Nothing has happened yet, but all indications are that life is about to get real interesting around these parts. With that in mind, here’s a little something to help you through as we move forward into the unknown…
Q: What the heck is going on with the Padres?
A: Principle owners John and Becky Moores have filed [...]

I had two revelations this past week:
Working full time and doing physical therapy (I’m re-learning how to walk, which apparently is a skill one is supposed to have mastered by age 40) is exhausting. It’s not realistic to assume that I’ll be able to make significant progress on the book during the week.
That’s a lame [...]

We’re looking back at our pre-season community projections. On Wednesday we covered the hitters; today we turn to the pitchers.
Left-Handers
Justin Hampson, 2008
IP
ERA
Projected
48
4.21
Actual
30.2
2.93
Our most optimistic projection had Hampson at a 3.50 ERA.
Joe Thatcher, 2008
IP
ERA
Projected
58
2.86
Actual
25.2
8.42
We missed this about as badly as we could. So did other people: CHONE had Thatcher’s ERA at 3.67, Marcels had it at [...]

My latest article at Hardball Times looks back at a 1989 game in which the Cleveland Indians collected six hits, all home runs. Joe Carter knocked three of them.
Carter, you may recall, came to San Diego the following year and gave a convincing demonstration of how utterly useless the RBI statistic is. Ten men in [...]
Before we get to the goods, one of our readers was at Monday’s Hall of Fame game (you know, the one between the Padres and Cubs that got rained out) and took some photos, as well as a video of Trevor Hoffman playing catch with one of his sons. Pretty cool…

What the heck, now is as good a time as any to revisit pre-season projections. I know, OPS and ERA aren’t the end-all and be-all, but they’re good enough for government work…

Nice job by Trevor Hoffman on Friday night. For those who remain unclear on the dangers of judging a man based on an eight-game sample, here’s a clue:

I’m pressed for time this morning, so links are offered with minimal commentary (and there was much rejoicing):
Alan Drooz at the U-T misses Mike Cameron (h/t PM).
Clay Hensley’s first rehab start went well (h/t Field39).
MB at Friar Forecast asks how we know when a player is done. Good question.
Amy Nelson at ESPN jumps on the [...]

Thanks to reader Lance for hooking us up with seats two rows behind the visitors dugout on Wednesday night. First time I’ve been anywhere near that close at Petco Park, and it’s a whole different experience. For a guy like me who lives in nosebleed, just, wow.
Also, belated welcome to all the folks at Gaslamp [...]
