This whole Allan Dykstra thing has me a bit puzzled. I’m glad that the Padres are investigating whether Dykstra’s pre-existing medical condition might cause further problems, but I wonder why this is becoming an issue during contract negotiations. Maybe before drafting him would have been a better time to resolve any lingering concerns?
With the injury to last year’s first-rounder, Nick Schmidt, you’d think the Padres would want to err on the side of extreme caution. I guess they are, but the timing seems a little strange. Here’s hoping it all works out okay.
Triple-A — Portland 5, Colorado Springs 4
Matt Antonelli: 2-for-5, 2B
Luis Rodriguez: 0-for-3, BB, SH
Chip Ambres: 1-for-4

Dirk Hayhurst: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 0 BB, 3 SO
Welcome to the Nick Hundley show. His two-run homer in the ninth tied the game, and his single to center the next inning won it… That’s Hensley’s second straight six-inning stint. Whenever anyone decides they’ve seen enough of Cha Seung Baek is okay by me.
Double-A — San Antonio 8, Northwest Arkansas 0
Drew Macias: 2-for-4, BB
Chad Huffman: 0-for-3, BB, HBP
Craig Cooper: 0-for-4, BB
Colt Morton: 2-for-4, HR

Paul Abraham: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 0 BB, 1 SO (7 pitches, 7 strikes)
Mauro Zarate: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 0 BB, 2 SO
I’m not sure why Garrison left the game early.

I was at that game last night, when Nick hit that dinger we all knew it from the sound it made off the bat – and so did he. And for him to be able to come through the next inning was even sweeter.
I think I am developing a serious man crush on Jaff Decker.
The way the Dykstra thing is playing out makes me wonder about the Stauffer pick in 2003. The Padres claimed they didn’t know about the shoulder injury before they drafted him, but the existence of the injury saved the Padres around $2m. Now they drafted another “injured” player even though there is no reason they didn’t know about the injury beforehand. No matter what Dykstra’s leverage is weakened now, I wonder if that was the reason for the pick (since the pick certainly wasn’t the logical one). On one level it sort of makes sense — save $1m here to spend $1m on a Dominican player.
#2@KRS1: You are not alone.
#3@Schlom: I suspected it might make you wonder that.
