Jennings, like every other pitcher, struggles at Coors, posting a 6.00+ ERA there last season. He also saw a slight drop in night games vs. day games, but I doubt that will effect him.

Hopefully that air doesn’t mess with Eaton’s curve that he’s been working on, and I think our offense will take care of the rest.

The bad news, however, is this:

    http://www.pgepark.com/beavers/pressRoom.shtml

WELCOME BACK: In all, 12 of the players on the active roster played in Portland last season … and Kerry Robinson, who was signed on Monday morning.

Attention: Hyzdu. Your leash just got a lot shorter. Bochy’s favorite speedster this side of Rickey Henderson is back.

“Funkinstein”? Very nice. Yeah, several folks have pointed out Robinson’s presence on the Beavers. Think I’m still in a state of denial on that one…

Geoff, Jennings’ numbers against the Pads were greatly enhanced by his starts at Petco Park last year. He had two of his best outings of the season at the new yard, if I remember correctly.

Should be an interesting ballgame. Thank goodness for the day off, so the bullpens should be all fresh and ready to go.

Good call on Jennings at Coors, guys. In the ridiculously small sample of three starts against the Pads there last year, our boys hit .405/.442/.582 off him.

This evening’s commentary is brought to you by Newcastle Brown Ale. So, who’s in da house?

  6. Posted April 6, 2005 at 5:38 pm | Permalink

Is it really brought to us by Newcastle? It doesn’t look like there’s a lot of people at my blog so I’m hangin’ out here a bit…

It’s a good thing those fountains were turned off. Burroughs only bats .210 with fountains in the batters eye.

Well, *my* comments are brought to you by Newcastle. Feel free to choose your own beverage.

    11-pitch walk to Loretta. Nice.

Did you happen to read the CityBeat article that I linked to today? I can’t look at Giles the same way now. Just seeing him creeps me out a little bit.

My comments, brought to you by Dr Pepper.

  10. Posted April 6, 2005 at 5:46 pm | Permalink

Dr. Pepper is good. Yeah, I did read that. I’m hearin’ ya, but I’ll take a three-run jack in the first any day. That was sweet.

You going to the game tomorrow? We were able to get tickets when they released the extras on Tuesday.

  12. Posted April 6, 2005 at 5:51 pm | Permalink

Jennings is about to throw his 30th pitch of the first inning. Yeah, I’ll be there. I forget where. Story of my life, LOL.

Coors is to Helton the way steroids are to Bonds.

He’ll never really get credit the credit he deserves for his skills.

  14. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:02 pm | Permalink

Good call. Helton is a stud in any park.

Eaton’s fastball: 91-93 mph according to tv.

  15. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:03 pm | Permalink

Nice breaking ball gets Matt Holliday swinging to end the inning. Pads up 3-1 after one. So, will 10 runs be enough to win this one?

  16. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:07 pm | Permalink

I hope so. Whatever it takes for the Padres to escape Coors with some arms left in the bullpen.

  17. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:07 pm | Permalink

Nine-pitch at-bat to Khalil ends in an E5. Jennings has thrown 42 pitches and recorded 3 outs so far.

  18. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:09 pm | Permalink

Dustan Mohr on the DL after hurting his leg jumping over the dugout railing last night to celebrate the Rox’ walk-off homer on Monday? This is the same guy that crumpled in the visiting ‘pen at Petco last year. He probably shouldn’t play the Padres.

  19. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:13 pm | Permalink

Two innings, two hits for Burroughs. Pads are getting some really good at-bats against Jennings.

  20. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:14 pm | Permalink

They don’t work on jumping railing in spring training apparently.

Was he the one who stepped badly on the bullpen mound last season?

  21. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:17 pm | Permalink

Man, Giles is some kinda player.

  22. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:18 pm | Permalink

Two innings, five ribbies for Giles. His stroke is looking real good so far.

Lazy fly ball from Nevin to end the inning. Jennings has already thrown 60 pitches. Yummy.

  23. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:20 pm | Permalink

Yeah, that was Mohr. Guess we know what he’ll be working on next spring, eh?

Look at X making a nice pick out in center.

Quick inning here will really stick the Rockies on the ropes.

  25. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:24 pm | Permalink

That was a nice inning. Eaton’s up in the 94-96 mph range with his fastball now.

  26. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:26 pm | Permalink

Re-reading that CityBEAT article. Very entertaining.

  27. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:34 pm | Permalink

Someday soon, Nady and Khalil will be an awesome 1-2 punch in the heart of the lineup.

  28. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:37 pm | Permalink

    Jennings pitch count by inning:

    Inn: Pit
    1: 33
    2: 27
    3: 26

It’s fun to watch those two guys succeeding at the big-league level after seeing them at Elsinore back in 2002.

  30. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:44 pm | Permalink

Eaton strikes out the side in order. He’s not locating the breaking ball, but the fastball/changeup combo is working real well.

  31. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:48 pm | Permalink

Burroughs is 3 for 3. He ripped a sharp grounder up the middle. A couple pitches earlier he yanked one down the right field line that hooked foul. Good to see him turn on the inside pitch.

  32. Posted April 6, 2005 at 6:51 pm | Permalink

No runs for the Pads in the fourth, but Jennings is already at 102 pitches.

I’m off to poker night. You’re on your own. Good chatting with you. Enjoy the game tomorrow.

    Have fun, Dex.

Eaton isn’t able to go five. There appears to be some kind of physical problem. Tim Redding makes his Padre debut.

what made the appearance of a physical problem?

    Posted April 6, 2005 at 8:41 pm | Permalink

The announcers are saying a possible back problem… he started two pitches that he stopped mid-delivery before being pulled in the 5th.

I’m not sure why we brought in Redding, who got one out, using 6 pitches (5 strikes), and burned him on just that, but I guess Seanez’s success makes it a worthless question. I guess I would have just managed the bullpen a little looser, letting Redding go at least 4 outs, before the certain need to put in a pinch hitter arised.

Anyhow, it’s minor now, and probably won’t make a difference, even with a 7 game homestand on the horizon. But it looks like Eaton may have tweaked something. Let’s hope not, both of those pitches were balk’s with runners on… big time.

These comments courtsey of AleSmith’s ESB on tap from the kegerator.

    I don’t mess around. ;)

Trainer Jim Daniel came out; the tv guys speculated it was something to do with his ribs or back, possibly as the result of trying to field a hot smash back through the middle. I’ve been on the phone so I don’t know if they talked more about it but I’ll pass any info along I hear.

The Giles piece in CityBEAT is classic Giles family behavior. They’re the kind of people who will walk through their home naked when there’s company. His unathletic, untalented brother, Geoffrey, was about to be dragged off by security for heckling Brian and he had to explain that the idiot was his brother. They’re odd people.
