Before I forget, friend of Ducksnorts Steve Poltz has released his latest CD, Traveling (as mentioned in our interviews with him), and it's a solid effort. If you think I'm saying that just because Steve gave Ducksnorts a shout-out at last week's in-store at Lou's, then you don't know me as well as I thought you did. Anyway, the CD is available through his site, so get it if the spirit moves you. Be sure to check out his blog while you're there -- fun stuff. On to the links. According to the U-T, Trevor Hoffman still ...

The Khalil Conundrum

Tuesday, January 22, 2008
by Geoff Young
Late last week talks broke down between the Padres and shortstop Khalil Greene. The Padres control Greene through 2009 but are interested in pursuing a long-term deal with him. According to the U-T, the club offered a 3- or 4-year deal (no money disclosed) without success, and the two sides now have exchanged salary arbitration figures. Quoth GM Kevin Towers: A long-term contract with Khalil at this time is probably doubtful. I don't know, it might not be able to get done. Khalil's family is on the East Coast and ...

More Spring Training Thoughts

Monday, January 7, 2008
by Geoff Young
We've got the spring training meetup poll going over there on the right. With very few precincts reporting, so far it looks like folks want to get together in the desert sooner (Feb 29 - Mar 2, or Mar 7 - 9) rather than later (Mar 14 - 16, or Mar 21 - 23). Typically I've gone toward the end, when big leaguers see most of the action, but it might be interesting to watch more of the kids for a change. Anyway, if you have any interest in attending spring training as a group, please participate in the poll and/or leave comments so we can start making plans. On a related note, I've been talking to my buddy with ...

Padres Lose Bradley to Rangers

by Geoff Young
Milton Bradley is gone. On Thursday, the Padres were optimistic that they'd retain his services, but now it appears that the Texas Rangers have swooped in and grabbed him. Because the Padres didn't offer Bradley arbitration, they won't receive a compensatory draft pick. (We didn't re-sign Bradley, and all we got was this lousy T-shirt.) Congrats to the Rangers, who have made the bargain signing of the winter. Bradley comes with considerable baggage, but he is a difference maker in the lineup, the likes of which the Padres hadn't seen since the days of Ken Caminiti, Tony Gwynn, and Greg Vaughn in '96, '97, and '98, respectively. Here's hoping for better news on the Kosuke Fukudome ...

Padres April Wrap

Why even bother with an official scorer? Xavier Nady hits a lazy fly ball to center in the 10th on Friday night that Ricky Ledee loses in the lights; ball clanks off Ledee's glove and it's ruled a hit. Then Saturday night, Mike Lieberthal hits a ducksnort to right that Nady has to run a mile to get to and he just misses making a terrific play. E-9. I guarantee that if this series had been played in Philly, Nady would have one less hit and one less error next to his name right now. Speaking of Nady, I ran into him and Sean Burroughs on the trolley back from the stadium Sunday evening. Yep, that's right, they take the trolley to work. Cool, huh? We'll finish ...
