No game on Thursday. Hey, the Padres can't lose. ;-) Meanwhile, I've been working on a few other things: John at MadFriars asked me a few questions about the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual. I'll also be pimping the Annual on Bases Loaded with Elliott Price. Elliott is the former long-time play-by-play voice of the Montreal Expos. This is scheduled to air at 11 a.m. PT. My latest article at Hardball Times examines the belief that Trevor Hoffman struggles in non-save situations. I'm leaving Knuckle Curve to join the staff at Baseball Digest Daily. I've been ...

I'm all over the place today: How to Quit Your Job and Write a Book (Or Two) (BallHype). I posted this in the comments on Wednesday, but here's a little "behind-the-scenes" look at the process of writing the Ducksnorts Baseball Annuals. Arizona Dreaming (Baseball Digest Daily). In spring training, what happens before the game is at least as interesting as what happens during the game. Where Are They Now: Top Prospects of '98, #41-50 (Knuckle Curve). The latest installment in my look back at the top young players from a ...

Peoria on My Mind

Thursday, March 6, 2008
by Geoff Young
I'm scrambling to get ready for Peoria, so I need to direct you elsewhere today. I'm thinking about fun story lines for '08 at Hardball Times and the Top 100 prospects from '98 at Knuckle Curve. Also, reader LynchMob has taken some short videos from actual spring training games. Sweet! Lessee, what else have I got? Okay, here's a question for you: Who will be the biggest surprise among this year's Padres? Positive, negative, whatever. Give me a name and a reason. Or talk about whatever else is on your mind. Be excellent...

Uh-oh, another post full of bullet points. I am so jonesing for actual games... I'm seriously stuck in the past. The latest installment in my re-examination of the top prospects of '98 is up at Knuckle Curve. Padres relevance? Rafael Medina checks in at #72, Ramon Hernandez at #74. Turning the clock back another decade, I've written a brief retrospective of the 1988 Pacific Coast League over at Hardball Times. Padres everywhere in this one: Sandy Alomar Jr., Greg Harris, Jerald Clark, Ken Caminiti, Shane Mack, Gary Lucas, Bruce Bochy, Darrel Akerfelds, Kevin Towers. Fun stuff. Ben B. points us to a ...

Food safety tip: "carpaccio" is Italian for "sashimi," which is Japanese for "it ain't cooked." Just so you know. Super quick links today. You provide the commentary... It's spring: Brew yourself a piping hot pot of optimism Tom Krasovic identifies five story lines to watch in Peoria (h/t LynchMob) MadFriars.com talks to Corey Brock (h/t LynchMob) Corey reports that Josh Bard has signed, avoiding arbitration Tony Clark ...

Before I forget, friend of Ducksnorts Steve Poltz has released his latest CD, Traveling (as mentioned in our interviews with him), and it's a solid effort. If you think I'm saying that just because Steve gave Ducksnorts a shout-out at last week's in-store at Lou's, then you don't know me as well as I thought you did. Anyway, the CD is available through his site, so get it if the spirit moves you. Be sure to check out his blog while you're there -- fun stuff. On to the links. According to the U-T, Trevor Hoffman still ...

Friday Links (18 Jan 08)

Listening to Jeff Buckley, Live at Olympia (thanks, Didi!). That and a pot of coffee should keep me going for a while. To the links (sit down, we've got a few)... This is old, but it bears mentioning. Mike Cameron has signed with the Brewers (hat tip to Marsh in the comments). As I mentioned at Knuckle Curve, I think Cameron and his camp badly misread the market. I've heard some sentiment that the Padres should have signed him at the price (1 year, $7M) that Milwaukee ended up paying him, but I doubt that this option was available before the Jim Edmonds trade. Great pickup for ...
