Padres Farm Report (2 Jun 08)

Right-hander Mark Prior is scheduled to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. Bummer, but given his injury history, this was a likely outcome. Here’s hoping he can find health and resume his career at some point.

With the amateur draft looming, I’m thinking back to when the Twins took Joe Mauer #1 overall in 2001. Remember the fuss made because they snagged him ahead of Prior that year? Sometimes the “signability” pick turns out to be the better pick. Not always, of course, or even most of the time, but sometimes…

No real news on the Mat Latos front…

Draft Watch: Ike Davis

Ike Davis, 1B/OF, Arizona State U.

pre-draft rankings:

Davis, the son of former big-league reliever Ron Davis, draws praise for his raw power and defensive abilities. Primarily a first baseman in college, Davis is viewed as a potential right fielder because of his overall athleticism and a strong arm.

  1. Hi Geoff,

still reading your blog. Have to say that I really like your writings concerning the draft. It’s nice to get some “insight” to this whole proces because it’s something I’m not familiar with. Here in Europe we don’t have anything even remotely like it.

Anyways is it possible you also put the Cashner link in the Ike Davis post? I’m not trying to be a wisenose or anything just thought I’d mention it.

    greetings
    Arne

  2. #1@Arne: Ah, good catch. I’ve fixed the link — thanks so much!

  3. Reason for encouragement ? Last year the Beavers were not really competitive. The Portland Beavers, having been red hot for about 1 month, are 29-26 and in 2nd place.

Overall, Josh Geer has done reasonably well in a hitters league and newly returned Vince Sinisi is making his presence felt.

  4. Seems worth reposting the link to DePo’s blog …

Nothing new since Friday’s post about the draft …

  5. We need to keep a watch on the next time Antonelli actually hits a ball

  6. I like Ike … seems very unlikely he’s available at #23 … if he’s available and the Padres pass, I’ll be bum’d …

  7. #3@JP: .333/.375 isn’t exactly a positive “presence” from a right fielder. It’s only been 18 PA, though, so it’s not like that matters.
