In-Game Discussion: Padres vs Giants
Tue, Apr 19, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Brian Lawrence vs Jerome Williams
Geez, could I have waited any longer to get this posted? I defer to Richard for the details on tonight’s contest. I’m not seeing a lot of success on the Padres side against Williams. For the Giants, Michael Tucker and Ray Durham have had the most success. J.T. Snow, too, but he’s not in the lineup.
Anyway, I’ll be lurking this evening: watching the game, making comments, putting together a little something on Sandy Alderson, etc. Feel free to hang out and chat.
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.
April 19, 2005 at 7:09 pm
Yikes. Klesko almost turned that pop fly off Vizquel’s bat into an inside-the-parker.
Infield in already? It’s the third batter of the game!
April 19, 2005 at 7:11 pm
Sean made a nice play checking the runner as the play went 6-3.
GB:FB ratio of 2:2.
April 19, 2005 at 7:12 pm
Hard to argue with the outcome: Two grounders to Burroughs, no runs score. Lawrence’s pitches are moving.
April 19, 2005 at 7:14 pm
Tim Flannery is way too excited about Dave Roberts. Ground ball back to the pitcher. But he has speed.
April 19, 2005 at 7:14 pm
Has Dave Roberts (even with last night’s success) hit a ball past the infield?
April 19, 2005 at 7:16 pm
Hell, if Roberts bats .250/.300/.350 he’d be a step up from our #1 hole production thus far. Flan can be excited.
April 19, 2005 at 7:17 pm
Giles smoked that ball for the third out…
April 19, 2005 at 7:18 pm
B-Law got a call there to make the count 1-2…
April 19, 2005 at 7:19 pm
And a second call to ring him up.
April 19, 2005 at 7:20 pm
The plate must look wider from behind. I’m done commenting on the strike zone.
April 19, 2005 at 7:20 pm
That was a nice pitch by Lawrence to strike out Tucker, but it was below the knees.
April 19, 2005 at 7:22 pm
FB:GB ratio is 4:2. 1 K 0 BB.
April 19, 2005 at 7:22 pm
Bucknor is calling the corners and the low pitches. That should help Lawrence.
No, I don’t believe Roberts has hit one out of the infield.
April 19, 2005 at 7:23 pm
Is the ump from San Diego? I’m not complaining…
April 19, 2005 at 7:24 pm
Ryno put good wood on that.
April 19, 2005 at 7:25 pm
Klesko’s stroke is looking real good.
April 19, 2005 at 7:25 pm
Ump is from Jamaica:
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/.....sp?id=2225
Google rocks.
April 19, 2005 at 7:26 pm
What’s coming on Alderson?
Ryno advances on the 6-3 PO.
April 19, 2005 at 7:27 pm
Wow (on the ump info). And wow again to Blum plating Klesko.
April 19, 2005 at 7:28 pm
Don’t know yet, still working on it. Nothing too exciting, but figured I ought to talk a little about the signing.
What’s up with Geoff Blum? This guy has been great.
April 19, 2005 at 7:29 pm
Did you see Sean turn on that ball? He hit it hard.
April 19, 2005 at 7:30 pm
Okay, it didn’t leave the infield, but good to see Burroughs pulling the ball sharply. Error? That ball was scalded. It was more of hit than Roberts’ grounder to Vizquel last night. Lance Niekro doesn’t have any Gold Gloves to his credit, so he gets the E.
April 19, 2005 at 7:31 pm
Dave Roberts would be a damn fine fifth outfielder/pinch runner on a team with real aspirations.
He’s sort of a poor man’s Gary Pettis, except without the Gold Glove.
April 19, 2005 at 7:32 pm
Too true. Flan had some decent commentary there. It would irk me to hear the players yapping about getting errors/hits in the game. I also enjoyed the Berra anecdote (which I’ve heard a hundred times).
April 19, 2005 at 7:32 pm
Yeah, that was a shot. A hit in my book.
April 19, 2005 at 7:33 pm
How many homers for Ramon? I vote 15-19.
April 19, 2005 at 7:35 pm
Ramon hits more than twenty, assuming no extended missed time. Ha would have last year, if not for the injury. Of course it’s silly to assume an entirely healthy year for a catcher who plays almost every day.
April 19, 2005 at 7:37 pm
I’m with Lance. If Ramon stays healthy, he hits 20+.
April 19, 2005 at 7:37 pm
3 GB to 5 FB. 2 K to 0 BB.
April 19, 2005 at 7:38 pm
I fear and expect he won’t remain healthy for the entire season. No good reasoning, just my expectation.
April 19, 2005 at 7:42 pm
Nice grab by Durham. A real shame.
April 19, 2005 at 7:42 pm
Wow. Where did Durham come from on that one?
April 19, 2005 at 7:44 pm
Lawrence is doin’ it with mirrors. Of course, mirrors worked for the Tudors, Tewks’, and Moyer’s of the world.
Leitner just said, “you fans are gonna LOVE Dave Roberts.”
Yes, we all have a fetish for guys who run fast.
I would have LOVED Tim Raines. Hell, the only thing Roberts has on Rickey Henderson RIGHT NOW is that he can play centerfield.
Great. Leitner said that Giles is “WAY overdue for a long ball.”
His next homer will now be in June.
And he just popped up. Friggin’ Leitner…
April 19, 2005 at 7:48 pm
Too cold, right?
April 19, 2005 at 7:48 pm
Omar Freaking Vizquel!?!?
Didn’t he used to be the back-up for Frank Tavares in Pittsburgh?
April 19, 2005 at 7:50 pm
Dude dropped that ball and he was wearing a glove…
April 19, 2005 at 7:51 pm
There must be a sabermetric explanation for the effect Ted Leitner’s inane commentary has on a baseball team. I’m just sayin’…
B-Law’s mirrors quit working…. tie ballgame.
April 19, 2005 at 7:51 pm
Crap. 3 singles this inning.
April 19, 2005 at 7:52 pm
4 singles, 2 runs…
April 19, 2005 at 7:53 pm
Flannery can shut up any time…
April 19, 2005 at 7:54 pm
Double-crap. 2-1.
Is Michael Tucker this generation’s Claudell Washington, except without the big 20-year-old season?
Sort of the same nondescript contributions…
April 19, 2005 at 7:55 pm
Only hard-hit balls have been outs.
April 19, 2005 at 7:55 pm
I can hit better than Mike Matheny. I’m just sure of it.
April 19, 2005 at 7:56 pm
5 GB : 10 FB. 2 K : 0 BB.
2 ER, though…
April 19, 2005 at 7:57 pm
This thread sure is growing. Have I accidentally wandered into Athletic’s Nation???
April 19, 2005 at 7:58 pm
Double Phil Nevin! I was right, the answer was cold. Rock on.
April 19, 2005 at 7:59 pm
Phiiiiil!!!!
You wonderful disgruntled stud!
April 19, 2005 at 7:59 pm
I’m afraid the Athletics Nation reference went over my head…
April 19, 2005 at 7:59 pm
Claudell Washington! Good call.
Is it great to see Nevin driving the ball to center?
April 19, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Sure is, Geoff. More small ball. Successful small ball, at that! RBI for Ramon.
April 19, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Coleman says Klesko “did the job.”
A two-run dong woulda been “doing the job.”
Now Ramon has “done the job.”
April 19, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Flan is cracking me up, btw…
April 19, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Flan on Ramon’s bloop base hit back of first base: “That’s not luck.” Um, yeah it is.
But we’ll take it.
April 19, 2005 at 8:02 pm
That actually was a nice piece of hitting by Klesko to pull that outside pitch.
April 19, 2005 at 8:02 pm
Richard, yer kiddin’ me, right?
April 19, 2005 at 8:02 pm
If Flannery says “veteran” one more time, so help me…
April 19, 2005 at 8:03 pm
I have no idea what comment that’s in regard to, Lance.
2B, at least, for Blum!
April 19, 2005 at 8:04 pm
I’m at the office late, listening to the folly that is Leitner/Coleman. Forgive my lack of insight.
BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!BLUM!!!
April 19, 2005 at 8:04 pm
Blum is out of control. He should have triplets more often.
April 19, 2005 at 8:05 pm
Just googled Athletics Nation, every post has 200+ comments… Damn.
April 19, 2005 at 8:06 pm
The Athletics Nation reference, Richard. Misguided Blez gots the wrong team, but a great blog.
Sean Burroughs, RBI MAN!!! 4-2 Pads!!!
April 19, 2005 at 8:07 pm
Flannery just complimented Picciolo on his coaching at third base. Should this scare me?
April 19, 2005 at 8:08 pm
I can’t believe you didn’t know about AN. You and I are gonna lift Geoff to the same heights. After all, Ducksnorts was one of the very first baseball blogs.
Now Dave Roberts is going to end the inning.
April 19, 2005 at 8:08 pm
Flan would have held him up at third.
April 19, 2005 at 8:10 pm
I only found Geoff’s blog because Jeff pointed the AOL Padres board to it. I read him, the Padre blogs he links to, and occasionally the Baseball Crank (think that’s the name…). I was oblivious to the existence of baseball blogging.
April 19, 2005 at 8:11 pm
That was a lousy Sut move…
April 19, 2005 at 8:11 pm
Did Blum have triplets? If this makes him 60% as good as Melvin Mora became after five babies (what’s that called again?), I’ll take him!
Dave Roberts walked! Stop the presses!
April 19, 2005 at 8:11 pm
Quintuplets?
April 19, 2005 at 8:12 pm
I think Blum’s wife is due next month with triplets…
April 19, 2005 at 8:13 pm
Williams has lost the plate. He ran the count full to Lawrence before walking Roberts.
Mrs. Blum is due May 8:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/.....notes.html
April 19, 2005 at 8:13 pm
Roberts has walked in both games back, now. Another crappy Sut move. He needs to quit that.
April 19, 2005 at 8:14 pm
Yeah, quintuplets!! What’d I go to college for, anyway?!?
Aren’t you the Friar Faithful guy, Richard? Whaddya mean about being oblivious to Baseball blogs?!?! (And yes, it’s Baseball Crank)
April 19, 2005 at 8:14 pm
That ball was smoked… right at the third baseman… :sigh:
April 19, 2005 at 8:15 pm
Williams got away with one to Loretta. He scalded that ball.
April 19, 2005 at 8:15 pm
I just started that a week ago or something, Lance.
April 19, 2005 at 8:19 pm
Keep it up, Richard. I stop by ALL the Padre blogs daily. Plus a couple dozen other baseball sites. Geoff probably knows ‘em all.
Goddamn Vizquel’s up again..
April 19, 2005 at 8:19 pm
Understatement of the season by Mark Grant: I’ve seen quite a few flyballs from Brian Lawrence tonight.
April 19, 2005 at 8:20 pm
6 GB : 12 FB. 2 K : 0 BB.
Some groundball pitcher…
April 19, 2005 at 8:20 pm
Don’t know if you guys have seen this, but CBS actually tracks the pitch locations. Here’s tonight’s game:
http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/.....0419_SF@SD
April 19, 2005 at 8:20 pm
Lawrence got the fearsome Omar Vizquel out!!! Huzzah!!!
April 19, 2005 at 8:20 pm
Doesn’t the thing on sandiego.padres.mlb.com do that, too?
April 19, 2005 at 8:22 pm
I wanna grab a bat and get in there!
Lemme at Fassero!
April 19, 2005 at 8:22 pm
Giles has owned Fassero…
April 19, 2005 at 8:24 pm
I’ve seen the CBS gadget. Cool stuff. I can only imagin ewhat Bill James would’ve done with such stuff in the late 70’s/early 80’s.
April 19, 2005 at 8:25 pm
7-18, 4 2B, now. Still not bad…
April 19, 2005 at 8:26 pm
Does Giles hit Fassero well? He used to be married to one of my sister’s best friends, BTY. Sonuva bitch cheated on her. Good ballplayer, though.
April 19, 2005 at 8:27 pm
Giles, not fassero (in reference to my last post)
April 19, 2005 at 8:28 pm
Yeah, what Lance said about SDPF. Keep it going, Richard!
April 19, 2005 at 8:29 pm
The Giles family are odd people. Especially Geoff Giles. He was heckling Brian so much, security tried to escort him away…
April 19, 2005 at 8:33 pm
Richard, doing daily what guys like Geoff, Blez, Gleeman, and Pinto do is a bit much to aspire to. FIVE-TWO PADS!!!! RRRRRRRAMON!
I’d be honored to pen an occasional post at your blog, to help fill things out and to give Pad devotees some additional reading material. E-mail me if you’re interested.
April 19, 2005 at 8:35 pm
What’s this Geoff Giles stuff?
April 19, 2005 at 8:36 pm
Sounds like a plan.
April 19, 2005 at 8:36 pm
Ffoeg (as he goes by) is just a knucklehead. He’s the Giles without talent.
April 19, 2005 at 8:37 pm
This site needs to be the best location for Padre writing and interaction, as well as pointless Pad gossip!!!
April 19, 2005 at 8:38 pm
He was screaming at Brian. He was yelling all kinds of weird things like how he’d seen him naked and something about his nipples. Ffoeg is hilarious.
April 19, 2005 at 8:39 pm
Alderson is at Petco; they just showed him.
I don’t care if they didn’t get either of those DPs, I love the way Loretta turns it. So quick.
April 19, 2005 at 8:40 pm
9 GB : 13 FB. 2 K : 0 BB.
April 19, 2005 at 8:40 pm
Is there a young Giles I don’t know? I played against Brian in high school, and remember Marcus inhigh school. Thare’s more?!?!
I’m leaving the office to go home and watch the rest of the game, so this may be my last post tonight. We’ll break 100 comments, for sure!
April 19, 2005 at 8:43 pm
Oh, so many misspellings in my last post. Shame…
Enjoy the rest of the game, boys. It’s been fun.
GO PADRES!!!
April 19, 2005 at 8:44 pm
Indeed it has been.
April 19, 2005 at 8:54 pm
11 GB : 14 FB. 2 K : 0 BB.
That GB:FB ratio has begun improving.
April 19, 2005 at 8:57 pm
Thanks for stopping by, Lance. See ya next time!
April 19, 2005 at 9:08 pm
13 GB : 15 FB. 2 K : 0 BB.
8 GB : 5 FB ratio from 5th inning on.
April 19, 2005 at 9:13 pm
B-Law went 8 strong innings throwing only 98 pitches.
April 19, 2005 at 9:16 pm
That was a real nice outing from Lawrence. I like the way he bounced back from the one bad inning.
Trevor Time!
April 19, 2005 at 9:17 pm
Nice 2-game sweep. Now we just need to “BEAT LA!”
