The Giles Non-Story

I haven't commented on the Brian Giles waiver thing because, frankly, nothing happened. That said, because the Red Sox were involved, people are making a big stink, so here's my two cents. First off, pretty much everyone gets placed on waivers this time of year. That's not a news item. Second, I'm hearing a lot of nonsense about Giles' desire to win or whatever. I understand that the Boston media maybe feels a little jilted by his decision to remain in San Diego, but seriously, get over yourself. This is choice: Giles is a player who talks a lot about winning, but if that's the ...

IGD: Padres @ Mets (7 Aug 08)

Padres @ Mets 9:10 a.m. PT DIRECTV 722 (Mets feed) AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 187 MLB, B-R Morning baseball. Huzzah. * * * Meanwhile, my latest article is up at Hardball Times: Remembering the 1983 Lynchburg Mets. Relevance? Well, the Padres are playing the Mets. Also, a few of the guys on that team have San Diego ties: right-hander Calvin Schiraldi spent some time with the Friars, outfielder Darryl Denby attended Lincoln High, and first baseman Randy Milligan attended Mesa College. So there.

Breakin’ for All-Stars

Monday, July 14, 2008
by Geoff Young
Regular readers know that I don't do the All-Star Game. Adrian Gonzalez pretty well sums up why: All it is is a reminder of the market we're in. When it comes to voting for the All-Star Game, it's all about publicity, all about what market you play for. It's how ESPN puts you out there. They're a big reason for who gets publicity and who doesn't. As I've said before, San Diego is not ESPN's target audience -- and for good reason. New York, Boston, and a few other markets pay the bills, so it only makes sense that players from teams representing those cities should dominate the rosters. I don't have a real problem with that, ...

Me, the Highway, and Life

Okay, here's the deal. I'm driving up to Oregon this week to visit family and catch a couple of minor-league games. I don't know what my availability will be like while I'm off yonder, so posting will be real light this week. I will try to pop in every now and then with reports, pix, and/or videos from the road, but I can't make any promises. At the very least, we'll have the IGDs up and running every day -- assuming anyone is still interested in talking about the games at this point. ;-) When I return to San Diego, it will be to a full-time office gig. Yeah, it's about the money. My family and I miss it. Also, if I've learned anything from writing ...

First Padre Blogger Summit

Saturday, May 24, 2008
by Geoff Young
Well, "summit" might be a slight exaggeration, although we were sitting pretty high up in the right-field bleachers. Regardless, on Thursday, a few of us got together for drinks and a ballgame. Attendees included Jason from Padres Revolution (aka sdpadrefan.com), Rich from San Diego Spotlight, Melvin Nieves from Sacrifice Bunt, and yours truly. We started off at The Field for boxty and beer (Boddington's on tap, mmm...), then wandered over to the park just in time to hear the reaction to Ken Griffey Jr.'s 598th career home run. We sat in Section 233, which is actually part of Riverside County, and had a ...

Padres (5-5) @ Dodgers (4-5) Jake Peavy vs Brad Penny 7:40 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 185 MLB, B-R Jake dominated the Dodgers last weekend in San Diego. Perhaps more importantly, he seems to have gotten into their heads with Smudgegate. Here's hoping he can work that to his advantage.

Storm Retire Peavy’s Number

Friday, April 4, 2008

After watching the Padres defeat Houston at Petco on Thursday afternoon (thanks to reader Lance for hooking us up with tickets), Mrs. Ducksnorts and I drove to Lake Elsinore to see the Storm's opener for 2008. Before the game, the Storm retired Jake Peavy's number 22. Peavy was presented with a key to the city; had April 3, 2008, proclaimed Jake Peavy day; and got to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Future Hall of Famers Greg Maddux and Trevor Hoffman offered video congratulations, as did Darren Balsley and Craig Colbert, both of whom worked with Peavy at Elsinore and work with him now in San ...
