Draft Watch: Casey Kelly
I’m looking at players who might be available when the Padres make their first pick at #23 and who I think would be a good fit. My draft philosophy doesn’t necessarily align with that of the Padres, so you may see players here that they aren’t targeting.
I’d like to see the club aggressively pursue middle infielders, guys with on-base skills, and power arms. But I’m not the one spending money to sign these players, nor is my head on the proverbial block if things go wrong, so it’s easy for me to make such pronouncements.
That said, here’s another guy on my list…

Kelly, son of former big-league infielder Pat Kelly, is a tremendous athlete who is committed to play quarterback at Tennessee. (The Padres failed to sign the last one of those they drafted — Todd Helton — and he turned out to be a pretty good player.) There is some question about how much Kelly will hit. Some scouts like him better as a pitcher (although he reportedly prefers shortstop), and there are signability concerns.

#3@Steve C: Sorry I read the question wrong - I meant to write they we will see Chase Headley at that date.
Hensley looked good when I saw him in Portland before he had a minor setback. The fact that he started the other day, as opposed to coming out of the pen, may indicate that they want him to be a starter as opposed to earlier where they saw him as a bullpen guy when he was rehabbing in Portland in late April.

hmmm I was hoping they would have him come out of the pen this year and move to a starting roll in 09.

Might as well stretch Hensley out in case they get good offers for Wolf, Maddux, and/or Estes.
Hensley was pretty lucky to have the ERA and ER+ he did in 2005 and 2006. Even out of the pen his K rate was pedestrian. He’s got better stuff than Germano, but he also walks a lot more hitters. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was a 1.5 season wonder, even if he hadn’t injured the worst part of the body for a pitcher to injure.

Is Kulbacki still hurt? He’s done absolutely nothing this season so far (sub 200 averages at Fort Wayne and now at Lake Elsinore). It’s probably too early to label him a bust but it’s not looking good.
