In-Game Discussion: Padres vs Pirates

Sun, Apr 10, 2005Ballhype: hype it up!
by Geoff Young

first pitch: 1:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Tim Redding vs Dave Williams

AB H HR BB SO BA OBP SLG
Redding vs current Pirates: 85 21 1 10 17 .247 .326 .329
Williams vs current Padres: 27 6 0 1 2 .222 .250 .370

Redding makes his first start for his new ballclub. The homer against is from former teammate Daryle Ward. The Wilsons also have had success against him. None of the current Padres have seen Williams enough to make any judgments. Looks like a great day out there; get down to Petco if you can - otherwise, grab yourself a drink and hang out for a while.

matchup: Oliver Perez vs Woody Williams

Still doesn’t seem right to see Ollie in a Pirate uniform, but I’m glad he’s found his niche in Pittsburgh. Wonder where he gets his taco shop fix when he’s in town. Personally I’d be at Lolita’s on Clairemont Mesa. Where would you go?

Woody put a pretty decent whipping on the Bucs last season going six innings, with a 1.33 WHIP, 0.00 ERA & 3.00 K/BB.

Unfortunately, Ollie looked almost as good against the Padres in two starts: 9.1 IP, 1.61 WHIP, 1.93 ERA, 1.38 K/BB.

El Asadero on El Cajon Blvd. Oh man that place is good. I may have to hit that for dinner.

I don’t get to San Diego very often … I’m a sucker for Rubio’s … but I’m going to try Lolita’s and El Asadero next time I’m down.

I’m just “watching” on Yahoo … Woody gets 3 Ks in top of 1st!!!

  5. LynchMob Says:

Anyone aware of reason Klesko’s not in the lineup tonight? Hyzdu in LF (Nady in CF) …

  6. LynchMob Says:

Woody puts ‘em down 1-2-3 in the 2nd … no K’s however :-)

    Current score: 0
  7. LynchMob Says:

Single to Sanchez, double to Lawton … Bucs on the board … up 1-0 after top of 3rd …

With Blum and Hyzdu hitting 7th & 8th, that’s a lot of outs down at the bottom of the lineup :-(

    Current score: 0
  8. Eric Says:

That rbi single by Woody was su-weeeet. Poked a nasty 0-2 backdoor slider up the middle.

    Current score: 0
  9. LynchMob Says:

Woody provides the missing “O” … a 2-out single to score Blum from second … none of Blum/Hyzdu/Williams made an out in the bottom of 4th :-) Pads up 2-1 …

    Current score: 0
  10. LynchMob Says:

Nevin connects to what Yahoo says was “deep center” … Pads back up 5-3 after 5 …

    Current score: 0
  11. LynchMob Says:

Woody gives up 6 IP … 94 pitches … decision for Bochy as Woody is due to lead-off the bottom of 6th … seems like time for a PH … but the ‘pen has been getting plenty of work …

    Current score: 0
  12. LynchMob Says:

Nady must be healthy … he’s now 3-for-4 after hitting a triple to deep right center to put Pads up 6-3 … now up 7-3 as Hyzdu manages a sac fly … Klesko now PH’ing …

    Current score: 0
  13. Eric Says:

Pirates announcers: “The Padres have a solid lineup, especially when Dave Roberts comes back…”

Do they notice what Roberts’ replacement Xavier Nady is doing?

  14. Eric Says:

I made that comment 5 seconds before Nady ripped that hangin’ curve for a 3-run homer

    Current score: 0
  15. LynchMob Says:

Add a 3-run shot to deep left by Nady to make it 11-3 … now 4-for-5 … needed one of his singles to be a double for a cycle! The dude is ON FIRE!

    Current score: 0
  16. LynchMob Says:

Hey, Bochy found a use for Darrel May … 9th inning of a blowout … well done! Padres win 11-3 … woulda been a fun one to be at Petco for!

Yahoo says D.Williams for the Bucs vs Redding for the Padres … why go to 5th starter (instead of Eaton)?

ps. Kerry Robinson stole his first base for the AAA Beavers tonight :-) … but otherwise is just hitting .154 … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_srcaaa_1

pps. Travis Chick did well in his first start at AA Mobile … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....x_mobaax_1 … and Paul McAnulty is off to a good start there!

by Geoff Young

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Brian Lawrence vs Josh Fogg

The Padres have drawn 24 walks in their first three games of the season, and issued just 9. Both of tonight’s starters are control artists, with Lawrence averaging 2.41 walks per 9 over 700+ career innings, and Fogg checking in at 3.03 over 500+ innings.

I’ll be roaming the park tonight in the new Akinori Otsuka T-shirt my wife bought me. Chat away, folks. I look forward to hearing more about blind midgets.

Following tonight’s games, the division is on pace to look like this (using RS:RA):
    West - Race W L PCT GB
    Los Angeles 103 59 .636 -
    San Diego 91 71 .562 6
    Arizona 74 88 .457 14.5
    Colorado 70 92 .432 16.5
    San Francisco 66 96 .407 18.5

It’s not worth anything, but it’s interesting just the same. Using W:L, the division is on pace to look more like LA (122-40), SD, ARI, & SF (81-81), and Colorado (54-108)

matchup: Jake Peavy vs Mark Redman

Redman vs current Padres: 32 12 1 3 1 .375 .429 .563

That looks real impressive till you realize that Geoff Blum and Eric Young are doing all the damage. Anyway, I’ll be at the game tonight so y’all are on your own for this one.

I guess I’ll start it. This is me falling asleep to the most boring pregame ceremony in the history of baseball. Do they have to do this every year?

And the new show on Ch. 4, Outta Left Field…mercy. Makes me long for the days of Jane Mitchell interviews.

I’m just “watching” on yahoo … Peavy’s stats are looking GREAT (5 IP, 2H, 1 BB, 9 Ks) … does that match what you’re seeing?

    What’s up (down) with Young?

Giles’ bat still looking good with double in the 4th …

    Otherwise … whassup?

10 K’s for Jake, now. He has been lights out this evening.

  5. LynchMob Says:

He just got yanked in the 7th after giving up a single and a walk … good move?

Pitch count = 96 … seems, from afar, like a good move.

I love Linebrink & Otsuka … but am VERY worried about Hoffy … but must confess that I’ve been worried about him for a couple of years now … and last year was GREAT …

    Current score: 0
  6. Richard Says:

I wouldn’t worry about Hoffy. Only three closers last year had a save rate of 90%+. Hoffy was one of them. Also, is he K:BB ratio was better than Gagne’s. His worst month has always been April and Coors Field is in Denver.

How in the world did I type “is he” instead of “his”? Nady with a chance to win it, now…

Bringing in Seanez for Otsuka with bases loaded & 2 outs … good move?

  12. LynchMob Says:

Good move :-) Of course it was the Bucs 25th man (Chris Duffy) that Seanez fanned … heart of the order coming up!

  13. Eric Says:

Seems that Hoffy’s now mediocre fastball allows him to get hit hard for these brief stretches where his command is a little off. In the past, he could get away with temporary imperfect location a bit more. By the end of the year, he will probably have typically solid numbers because he still locates that 85-89mph heater most of the time.

  14. LynchMob Says:

    Loretta / Giles / Nevin … down 1-2-3 … on to the 12th …

  31. Richard Says:

I would imagine Garcia has the inside track, but if Bochy insists on having a speed guy, Robinson could get the call-up. I’d prefer Jackson, actually. He plays the outfield and the infield.

  32. Richard Says:

Looks like Young is only day-to-day and will be re-evaluated tomorrow.

  33. Jeff Says:

Bochy was on the radio this morning, Garcia is getting the call, and they don’t know how long Young will be out but, in his words, “it looks bad”. It’s his right shoulder, and I’m guessing he’ll miss at least a couple months with this.

Bummer for him, 1st inning of his 1st start. That really is a blow to our bench, as well.

Hyzdu is absolute garbage. He has the strikezone judgement of a blind midget with his head on backwards.
