In-Game Discussion: Padres vs Diamondbacks (29 Apr 2005)
Fri, Apr 29, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Jake Peavy (2-0, 1.30 ERA) vs Brandon Webb (3-0, 2.63 ERA)
game previews: ESPN | CBS SportsLine | SI | Padres.com
A rematch of the April 23 contest in Phoenix.
AB BA OBP SLG
Peavy vs current Diamondbacks 124 .258 .316 .460
Webb vs current Padres 126 .175 .212 .214
Luis Gonzalez still destroys Peavy (.450/.522/1.000); Webb still neutralizes the Friars. I know it’s early, I know it’s a small sample, but I love these numbers from Peavy: .083/.154/.083. That’s what guys are hitting against him in the first three innings of games.
Tonight’s Lineup: Last Seven Days
AB BA OBP SLG
Dave Roberts 17 .294 .333 .529
Mark Loretta 26 .192 .250 .192
Brian Giles 20 .250 .348 .300
Phil Nevin 21 .286 .318 .762
Ryan Klesko 20 .250 .400 .550
Ramon Hernandez 20 .150 .190 .450
Geoff Blum 23 .261 .320 .391
Sean Burroughs 11 .273 .385 .273
Padres 206 .218 .300 .408

Second pitch of the game, Klesko takes down Blum on a pop fly. Get Klesko out of left field.
Blum was down for a long time but now he’s on his feet.
April 29, 2005 at 7:09 pm
Looks like Blum will stay in the game. Counsell on second with a “double.”
April 29, 2005 at 7:10 pm
Correction: Blum is out, Garcia is in. Peavy is taking more warmup pitches. What a lousy way to start the homestand.
April 29, 2005 at 7:50 pm
A non-update on Blum’s condition:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/arti.....649D83.DTL
April 29, 2005 at 7:55 pm
Vasgersian on Blum: Removed for precuationary reasons. Left chest contusion (deep bruise). He’ll be re-evaluated over the next 48 hours.
That’s a relief. He stayed down for a long time.
April 29, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Homer Glaus. Webb has two runs to work with; this could be a long night.
April 29, 2005 at 8:28 pm
I’d still rather have Klesko in the lineup, mauling shortstops and all, than Adam Hydzu.
April 29, 2005 at 8:32 pm
This is the second consecutive game that I’ve tuned in right before Nevin homers.
April 29, 2005 at 8:35 pm
Guys are hitting Webb tonight. Just dropping the bat head and hitting line drives. Except Nevin. He dialed up on that one.
April 29, 2005 at 8:36 pm
Fourth inning was great. Pads scored three runs with two outs. Key at-bat: Webb is ahead of Peavy 0-2 and walks him. Roberts and Loretta follow with singles.
April 29, 2005 at 8:39 pm
ESPN has Webb at 96 pitches through 5 IP. I’d love to get into that bullpen.
Andy Ashby update: He’s with the club, still rehabbing. Grant does a great Ashby.
April 29, 2005 at 8:40 pm
C’mon, where’s the love for Hyzdu?
April 29, 2005 at 8:45 pm
D’backs calls it a “terrific catch” by Klesko. Says the 6-3 230-pounder is moving out there like a lightweight. Somehow I didn’t see it that way.
April 29, 2005 at 8:46 pm
Loretta: THAT was a good play.
April 29, 2005 at 8:49 pm
Klesko’s was pretty good. I didn’t expect him to catch it.
April 29, 2005 at 8:56 pm
Heckuva sequence Webb worked to punch out Giles to end the sixth. 3-1 changeup, followed by 3-2 curve to get him looking. Damn.
April 29, 2005 at 9:12 pm
That is one of the most amazing defensive plays I’ve ever seen. Pop fly behind short. Bounces off Garcia’s glove as he’s falling down. Garcia sees Roberts coming in and has the presence of mind to bat the ball up in the air, Roberts makes the catch. Unbelieveable.
April 29, 2005 at 9:12 pm
Peavy’s hitting 94 mph in the eighth.
April 29, 2005 at 9:13 pm
Peavy wants Gonzo bad. I can see it in his eyes.
April 29, 2005 at 9:14 pm
what a battle
April 29, 2005 at 9:16 pm
I don’t think Garcia meant to bat the ball up…I think he was trying to catch it…nevertheless, was an awesome play.
April 29, 2005 at 9:18 pm
Peavy deserves this one. He pitched outstanding tonight. Trevor needs to close this one down.
April 29, 2005 at 9:36 pm
Trevor misses with location, Clark singles on an 0-2 pitch to tie the game.
April 29, 2005 at 9:37 pm
disgusting
April 29, 2005 at 9:38 pm
Yeah, that stunk. Ramon was practically out of his crouch trying to get Trevor to keep the pitch up and out of the strike zone.
April 29, 2005 at 9:40 pm
Koplove vs Giles: .167/.286/.167
Koplove vs Nevin: .250/.250/.250
April 29, 2005 at 9:42 pm
Glaus makes a bad throw on a Nevin grounder. It’s all up to… Adam Hyzdu.
April 29, 2005 at 9:44 pm
Hyzdu singles. Hernandez is hitless in three career at-bats against Koplove.
April 29, 2005 at 10:01 pm
Linebrink makes Glaus look very bad to end the top of the 10th. LOB: Ari 6, SD 11.
Tonight is the first time a team other than the Padres has scored as many as four runs at Petco this year.
April 29, 2005 at 10:03 pm
really? wow
April 29, 2005 at 10:03 pm
if I hear the arizona announcers say “there’s something about this diamondbacks team” one more time, I’m gonna hurl
April 29, 2005 at 10:04 pm
You spent hundreds of millions on players, that’s the something about this team.
April 29, 2005 at 10:09 pm
Nady’s first at-bat of the night comes in the 10th. He lunges at the first pitch to pop weakly to right. I’m concerned that irregular playing time is going to adversely affect him.
Burroughs steals a base on a pitchout. Beautiful.
April 29, 2005 at 10:19 pm
My favorite unsuccessful pitchout incident is this one where the hitter swung at it (was a hit-and-run) and tomahawked a chopper through the hole. It was just hilarious because it must have been insanely irritating for a team to guess right and initiate a pitchout, only to see the hitter pull-off one of the luckiest base-hits you can think of.
April 29, 2005 at 10:19 pm
Reason for hope, or grasping at straws?
Inning 7+
Padres: .257/.361/.443
Opponents: .224/.307/.341
April 29, 2005 at 10:20 pm
Yes, I think I remember that one.
Glaus loses a grounder in the lights. Loretta chopped it high off the plate.
April 29, 2005 at 10:21 pm
Giles w/runners on: .286/.400/.514
April 29, 2005 at 10:22 pm
Is it me, or is Poncino a little inconsistent calling that low pitch tonight?
April 29, 2005 at 10:22 pm
I say it’s a reason for straws.
I’ll drink to that!
April 29, 2005 at 10:23 pm
WOW…Giles had a green light on 3-0 and fouls out
April 29, 2005 at 10:23 pm
Giles hacking 3-0 pops to third. Yuck.
April 29, 2005 at 10:23 pm
I think Giles is a little too anxious to break out of his slump
April 29, 2005 at 10:24 pm
You may be right. That wasn’t a real good pitch to swing at 3-0.
April 29, 2005 at 10:25 pm
I think Giles is a little too anxious to break out of his slump
April 29, 2005 at 10:25 pm
Padres use their last position player, Miguel Ojeda, to bat for Seanez. Extra bases would be good.
April 29, 2005 at 10:26 pm
This guy has a good breaking ball.
April 29, 2005 at 10:29 pm
Ojeda looked lost against Cormier. We go to the 12th.
April 29, 2005 at 10:33 pm
Koyie Hill bats for Arizona. All position players have now been used. If it goes much further, look for Woody, Eaton, or B-Law to get the call.
April 29, 2005 at 10:34 pm
how’s Otsuka look?
April 29, 2005 at 10:35 pm
Jesse Garcia’s off-balance throw almost pulls Nevin off the bag. I miss Khalil.
April 29, 2005 at 10:39 pm
that was weird…when Cintron hopped up in that backhand-n-throw attempt w/o unleashing a throw, for a split-second I said to myself, “hey that’s traveling”
April 29, 2005 at 10:44 pm
Aki looks good; the slider is biting. LOL about traveling.
Matt & Mud: This is the first game in the history of Petco to go longer than 12 innings.
Get comfortable; we could be here a while.
April 29, 2005 at 10:50 pm
yeah Aki looks sharper than I’ve seen him all year.
April 29, 2005 at 10:50 pm
This is as good as I’ve seen Aki since last year. Real nice sequence to Glaus to end the 13th.
April 29, 2005 at 10:51 pm
Top of the order: Roberts, Loretta, Giles. They’ve been on base seven times so far combined.
April 29, 2005 at 10:52 pm
LOB: Ari 6, SD 14
April 29, 2005 at 10:58 pm
I like watching Hammond pitch
April 29, 2005 at 11:01 pm
Oh yeah. That change is sick. Great signing.
April 29, 2005 at 11:03 pm
Good chance we’ll get to see Hammond hit, too. He’s due up second in the 14th. Career .204/.288/.294.
April 29, 2005 at 11:03 pm
Just got home for the last inning or so. I was watching this one at work though.
April 29, 2005 at 11:04 pm
Nevin wants to end this right now. I can see it in his swing
April 29, 2005 at 11:07 pm
dang…I thought Arizona’s pen was supposed to be horrendous.
April 29, 2005 at 11:09 pm
Eight consecutive balls.
April 29, 2005 at 11:10 pm
Choate has thrown eight straight balls. Lyon is the only guy left in their ‘pen. Now is the time.
April 29, 2005 at 11:10 pm
dang…I thought Arizona’s pen was supposed to be horrendous.
April 29, 2005 at 11:10 pm
Eight straight balls, and Burroughs is first pitch swinging?
Ramon gets to squat another inning.
April 29, 2005 at 11:11 pm
Dumb at-bat by Burroughs. What was that?
April 29, 2005 at 11:11 pm
Giles swings 3-0 in a 1-run game. Burroughs swings away after back-to-back 4-pitch walks. wtf?
April 29, 2005 at 11:12 pm
They are pressing big time.
April 29, 2005 at 11:14 pm
In that situation, it has to be like a high school game, where everyone in the dugout says, “He has to throw a you a strike before the at-bats begins.” That at-bat shouldn’t have been left up to Burroughs.
April 29, 2005 at 11:16 pm
is it me or does every Hammond inning seem to end before it starts? =)
April 29, 2005 at 11:17 pm
Agreed, that was not smart. Lyon to pitch the 15th. This could really mess up the Snakes for the weekend.
April 29, 2005 at 11:21 pm
Damn. Nady had to wait and couldn’t score on the single from second.
April 29, 2005 at 11:21 pm
Sweet Loretta!
April 29, 2005 at 11:22 pm
Bases loaded, one out for Nevin.
Nevin with bases loaded 2002-2005: .483/.469/.759
April 29, 2005 at 11:23 pm
Candlesticks make a nice gift.
April 29, 2005 at 11:23 pm
Woody in the on-deck circle.
April 29, 2005 at 11:23 pm
I think it’d be funny if a pitcher threw a strike on the 3-0 pitch of an intentional walk. Just to see what the hitter does.
April 29, 2005 at 11:24 pm
Why is Nevin swinging at that?
April 29, 2005 at 11:25 pm
Padres win! Padres win! Padres win!
April 29, 2005 at 11:25 pm
All is forgiven. Pads win!
April 29, 2005 at 11:26 pm
Good night. It’s 2:26 on the right coast.
April 29, 2005 at 11:26 pm
Man, that was a little more drama than we needed but a win is a win. Good chatting with you, gents!
April 29, 2005 at 11:40 pm
“All is forgiven.”
such a perfect summary of the feeling
April 30, 2005 at 12:13 am
Peavy suffers another no decision. At least they won, right?
“All is forgiven.” Exactly…
