  1. funkinstein Says:

Jennings, like every other pitcher, struggles at Coors, posting a 6.00+ ERA there last season. He also saw a slight drop in night games vs. day games, but I doubt that will effect him.

Hopefully that air doesn’t mess with Eaton’s curve that he’s been working on, and I think our offense will take care of the rest.

The bad news, however, is this:

    http://www.pgepark.com/beavers/pressRoom.shtml

WELCOME BACK: In all, 12 of the players on the active roster played in Portland last season … and Kerry Robinson, who was signed on Monday morning.

Attention: Hyzdu. Your leash just got a lot shorter. Bochy’s favorite speedster this side of Rickey Henderson is back.

    Current score: 0
  2. Geoff Young Says:

“Funkinstein”? Very nice. Yeah, several folks have pointed out Robinson’s presence on the Beavers. Think I’m still in a state of denial on that one…

    Current score: 0
  3. Dan Lucero Says:

Geoff, Jennings’ numbers against the Pads were greatly enhanced by his starts at Petco Park last year. He had two of his best outings of the season at the new yard, if I remember correctly.

Should be an interesting ballgame. Thank goodness for the day off, so the bullpens should be all fresh and ready to go.

    Current score: 0
  4. Geoff Young Says:

Good call on Jennings at Coors, guys. In the ridiculously small sample of three starts against the Pads there last year, our boys hit .405/.442/.582 off him.

  5. Geoff Young Says:

This evening’s commentary is brought to you by Newcastle Brown Ale. So, who’s in da house?

    Current score: 0
  6. Dex Says:

Is it really brought to us by Newcastle? It doesn’t look like there’s a lot of people at my blog so I’m hangin’ out here a bit…

It’s a good thing those fountains were turned off. Burroughs only bats .210 with fountains in the batters eye.

    Current score: 0
  7. Geoff Young Says:

Well, *my* comments are brought to you by Newcastle. Feel free to choose your own beverage.

  8. Geoff Young Says:

    11-pitch walk to Loretta. Nice.

    Current score: 0
  9. Dex Says:

Did you happen to read the CityBeat article that I linked to today? I can’t look at Giles the same way now. Just seeing him creeps me out a little bit.

My comments, brought to you by Dr Pepper.

    Current score: 0
  10. Geoff Young Says:

Dr. Pepper is good. Yeah, I did read that. I’m hearin’ ya, but I’ll take a three-run jack in the first any day. That was sweet.

  11. Dex Says:

You going to the game tomorrow? We were able to get tickets when they released the extras on Tuesday.

    Current score: 0
  12. Geoff Young Says:

Jennings is about to throw his 30th pitch of the first inning. Yeah, I’ll be there. I forget where. Story of my life, LOL.

    Current score: 0
  13. Dex Says:

Coors is to Helton the way steroids are to Bonds.

He’ll never really get credit the credit he deserves for his skills.

    Current score: 0
  14. Geoff Young Says:

Good call. Helton is a stud in any park.

Eaton’s fastball: 91-93 mph according to tv.

    Current score: 0
  15. Geoff Young Says:

Nice breaking ball gets Matt Holliday swinging to end the inning. Pads up 3-1 after one. So, will 10 runs be enough to win this one?

    Current score: 0
  16. Dex Says:

I hope so. Whatever it takes for the Padres to escape Coors with some arms left in the bullpen.

    Current score: 0
  17. Geoff Young Says:

Nine-pitch at-bat to Khalil ends in an E5. Jennings has thrown 42 pitches and recorded 3 outs so far.

    Current score: 0
  18. Geoff Young Says:

Dustan Mohr on the DL after hurting his leg jumping over the dugout railing last night to celebrate the Rox’ walk-off homer on Monday? This is the same guy that crumpled in the visiting ‘pen at Petco last year. He probably shouldn’t play the Padres.

    Current score: 0
  19. Geoff Young Says:

Two innings, two hits for Burroughs. Pads are getting some really good at-bats against Jennings.

    Current score: 0
  20. Dex Says:

They don’t work on jumping railing in spring training apparently.

Was he the one who stepped badly on the bullpen mound last season?

    Current score: 0
  21. Dex Says:

Man, Giles is some kinda player.

    Current score: 0
  22. Geoff Young Says:

Two innings, five ribbies for Giles. His stroke is looking real good so far.

Lazy fly ball from Nevin to end the inning. Jennings has already thrown 60 pitches. Yummy.

    Current score: 0
  23. Geoff Young Says:

Yeah, that was Mohr. Guess we know what he’ll be working on next spring, eh?

Look at X making a nice pick out in center.

  24. Dex Says:

Quick inning here will really stick the Rockies on the ropes.

    Current score: 0
  25. Geoff Young Says:

That was a nice inning. Eaton’s up in the 94-96 mph range with his fastball now.

  26. Geoff Young Says:

Re-reading that CityBEAT article. Very entertaining.

    Current score: 0
  27. Dex Says:

Someday soon, Nady and Khalil will be an awesome 1-2 punch in the heart of the lineup.

    Current score: 0
  28. Geoff Young Says:

    Jennings pitch count by inning:

    Inn: Pit
    1: 33
    2: 27
    3: 26

    Current score: 0
  29. Geoff Young Says:

It’s fun to watch those two guys succeeding at the big-league level after seeing them at Elsinore back in 2002.

    Current score: 0
  30. Geoff Young Says:

Eaton strikes out the side in order. He’s not locating the breaking ball, but the fastball/changeup combo is working real well.

    Current score: 0
  31. Geoff Young Says:

Burroughs is 3 for 3. He ripped a sharp grounder up the middle. A couple pitches earlier he yanked one down the right field line that hooked foul. Good to see him turn on the inside pitch.

    Current score: 0
  32. Geoff Young Says:

No runs for the Pads in the fourth, but Jennings is already at 102 pitches.

    Current score: 0
  33. Dex Says:

I’m off to poker night. You’re on your own. Good chatting with you. Enjoy the game tomorrow.

    Current score: 0
  34. Geoff Young Says:

    Have fun, Dex.

Eaton isn’t able to go five. There appears to be some kind of physical problem. Tim Redding makes his Padre debut.

    Current score: 0
  35. Eric Says:

what made the appearance of a physical problem?

    Current score: 0
  36. funkorama Says:

The announcers are saying a possible back problem… he started two pitches that he stopped mid-delivery before being pulled in the 5th.

I’m not sure why we brought in Redding, who got one out, using 6 pitches (5 strikes), and burned him on just that, but I guess Seanez’s success makes it a worthless question. I guess I would have just managed the bullpen a little looser, letting Redding go at least 4 outs, before the certain need to put in a pinch hitter arised.

Anyhow, it’s minor now, and probably won’t make a difference, even with a 7 game homestand on the horizon. But it looks like Eaton may have tweaked something. Let’s hope not, both of those pitches were balk’s with runners on… big time.

These comments courtsey of AleSmith’s ESB on tap from the kegerator.

    I don’t mess around. ;)

  37. Geoff Young Says:

Trainer Jim Daniel came out; the tv guys speculated it was something to do with his ribs or back, possibly as the result of trying to field a hot smash back through the middle. I’ve been on the phone so I don’t know if they talked more about it but I’ll pass any info along I hear.

    Current score: 0
  38. Geoff Young Says:

    ESB on tap? Outstanding!

  39. Richard Says:

The Giles piece in CityBEAT is classic Giles family behavior. They’re the kind of people who will walk through their home naked when there’s company. His unathletic, untalented brother, Geoffrey, was about to be dragged off by security for heckling Brian and he had to explain that the idiot was his brother. They’re odd people.

looks like espn’s new Gamecast is trying to emulate CBSsportsline’s Gamecenter.

  9. Geoff Young Says:

Pads load the bases but don’t score. Kennedy should have struck out the side without a runner reaching base but the plate umpire Langstoned him on 3-2 pitch to Giles.

Williams falling behind in the count. Two batters, two doubles. 1-0 Rox. Ball one to Helton.

Ugh. Double, double, walk, homer. 4-0 Rox. I hate Coors Field.

To Langston - Nice verb. I’ll see that pitch on my deathbed.

For what it’s worth: The boys on the radio said that pitch to Giles wasn’t that close.

Also, Oliver Perez stunk in his Opening Day start.

  15. Geoff Young Says:

Brian, the boys on the radio missed it. That pitch was down the middle, just above the belt. Saw that about Perez. Also, what’s up with Dmitri Young?

Williams’ first inning: 35 pitches, 19 strikes, 1 walk, 1 single, 2 doubles, 1 homer, 4 runs. It can only get better, right?

  16. Geoff Young Says:

Ack. Burroughs pops weakly to short. That’s not the kind of swing you want to see on a 3-1 pitch.

  17. Eric Says:

what kind of swing was it?

Helton just missed one. Williams gets out of the second without damage, but he’s not fooling anybody.

  19. Brian G. Says:

You’re suggesting that Jerry Coleman and Ted Leitner missed a pitch?!?!

    Current score: 0
  20. Geoff Young Says:

Eric, it was very defensive. Burroughs dropped his elbow and tried to inside-out the pitch. It was the kind of swing you’d expect to see on an 0-2 or 1-2 pitch.

  21. Geoff Young Says:

Loretta ducksnort behind third base, first hit of the season.

Giles is up. They just showed “ball four” on replay. That’s a strike every time.

Giles home run. Laser shot just clears the right field fence. He was quick on that inside pitch.

Nevin home run to right center. Holy smokes!

  38. Eric Says:

I mean, how is it possible to hit a ball that dies after 3 inches, and then why would he touch it (on purpose? a whoopsie?)?

I think I’m misunderstanding. My guess now is that he hit a slow dribbler down the first base line (and that your 3 inches was an exaggeration)and Nevin nicked it with his bat as he started running toward first. From your brief description, I was picturing a ball that literally just stopped moving 3 inches from home plate, and Nevin looking at it for a second, walking toward it curiously, and examining it with his bat.

Ah the travails of following baseball exclusively through internet =/

    Current score: 0
  39. Richard Says:

He hit the ball straight down or something. It actually did die (it was still rolling slowly, but not forward) within six inches (I ballparked 3) of the plate. He then, seemingly intentionally, pushed it with his bat. It was very strange.

Some comments from a friend with a good baseball eye who was at Coors Field today …

It was a thriller. A couple observations… why was Williams your starter? He had nothing—it looked like BP. Also, Hoffman had less than nothing. His fastball was mid 80s at best, and he was bouncing his change-up 5’ in front of the plate. Plus, his release on his change was dramatically different visually than his fastball. I have to believe a hitter can pick that up pretty easily. I think the NL West is wide open, but I don’t think you guys can win it with Hoffman closing. Greene had a couple nice plays, and Nady was swinging the bat well. Your middle relievers looked pretty solid.
