first pitch: 11:20 a.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Jake Peavy vs Mark Prior

The matchup we’ve all been waiting for is here. Career numbers:

       Age IP P/GS H/9 HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 ERA
Peavy 24 465.1 96.0 8.30 1.10 3.29 8.30 3.48
Prior 24 446.2 107.1 7.92 0.87 2.74 10.70 3.08

Brian Giles is hitting .400/.538/.900 against Prior over 13 plate appearances. Current Cubs are hitting .167/.222/.292 against Peavy over 54 plate appearances. Jose Macias, of all people, has the lone homer.

And that one home run by Macias was in one of his TWO at-bats against Peav.

  2. Geoff Young Says:

If we’re lucky, Baker will stick Macias in the starting lineup based on those two at-bats. ;-)

    Damn you rain, damn you!

Game called … DH tomorrow … sigh.

Rained out on my day off. Now, I’m going to miss two games tomorrow. Fantastic.

  6. Geoff Young Says:

Geez, it must be pouring out there for them to call the game so quickly. Well, that was anticlimactic (although not necessarily anticlimatic)…

  7. Jonny German Says:

    San Diego walks: 46.

Baltimore + St. Louis + Tampa Bay + White Sox walks: 45.

  8. Richard Says:

Both the chicago.cubs.mlb.com & sandiego.padres.mlb.com show the next game’s pitching matchup as Lawrence v. Prior. Any ideas as to why?

    Current score: 0
  9. funkinstein Says:

Maybe they don’t want Prior throwing as late as possible, though a mere few hours shouldn’t make much difference. Perhaps they want it to be as warm as possible, to try and keep his arm from becomming stiff?

I dunno, but Wood / Peavy, while a good matchup, isn’t the one I was hoping for… Either way, I’m going to a long lunch tomorrow instead of today.

Is Lynn Henning of The Detroit News, the stupidest man alive? Not quite, but he’s campaigning for the title with gems like these:

Tomorrow’s games will be Peavy v. Wood & Lawrence v. Prior. It’s too bad.

In-Game Discussion: Padres @ Cubs

first pitch: 11:20 a.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Adam Eaton vs Ryan Dempster

Eaton and Dempster both attempt to bounce back from poor season debuts as the Padres head to the Windy City for a three-game series. Which reminds me, if you were a hot dog, and you were starving, would you eat yourself?

Middle of third, no score. Here’s ESPN GameCast if you want to follow along:

talk about killing your own opportunities.
3rd inning: Strike ‘em out throw ‘em out on a 3-2 pitch
    4th inning: missed bunt-n-run attempt
overall: 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

    Current score: 0
  3. Eric Says:

even when they score, the way they do is pathetic.

    Current score: 0
  4. Geoff Young Says:

I missed it. That bad, huh? Good to see six scoreless out of Eaton at least.

    Current score: 0
  5. Eric Says:

probably not that bad. I’m only cyber-watching. Maybe Dempster’s just having a good day.

    Current score: 0
  6. Eric Says:

apparently all the Cubs pitchers are having a good day.

    Current score: 0
  7. Geoff Young Says:

As long as ours have a better day. :-)

  8. LynchMob Says:

Classic formula for success: Starter goes 6 … Linebrink + Otsuka + Hoffman! Sweet …

Seems like Hoffy is the weak link in that formula … but it’s what we’ve got right now … and he made it work today!

    Current score: 0
  9. Eric Says:

But today, it was vintage Hoffy: 9 pitches, 3 outs, 1 K.

Otsuka, though not scored upon, has been shaky in all of his outings so far, no?.

    Current score: 0
  10. Geoff Young Says:

Hoffy will be fine. Aki’s been a bit unlucky in terms of stuff finding holes, but I do have concerns that last year’s workload might catch up to him.

Anyone see the game? I’m curious to know if Eaton looked as good as his line would indicate.

    Current score: 0
  11. Richard Says:

I only got to watch the first three innings, but Adam looked as good as his results would suggest.

    Current score: 0
  12. funkinstein Says:

I saw bits at the pizza joint by my office with a Stone Pale Ale.

Eaton looked just nasty. That curve has more bite to it than a double IPA (beer on the mind?). Dempster was pretty wild, and the Padres were swinging at some pretty bad pitches.

Tough travel schedule going into this game, hopefully the offense gives Peavy a little more tomorrow. As of now, our pitching is carrying us.

Sidenote: Post game guys said Ramon is asking for 4 years, $40 million. Not gonna happen.

re: starving hot dog. Depends, am I one of the new and improved grilled dogs at Petco or am I the stewed in the juices of a million others before me hot dog of Petco ‘04. If I’m the latter, I wouldn’t bother standing in line, even if starving, for my 5 bucks worth of nastiness. I’ve heard good things about the new ones, so I might be willing to eat the new version of me.

Of course, if I’m a Dodger dog, I’m all over it.

    Whew, too much coffee.
