In-Game Discussion: Padres vs Diamondbacks (29 Apr 2005)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Jake Peavy (2-0, 1.30 ERA) vs Brandon Webb (3-0, 2.63 ERA)
game previews: ESPN | CBS SportsLine | SI | Padres.com

A rematch of the April 23 contest in Phoenix.

                                AB BA OBP SLG
Peavy vs current Diamondbacks 124 .258 .316 .460
Webb vs current Padres 126 .175 .212 .214

Luis Gonzalez still destroys Peavy (.450/.522/1.000); Webb still neutralizes the Friars. I know it’s early, I know it’s a small sample, but I love these numbers from Peavy: .083/.154/.083. That’s what guys are hitting against him in the first three innings of games.

Tonight’s Lineup: Last Seven Days

                  AB BA OBP SLG
Dave Roberts 17 .294 .333 .529
Mark Loretta 26 .192 .250 .192
Brian Giles 20 .250 .348 .300
Phil Nevin 21 .286 .318 .762

Ryan Klesko 20 .250 .400 .550
Ramon Hernandez 20 .150 .190 .450
Geoff Blum 23 .261 .320 .391
Sean Burroughs 11 .273 .385 .273

Padres 206 .218 .300 .408
Opponents 207 .309 .374 .488

Second pitch of the game, Klesko takes down Blum on a pop fly. Get Klesko out of left field.

Blum was down for a long time but now he’s on his feet.

  2. Posted April 29, 2005 at 7:09 pm | Permalink

Looks like Blum will stay in the game. Counsell on second with a “double.”

  3. Posted April 29, 2005 at 7:10 pm | Permalink

Correction: Blum is out, Garcia is in. Peavy is taking more warmup pitches. What a lousy way to start the homestand.

    A non-update on Blum’s condition:

Vasgersian on Blum: Removed for precuationary reasons. Left chest contusion (deep bruise). He’ll be re-evaluated over the next 48 hours.

That’s a relief. He stayed down for a long time.

Homer Glaus. Webb has two runs to work with; this could be a long night.

  7. Posted April 29, 2005 at 8:28 pm | Permalink

I’d still rather have Klesko in the lineup, mauling shortstops and all, than Adam Hydzu.

  8. Posted April 29, 2005 at 8:32 pm | Permalink

This is the second consecutive game that I’ve tuned in right before Nevin homers.

  9. Posted April 29, 2005 at 8:35 pm | Permalink

Guys are hitting Webb tonight. Just dropping the bat head and hitting line drives. Except Nevin. He dialed up on that one.

  10. Posted April 29, 2005 at 8:36 pm | Permalink

Fourth inning was great. Pads scored three runs with two outs. Key at-bat: Webb is ahead of Peavy 0-2 and walks him. Roberts and Loretta follow with singles.

  11. Posted April 29, 2005 at 8:39 pm | Permalink

ESPN has Webb at 96 pitches through 5 IP. I’d love to get into that bullpen.

Andy Ashby update: He’s with the club, still rehabbing. Grant does a great Ashby.

    C’mon, where’s the love for Hyzdu? ;-)

  13. Posted April 29, 2005 at 8:45 pm | Permalink

D’backs calls it a “terrific catch” by Klesko. Says the 6-3 230-pounder is moving out there like a lightweight. Somehow I didn’t see it that way.

  14. Posted April 29, 2005 at 8:46 pm | Permalink

Loretta: THAT was a good play.

  15. Posted April 29, 2005 at 8:49 pm | Permalink

Klesko’s was pretty good. I didn’t expect him to catch it.

  16. Posted April 29, 2005 at 8:56 pm | Permalink

Heckuva sequence Webb worked to punch out Giles to end the sixth. 3-1 changeup, followed by 3-2 curve to get him looking. Damn.

  17. Posted April 29, 2005 at 9:12 pm | Permalink

That is one of the most amazing defensive plays I’ve ever seen. Pop fly behind short. Bounces off Garcia’s glove as he’s falling down. Garcia sees Roberts coming in and has the presence of mind to bat the ball up in the air, Roberts makes the catch. Unbelieveable.

  18. Posted April 29, 2005 at 9:12 pm | Permalink

Peavy’s hitting 94 mph in the eighth.

  19. Posted April 29, 2005 at 9:13 pm | Permalink

Peavy wants Gonzo bad. I can see it in his eyes.

  20. Posted April 29, 2005 at 9:14 pm | Permalink

    what a battle

  21. Posted April 29, 2005 at 9:16 pm | Permalink

I don’t think Garcia meant to bat the ball up…I think he was trying to catch it…nevertheless, was an awesome play.

  22. Posted April 29, 2005 at 9:18 pm | Permalink

Peavy deserves this one. He pitched outstanding tonight. Trevor needs to close this one down.

  23. Posted April 29, 2005 at 9:36 pm | Permalink

Trevor misses with location, Clark singles on an 0-2 pitch to tie the game.

  24. Posted April 29, 2005 at 9:37 pm | Permalink

    disgusting

  25. Posted April 29, 2005 at 9:38 pm | Permalink

Yeah, that stunk. Ramon was practically out of his crouch trying to get Trevor to keep the pitch up and out of the strike zone.

Glaus makes a bad throw on a Nevin grounder. It’s all up to… Adam Hyzdu.

Hyzdu singles. Hernandez is hitless in three career at-bats against Koplove.

Linebrink makes Glaus look very bad to end the top of the 10th. LOB: Ari 6, SD 11.

Tonight is the first time a team other than the Padres has scored as many as four runs at Petco this year.

    really? wow

  31. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:03 pm | Permalink

if I hear the arizona announcers say “there’s something about this diamondbacks team” one more time, I’m gonna hurl

  32. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:04 pm | Permalink

You spent hundreds of millions on players, that’s the something about this team.

  33. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:09 pm | Permalink

Nady’s first at-bat of the night comes in the 10th. He lunges at the first pitch to pop weakly to right. I’m concerned that irregular playing time is going to adversely affect him.

Burroughs steals a base on a pitchout. Beautiful.

  34. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:19 pm | Permalink

My favorite unsuccessful pitchout incident is this one where the hitter swung at it (was a hit-and-run) and tomahawked a chopper through the hole. It was just hilarious because it must have been insanely irritating for a team to guess right and initiate a pitchout, only to see the hitter pull-off one of the luckiest base-hits you can think of.

  36. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:20 pm | Permalink

Yes, I think I remember that one.

Glaus loses a grounder in the lights. Loretta chopped it high off the plate.

  38. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:22 pm | Permalink

Is it me, or is Poncino a little inconsistent calling that low pitch tonight?

  39. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:22 pm | Permalink

    I say it’s a reason for straws.

    I’ll drink to that!

  40. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:23 pm | Permalink

WOW…Giles had a green light on 3-0 and fouls out

  41. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:23 pm | Permalink

Giles hacking 3-0 pops to third. Yuck.

  42. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:23 pm | Permalink

I think Giles is a little too anxious to break out of his slump

  43. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:24 pm | Permalink

You may be right. That wasn’t a real good pitch to swing at 3-0.

  44. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:25 pm | Permalink

Padres use their last position player, Miguel Ojeda, to bat for Seanez. Extra bases would be good.

  46. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:26 pm | Permalink

This guy has a good breaking ball.

  47. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:29 pm | Permalink

Ojeda looked lost against Cormier. We go to the 12th.

  48. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:33 pm | Permalink

Koyie Hill bats for Arizona. All position players have now been used. If it goes much further, look for Woody, Eaton, or B-Law to get the call.

    how’s Otsuka look?

  50. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:35 pm | Permalink

Jesse Garcia’s off-balance throw almost pulls Nevin off the bag. I miss Khalil.

  51. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:39 pm | Permalink

that was weird…when Cintron hopped up in that backhand-n-throw attempt w/o unleashing a throw, for a split-second I said to myself, “hey that’s traveling”

  52. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:44 pm | Permalink

Aki looks good; the slider is biting. LOL about traveling.

Matt & Mud: This is the first game in the history of Petco to go longer than 12 innings.

Get comfortable; we could be here a while.

  53. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:50 pm | Permalink

yeah Aki looks sharper than I’ve seen him all year.

  54. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:50 pm | Permalink

This is as good as I’ve seen Aki since last year. Real nice sequence to Glaus to end the 13th.

  55. Posted April 29, 2005 at 10:51 pm | Permalink

Eight straight balls, and Burroughs is first pitch swinging?

Ramon gets to squat another inning.

  67. Kevin
    Posted April 29, 2005 at 11:11 pm | Permalink

Dumb at-bat by Burroughs. What was that?

  68. Posted April 29, 2005 at 11:11 pm | Permalink

Giles swings 3-0 in a 1-run game. Burroughs swings away after back-to-back 4-pitch walks. wtf?

    They are pressing big time.

  70. Kevin
    Posted April 29, 2005 at 11:14 pm | Permalink

In that situation, it has to be like a high school game, where everyone in the dugout says, “He has to throw a you a strike before the at-bats begins.” That at-bat shouldn’t have been left up to Burroughs.

  71. Posted April 29, 2005 at 11:16 pm | Permalink

is it me or does every Hammond inning seem to end before it starts? =)

  72. Posted April 29, 2005 at 11:17 pm | Permalink

Agreed, that was not smart. Lyon to pitch the 15th. This could really mess up the Snakes for the weekend.

  73. Posted April 29, 2005 at 11:21 pm | Permalink
