  1. Geoff Young Says:

Nobody’s ever gonna get bored watching Ryan Klesko play left field.

  2. Geoff Young Says:

Damn. Someone’s got to let Burroughs know that Jason Phillips is real slow.

  3. Richard Says:

Scott Erickson just registered his FIRST strikeout of the year.

  4. Eric Says:

    yeah…Burroughs’ swing looks really weak.

  5. Geoff Young Says:

It was nice to see an actual rally, though, in the first inning. I thought the ball Nevin hit was leaving the yard.

  6. Geoff Young Says:

Adam did a good job of getting out that jam. Drew and Kent have been killing us this year.

  7. Eric Says:

Geoff, I know you’re still holding out hope for big things from Burroughs. How do you feel about his approach at the plate so far this year? Does it look like any adjustments are happening?

  8. Richard Says:

You want a guy to start playing in the majors by 24. This is a big year for Sean.

    0.89 BB : 10 AB. That’s poor.
    1.56 SO : 10 AB. That’s pretty good, actually.
    1.14 BB : 2 SO. That’s also pretty good.
    0.83 XBH : 10 H. That’s awful.

He doesn’t walk enough, but at least he’s not giving up outs without making contact. Unfortunately, he has shown no power.

  9. Richard Says:

4-6-3. That’s what you like to see… For crying out loud. C’mon Padres. Burroughs needs to get the 2-out knock here…

  10. Eric Says:

Gee…Erickson’s sinker still looks pretty good.

  11. Eric Says:

    CAAAHMOOOON.

I feel like this is the type of pitcher we should MAUL at least one out of two tries. Just like I felt like Derek Lowe was the type of pitcher we should score an earned run at least one out of two tries. Geesh.

  12. Geoff Young Says:

Eric: I’m a little concerned about Burroughs because I’m not seeing him drive the ball much. That said, it could be that he’s still making adjustments.

  13. Eric Says:

    CAAAHMOOOON.

I feel like this is the type of pitcher we should MAUL at least one out of two tries. Just like I felt like Derek Lowe was the type of pitcher we should score an earned run at least one out of two tries. Geesh.

  14. Geoff Young Says:

We’ve missed a lot of opportunities in both series this year against LA.

  15. Geoff Young Says:

Klesko bails out Nevin. Two-out double, 3-0. Klesko is swinging the bat well.

And now he’s out of the game in favor of Nady.

  16. Richard Says:

What happened? I’ve given up the tv for Survivor…

  17. Geoff Young Says:

Vasgersian on Ramon’s two-run single to right: “Broken bat ducksnort.” Sweet!

I like it when Grant calls the bat a shillelagh. That’d be a good name for a blog, BTW.

    Or not.

  18. Eric Says:

    there we go.

it’s only fair that the hit that blows this game open was a broken bat flair. A ducksnort.

  19. Geoff Young Says:

It’s 5-0 in the fifth, Erickson is out of the game. Former Padre Buddy Carlyle is coming in.

  20. Richard Says:

    I vote “not.”

  21. Richard Says:

Sweet. And I think it’s “shillelagh.” Anyone?

  22. Richard Says:

I meant to drop the “g.”

  23. Richard Says:

Turns out they’re both right… blah

  24. Richard Says:

Ack, turns out I was wrong, rather. It’s “shillelagh” or “shillalah.” I suck. Back to the game.

  25. Richard Says:

    Did I kill the discussion?

  26. Geoff Young Says:

Hammond does a nice job. Inherits runners at second and third with no out and only allows one to score. How did Giles not throw Drew out at the plate on that play? That was a pretty shallow ball, and it looked like Giles set up to make a good throw but then it was cut off.

  27. Eric Says:

ahh…this is the way it should be. Some wiggle room for the pen to work with.

  28. Geoff Young Says:

Naw, I’m still around. Um, how was that pitch to Burroughs a strike? No matter; base knock.

  29. LynchMob Says:

I’m interested in what you think of Carlyle … I’m a roto-geek and just picked him up … I’ve got Gagne, who looks to be out until mid-May or later … thought I read some good things about Buddy … what do you think, based on what you’re seeing in the game tonight? Thanks.

  30. Geoff Young Says:

Oh my. Roberts hit one out of the infield. Way out of the infield.

  31. Richard Says:

Roberts hit that ball hard into the gap.

  32. Richard Says:

Assuming the Padres hold on to win this one, that’d make them 3-0 in games started by Roberts.

  33. Geoff Young Says:

Carlyle has a nice breaking ball working, but guys are making good contact. Maybe if everything breaks right he’s another Brian Meadows?

  34. Geoff Young Says:

Good call, Richard. I was just thinking that.

  35. Richard Says:

What is that thing around Dave’s neck?

  36. Richard Says:

Brian Meadows as a ceiling? heh

  37. Geoff Young Says:

Well, Carlyle looked good against Giles.

  38. Geoff Young Says:

You know, generic middle reliever. And I have no idea what that thing is around Roberts’ neck, but it seems to be working. ;-)

  39. Richard Says:

    There is no strikezone.

  40. Richard Says:

Grant said it’s a bike lock. I’ll go with that.

  41. Richard Says:

9 multi-hit games in 15 games played for Choi? Damn.

  42. Richard Says:

    Hammond is looking really good.

  43. Geoff Young Says:

Yeah, I’m liking the Hammond signing a lot. Could be the best $750k spent this off-season.

  44. Richard Says:

That was a hard-hit out by Nady.

  45. Geoff Young Says:

Balls and strikes have been very inconsistent each of the past two nights.

  46. Geoff Young Says:

Geez, could Nevin be any slower?

  47. Richard Says:

I think he was safe. Didn’t look like Phillips got the tag down before Phil touched home.

  48. Geoff Young Says:

Ducksnorts reader Ed Barnes gets his name mentioned on air. Attaboy, Ed!

  49. Geoff Young Says:

Seanez needed six pitches to get through the eighth. Looks like the Dodgers have given up.

  50. LynchMob Says:

    Bullpen is on cruise control!!!

  51. LynchMob Says:

What did Ed do that got an on-air mention?

  52. Richard Says:

    What about Ed?

  53. LynchMob Says:

Yahoo says “J. Garcia flied out to deep center” … how deep?

  54. Richard Says:

Loretta seemed to slow down coming into third…

  55. Geoff Young Says:

Let’s not run on Bradley anymore.

  56. Geoff Young Says:

Matt and Mud were trying to come up with different names for a changeup, and Ed suggested “I-5″ (as in 65 mph). Ed’s their stats guy.

Guess that would make I-15 a fastball. ;-)

  57. Richard Says:

Nice one, Jeff. Nice to see the Dodgers getting tossed.

  58. Geoff Young Says:

Somebody just got tossed for arguing balls and strikes. And now Tracy is gone. Valentin and Tracy are both gone. Couldn’t bear to watch the final two outs.

  59. Richard Says:

*Geoff. And that flyball by Grabowski got the heart pumping a little…

  60. Richard Says:

    Padres win. Thank goodness.

  61. Geoff Young Says:

Yep, but you know what? Petco taketh away. Ledee pops weakly to Nevin, and that’s your game. Nice to see ‘em take one from LA. Good way to end the homestand.

    Thanks, all, for the chat!

  62. Eric Says:

    NICE.

    beat LA.

  63. LynchMob Says:

Just looking at the box score … anybody else worried about the 2 BBs (too many) or the 2 Ks (too few)?

So far, good ERA (2.91), but poor WHIP (1.40) … too any walks …

  64. Richard Says:

Adam has only allowed 4 runs over his last three starts. I have no intention of worrying.

As an aside, even on the replay I thought Nevin’s Sac. Fly was going out. ha

In-Game Discussion: Padres vs Dodgers

Wed, Apr 20, 2005Ballhype: hype it up!
by Geoff Young

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Woody Williams vs Derek Lowe

Good to see the Pads complete the sweep of SF. In case you missed it, they beat the Giants, 5-2 behind Brian Lawrence’s strong pitching. Richard, Lance, and I had a solid chat going throughout the game. Where were you?

So now that Lawrence has gotten a good start under his belt, maybe Williams can follow suit. He’s surrendered four bombs over his first three outings. On the bright side, Williams does have a 2.86 ERA against the Dodgers in 91.1 innings. His counterpart, Lowe, spun a three-hit shutout against the Padres last week up in LA. The batters will need to adjust and figure out how to handle his power sinker.

Dave Roberts isn’t doing much at the plate, but the club has won both games he’s played. Geoff Blum continues to surprise in Khalil Greene’s absence, hitting .280/.333/.560 in the early going. And to those who worry about the Padres’ relatively slow start, just remember that if this were the NFL, we’d be tied up about halfway through the second quarter of the second game. Plus we’d be watching football, so at least we’ve got that going for us.

I’ll be out at the park tonight. Talk amongst yourselves…

  1. Jay Says:

I caught the Lawrence game last night. Hard to tell whether it was bad hitting or good pitching, but over the last few innings everyone was grounding out weakly. I was hoping the Pads would get one or two more insurance runs, but the Bonds-less Giants are a lot less scary. Snow-less and Alou-less at that.

I am keeping nervous watch over our 3-4-5 players, even our 2-3-4-5. 2, Loretta, has a nice OBP but his power is way down. If it stays down but his OBP stays up, we may our leadoff hitter. Giles-Nevin-Klesko all look OK, but won’t feel comfortable until I see OPS all in the mid to upper 800s. They are all in 600s and 700s, not what you want from the core of your line up.

  2. Geoff Young Says:

Thanks for the report, Jay. The good news is, even though they may not be putting up the numbers yet, at least they’re all swinging the bat pretty well. Nevin has hit doubles to dead center each of the past two nights. Encouraging…

  3. Richard Says:

To Jay: Klesko and Nevin are in the .600s & .700s of OPS, but Giles is not. Also, Brian’s Secondary Average is third highest in MLB (2nd in NL).

    Name: BA/SecA/OBP/SLG/OPS
    Giles: .208/.583/.375/.500/.875
    Klesko: .224/.306/.333/.408/.741
    Nevin: .196/.232/.246/.357/.603

  4. Richard Says:

    Those unis are sharp.

  5. Richard Says:

That double by Drew seemed to hang up in the air forever, but Klesko was shaded toward center and had none chance for a play.

  6. Richard Says:

Woody handled that the right way. It’s better to walk Kent than serve one up.

  7. Richard Says:

Nice to see Woody get out of that little jam. Padres need to get at Lowe early and give a cushion.

  8. Richard Says:

Blum saw 9 pitches in his first AB.

  9. Richard Says:

Good call by the ump. He was safe.

  10. Richard Says:

    3-pitch K against Giles. That was a lousy at-bat.

  11. Richard Says:

Way to cash in! RBI single for Phil Nevin.

Padres continue to impress with small-ball play during this homestand.

  12. Lance Says:

Nevin’s AB was better. What are the most recent stats on winning percentages of teams scoring the first run?

  13. Richard Says:

Can the Padres get another knock with 2-outs and RISP?

  14. Richard Says:

    Guess they couldn’t. Welcome, Lance.

  15. Richard Says:

Mark Grant: Padres 4-0 when scoring first this year.

  16. Richard Says:

    Nakamura’s swing is crazy.

  17. Lance Says:

Leitner mentioned Mel Ott. I still think he (Leitner) doesn’t have a clue, but his reference almost swayed me to the dark side.

  18. Lance Says:

Ted and Jerry are discussing pooka (sp?) shells on the ballfield. Surely they remember that in the 70’s, pissloads of ballplayers took the field wearing them.

  19. Richard Says:

What a great play by Ramon! WOW.

  20. Lance Says:

Phillips couldn’t run the bases at El Cap, either…

  21. Richard Says:

Phillips actually did a good job. He was waved home. He avoided the tag. Ramon just did an amazing job of recovering to beat Phillips to the plate.

  22. Lance Says:

Once again, I’m at the office and cannot SEE the plays.
I hope to head home before the end, to watch on 110-inch HDTV.

  23. Richard Says:

Nady gets down to first pretty quickly. I took him for a slower player. Burroughs HBP. Good job, Sean. heh

  24. Lance Says:

Ramon’s a terrific player. I suspect that we’ll be seeing another player don the tools of ignorance next year, however.

  25. Richard Says:

I get the feeling you’re right. Four Years, 40 mil is high. Damn, Dodgers turn two…

  26. Richard Says:

Just saw your HDTV post. HDTV was invented for watching baseball. Of this, I am sure.

  27. Richard Says:

Hey, why the hell didn’t Woody bunt?

  28. Lance Says:

Nady’s a good athelete. As a former CF, I can’t imagine the Pads throwing him out there if he couldn’t run.
Then again, I don’t necessarily think like the typical Major League GM or manager.

  29. Lance Says:

Richard, of this I am sure: you type faster than I do.
HD at 110 inches is not as clear as it is at 65, or 52, inches, but it may be more IMPRESSIVE, especially accompanied by a couple thousand watt surround system. We’ll have to watch a game together soon. I’m not too far from you.
Oh, and Leitner’s not that big a drinker. He just said so on the air. There goes the one thing I thought he and I might have in common.

  30. Richard Says:

Sweet play by Geoff Blum. 6-3 DP.

  31. Lance Says:

DP excited Leitner. I was only listening on the radio, so it could have been routine.

  32. Richard Says:

Fair point about X’s athleticism as a CF. I guess I think of him more as a corner (outfied/infield) guy.

  33. Lance Says:

I’ll take Richard’s word for it. He knows more about baseball than Ted.

  34. Richard Says:

DP was a line-out and a good throw to double up Drew.

  35. Richard Says:

Not a Leitner fan? You didn’t enjoy his vasectomy discussion, then?

  36. Richard Says:

How often do you see a called strike on the outside part of the plate get away from the catcher? Odd looking.

  37. Richard Says:

Lance, did you get the e-mail from blogger?

  38. Richard Says:

Flannery and Glen Hoffman apparently dated the same girl for two years. That’s some excellent baseball analysis, Flan.

  39. Lance Says:

About X, rightfully so. He IS more suited to the corners. He’s sort of like Giles, or a poor man’s Winfield, in that he’s a GOOD outfielder, which makes him a passable CF.
Winfield could play anywhere in the outfield at a Gold Glove level in his prime (I know because I was watching), which separates him. Maybe a better comp would be Kevin McReynolds.
And what’s wrong with Ollie Perez?!?!

  40. Richard Says:

He got his ERA down to 9.00 since I did the Giles trade check-up.

  41. Lance Says:

Was honored to receive the e-mail. I responded to your Blogger-provided addy. Lemme know if you didn’t get it, you needy schmuck :-)

  42. Richard Says:

Channel 4 Question: Who is the last Dodger to hit a homerun from both sides of the plate in the same game? (prior to Milton Bradley the other night)

  43. Richard Says:

I don’t check my e-mail. Eddie Murray is my guess, btw.

  44. Lance Says:

I’d still undo that trade. But I was OK with it at the time. I was actually thrilled to give up only Bay, and not X, and I’d have rather given up Peavy than Perez at the time(silly me…)

  45. Richard Says:

I think X will be better than Bay. Thought so at the time, too.

  46. Richard Says:

Nice catch by Hernandez up against the wall there.

  47. Lance Says:

You don’t check your e-mail?!?! A fine blogger you’ll make! Do I have to post my info in the comments of Ducksnorts?!?!
I am SO giving you **** when I meet you in person!
    Another Star-hanging I can’t see! Woe is me…

  48. Richard Says:
