 25; J Schmidt 25; J Brower 8.
He’ll be 32 on Opening Day of the fourth year. Is that age really scary? He could still get it done.
Hermey: 2 for 4
Will we see Nady to PH for Eaton?
Ramon’s peak was age 27.
He will be younger than Giles, Nevin and Klesko are now.
A lot of well-struck balls by the Friars today.
Catcher is the most demanding position. 1B, LF & RF are the three least demanding positions.
Nope, it’s Miguel Ojeda.
That is best year so far. And that is the peak for most players. But his best season may turn out to be this season.
There’s that whole catchers age poorly argument, and if Ramon declines quickly by his fourth year, he could be making 4-6 million more than his production could warrant, and that’s assuming he is worth 8-10/annually to begin with.
Richard, I think I’d be okay with 3/$27 for Ramon. That’s still a tad high, but I’m more concerned about the years than the dollars.
I think it’s too early to get worried about Hernandez’ age … so I think $ will be more of a factor than years … so I still think he’s gone … the Padres’ aren’t going to give him “market value” (ie. he’ll be able to get more $ elsewhere) … and that’s not necessarily bad … it certainly wasn’t bad for the Padres to let David Wells get “market value” elsewhere this year.
Seems like we might lose both Hernandez & Giles to “market value” … of the 2, right now I think Ramon would be the harder to replace …
Which he isn’t.
Catchers are always harder to replace. Of the 8 position players on a field, usually 6 of them are more than capable of playing right field.
Not a great outing by Eaton, but he battled and finished strong. Thinking back to the HBP to Matheny (and to a few other pitches), does it seem like Adam is working the inner half more this year?
Matty’s going on about that annoying Giant fan, again. heh
I agree that those other positions are more demanding, but he will be 1-2 years younger than those other three. If he was a year older, I would probably say no way to a fourth year. But I think he’s right on that border.
Perhaps Bochy is “saving” Nady in case a more important/valuable AB comes along in the 8th or 9th? OK, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt … this time. Free the X-man!
Padres have stolen four of four against Matheny today (Jackson, then slid off the base, though).
Sorry, I meant those other positions are less demanding.
One thing I like about Roberts is that even though he doesn’t have the greatest OBP, he does make guys work. This is a nice at-bat against Eyre.
It’s debatable. Ten pitch AB by Roberts? Nice.
That logo is not the Swinging Padre. It’s the Swinging Friar. Idiot Giants announcers.
.360 is a pretty good OBP.
This may be a 200 comment discussion. And with fluff comments like this, I’m sure of it.
Let’s see if Rudy can K the side again.
Considering Roberts OBP coming into the season, I thought I would be “happy” with .350 and 50 steals. He’s not stealing a bunch of bases, but that slugging is better than the steals.
I would have been happy with .340. Damn, there’s a hit.
You da fluff, Richard
Giants announcers just compared the Padres bullpen to the Nasty Boys of the 1990 Reds. Not sure if they were talking about three specific relievers for the Padres. But then again, I’ve been calling them idiots all day. But their point was that after the sixth inning, it’s over.
You’re right, .360 OBP is solid. I was thinking more of his career OBP coming into the season (.335). Roberts has been a *much* tougher out than I’d expected.
Not a good start to the bottom half of the 7th.
Uh-oh. I’m thinking of missed opportunities earlier in the game now.
What do you expect from the pen today … Seanez + Linebrink + Hoffy?
… or Seanez + Hammonds + Hoffy?
Damn.
Death by paper cuts.
Get Seanez out.
I’m thinking maybe, Seanez, Hammond, Linebrink, Hoffy.
Here comes Hammond.
Giants have now pulled within one, those 10 LOB are coming back to bite us in the behind. In comes Hammond.
Giants have now pulled within one, those 10 LOB are coming back to bite us in the behind. In comes Hammond.
Giants’ announcers yesterday refered to Linebrink as “a closer waiting to happen” … hmmm, is he Hoffy’s heir-apparent? Sounds right to me. At the start of the year, I thought it’d be Brad Baker (who currently has 14 saves for AAA Portland, but poor ERA, etc) … Linebrink seems to have the credentials …
Is Craig Lefferts available?
I’ve never seen anyone run back to home plate.
Nice that we still have Nady available to PH
And Nevin, for that matter …
Didn’t Nevin hit a pinch-hit HR against the Giants earlier this year?
Hammond just broke 80. Wow.
Damian!
That was some pitching. And another nice play by DJ.
I’m happy to see Feliz PH for Snow …
April 26, he had the PH HR. We lost that one, though.
Tie game.
The umpire broke up that meeting quickly. Hey, give us a break.
Why a first-pitch strike to Alou? Why!
Alou does like to swing at that first pitch.
Padres need to take the lead right back.
Starting all over again, with the middle of the order coming up. I agree Richard, there is no better time than now to get the lead right back. This is another one of those games that we shouldn’t let slip away.
If it makes anyone feel better, our PH options at this point are Nady and Nevin from the right side, and Fick from the left. The Giants are down to Deivi Cruz, Dallimore, and Torrealba.
We also have the better bullpen, but that hasn’t really helped today.
What are Klesko’s numbers vs. this guy?
2-for-4, double and homer
Giles is .455/.538/.818 in 11 AB. He’s on deck.
That ball was off the plate. Plate umpire is having a bad day. He had a bad day at 1B yesterday.
Momentum is shifting. Not the way to end the trip.
Apparently Boch is going to let Hammond continue. One out with Tucker up.
Lefties are now 1-for-22 against Hammond this year.
This description of bottom of 8th makes Hammond look tough …
- E. Alfonzo flied out to deep left
- M. Tucker grounded out to second
- M. Matheny grounded out to shortstop
“good bullpen” > momentum
Attaboy, Ramon. Let’s get something started.
Man, I thought Khalil hit that one out, too. Runners at second and third with one out.
Any chance we PH for DJ … then move Blum to 2B and Nady @ 3B in bottom of 9th?
Nope. DJ stays in and singles home two. Sweet!
Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about.
Heh, I would’ve sent Nady up there. What do I know.
Who’s on-deck?
LM: Fick is batting for Hammond.
And I assume Hoffy is up in the pen?
Bochy just told Nady to hit the showers.
Is the camera focusing on Trevor or the girl in the orange Giants shirt?
Trevor is 5-for-5 in save opportunities this year on 0 days rest. Base hit Fick, Jackson scores. Crowd is booing again.
If we score another run, it won’t be a save situation, then some reliever will come in and make it a save situation.
I like Fick!
If that were really the goal, I vote Reyes.
That’s the the goal, but the fear.
Alou is making another pitching change. That bullpen has been worked hard this series. And they paid way too much for LaTroy Hawkins. What did they get for Felix Rodriguez last year: Ricky Ledee?
Not the goal, I meant. I wearing down.
Torrealba is in the game for SF. Their only PH are Deivi Cruz and Dallimore. Aki is warming up just in case we score another run.
Turns out Ricky Ledee is good … but the Giants didn’t hang on to him … and now he’s having a VERY solid year for the Dodgers … sigh.
Those 240 comment games will do that to you.
Seven pitches so far to Roberts. He is such a pest!
Giants guys just said it seems like every Padres hitter has gone to a 3-2 count. Untrue, but a nice compliment.
This is the second time Bucknor has called time while a pitcher is releasing the ball.
yeah, I think I may have Carlos Zambrano’s syndrome.
Fick gets picked off first base. Nitpicky, but we need to be a little smarter on the basepaths.
Roberts walks. Nice AB.
Fick looked like he was running under water.
That’s not a nitpick, Geoff, that’s thinking about what it’s going to take to win enough games to make the post-season … and to win games if the Padres get there … LOTs of little things go into winning in the post-season!
I’ve got to get ready for work. Maybe someone else can do the Hoffman thing.
Dave Roberts:
Inning 1 – 6 pitches
Inning 2 – 7 pitches
Inning 4 – 4 pitches
Inning 5 – 1 pitch (Jackson thrown out stealing)
Inning 6 – 4 pitches (BS K looking)
Inning 7 – 10 pitches
Inning 9 – 9 pitches
Dogs add an insurance run in top of 9th … now up 6-2 … Ricky Ledee with a PH single in the rally …
Fick got picked off on what was a border line balk (border line because they didn’t call it).
How often does a guy see 41 pitches in a game?
Is it fair to think that, given the piano on his back, Fick was leaning in an effort to avoid/prevent GIDP?
He was running on the play. It was a Hit & Run (there’s no way it was a steal).
Strike three! (Death)
Nice one Hoffy
So Geoff’s comment about “smarter on the basepaths” needs to be directed to Bochy? Ug …
Double for Ellison.
I don’t see anything wrong with the hit & run. I just think the pitcher balked.
Flyball to RF. (Taxes)
I wasn’t thinking specifically of the Fick pickoff. Also Roberts’ CS last night, and DJ sliding past the bag earlier today.
One strike away.
Strike three! (Hoffman)
BALLGAME!
Roberts was safe last night, but DJ’s coming off the bag was boneheaded. I gotta run. I’m already late for a barbecue. It was fun. Go Padres!
Sweep! Very nice. What a great road trip. As always, thanks for hanging out and chatting. Tomorrow night at Petco against the Brewers.
Man, this is fun.
Anyone know the pitching matchups for the Brewers/Pads series?
So here’s a stupid thought: Hammond intentionally let the sixth Giant run score after he was brought in, because he knows the Padres have been insanely clutch and he wants to vulture the win for himself.
Stupid because I’m sure I don’t believe that, but I couldn’t help think it as I was watching.
Also, C.B. Bucknor doesn’t appear to be very good at his job.
270-some comments. Holy Luis Tiant!
Farm Report … Sean Thompson continues to struggle at AA Mobile … now 0-3, 5.21 ERA.
Hmmm, I just checked the Portland box scores … they played a double-header … and a commenter @ pdxbeavers.com mentioned that that radio guys had said he might play in 2nd game … but that didn’t happen … rats …
Hey, nice to have a Luis Tiant sighting
The “he” in the previous comment about the Portland box scores is Tagg Bozied … I’m looking forward to his return to the Beavers’ lineup … and the prospect of his being able to contribute to the Padres this season, at least in September!
I always like to read interviews with Bill James … http://www.baseballdigestdaily.com/showArticle.asp?ArticleID=139 … he’s still my hero!
Every time someone interviews Bill James, they ask the exact same questions that are always asked of him.
