Padres Farm Report (30 Apr 08)

Triple-APortland 5, Oklahoma 4

Matt Antonelli: 0-for-3, BB
Jody Gerut (CF/RF): 3-for-4
Chase Headley: 0-for-2 (pulled after three innings, no explanation given)
Chip Ambres (CF): 1-for-1, HR, BB (didn’t start)
Brian Myrow: 1-for-3, BB
Edgar Gonzalez (RF/LF): 2-for-4, BB
Will Venable (DH): 0-for-4
Nick Hundley: 1-for-3
Craig Stansberry: 0-for-3
Cesar Ramos: 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 HR, 3 BB, 2 SO (85 pitches, 44 strikes)
Dirk Hayhurst: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 1 BB, 3 SO

Ugly line from Ramos. Also, the Padres lost Oscar Robles on waivers to Philadelphia. Luis Rodriguez is on the disabled list, which means that Marshall “Not a Shortstop” McDougall got the start on Tuesday. Robles isn’t great, but he’s a passable big-league shortstop. Some teams might not be so cavalier about losing a guy like that… Hayhurst notched his first save of the year and is in danger of losing his “non-prospect” status. ;-)

Double-AFrisco 11, San Antonio 9

Drew Macias: 2-for-2, 2B, 4 BB, SB
Chad Huffman: 1-for-5, BB
Kyle Blanks: 2-for-5, 2B, BB, E
Craig Cooper: 3-for-4, BB
Jose Lobaton: 0-for-5
Mike Ekstrom: 3 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 0 HR, 1 BB, 3 SO, WP

The Missions drew 11 walks and didn’t win. Yep, they must be a Padres farm club.

High-ALake Elsinore 4, Inland Empire 2

Cedric Hunter: 0-for-4, BB
Eric Sogard (DH): 1-for-4, 2B, BB
Rayner Contreras: 1-for-3, BB

Inland Empire. Why can’t they just call it San Bernardino like the rest of us do? Sogard hit another double. It’s gotten to the point where that’s no longer newsworthy. When in doubt, assume he hit one.

Low-AFort Wayne 2, Kane County 0 (1st game); Kane County 1, Fort Wayne 0 (2nd game)

Luis Durango: 3-for-6, 2B, 2 SB
Kellen Kulbacki: 0-for-5, BB
Justin Baum: 0-for-4 (didn’t start 2nd game)
Yefri Carvajal: 1-for-5
Andrew Cumberland (SS): 0-for-3
Felix Carrasco: 0-for-2
Geoff Vandel: 4.1 IP, 4, 0 R, 0 HR, 2 BB, 4 SO, HBP
Mat Latos: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 3 BB, 0 SO

  1. I was at the game tonight in Philly… not only is the playing field small, but the ball seems to carry and maintain speed much better than at Petco.

Hairston looked great at the plate and in CF (there were 3 balls he caught I’m fairly sure Edmonds does not), but Giles seemed to be getting poor jumps on the ball. Huber took a lot of abuse out in LF from the fans, they even got a “Hu-ber’s mom” chant to catch.

The Pads also seemed to use a heavy infield shift for Howard and some others, but I don’t remember them making any outs from it, and it cost us at least 1 run.. It sure was funny trying to see Kouz turn the double play from second base though.

It was also Dollar Dog Night, and those Philly fans can eat.. Some dude near us had at least 8 by himself. The fans also seemed to respect Iguichi for his time there last year.

Finally, the most frustrating thing for me was watching Bud Black put in Glendon Rusch to face Utley (R), Howard (L), and Burrell (R) when they were only down 1 in the 8th. Talk about giving up…

  2. Sogard sure does have a BABIP over .450 despite a LD% of 18%. His BABIP is only about .150 higher than his xBABIP. He might not be able to keep that up. His OBP might fall below .500 then. heh

He sure has shown a lot of improvement, though. His LD% is up, his BB% is up, his K% is down, his ISOP is up, his GB% is down. Is this just sample size? Is he doing something different? Was last year a down year for him? Anyone know anything about Sogard they can share?

  3. #2@Richard Wade: I’ve seen Sogard two or three times, and he hits everything hard. The last time I saw him, dude went 4-for-5, and the out was a drive to the warning track in dead center. I can’t find it, but someone the other day compared him to Todd Walker

  4. April 29th was the day the Padres had to wait for so Headley won’t accumulate a full year of service time in 08. Maybe he was pulled early so he can catch a plane to Philly!

  5. #4@osidepadre: Headley was thrown out of the game for arguing a strike three call. Gerut has really picked it up. Beaver pitcher Mike Adams has me somewhat intrigued as he has big league experience and throws hard.

  6. #5@JP: Thanks for the update on Headley. As for Adams, maybe his second stint in the organization will go a little better than his first:

  7. Gerut is on fire (13-for-22 in his last 7 games with 3 HR and 8 RBI’s). How about bringing that guy up? It definitely wouldn’t hurt. And why not give someone like Adams, Hayhurst, or Jared Wells a chance in the bullpen? They can’t be any worse than what the Padres are throwing out there right now. Kevin Cameron and Joe Thatcher probably need more time in AAA.

  8. Hey Lynch/Rain Delay have you guys seen Gerut play CF for the Breavers? Does he look like a plausible replaqcement for edmonds?

Man I need to get up to LE before they move Sogard to AA.

  9. Seriously! I had tickets two Sundays ago but decided not to go in favor of playing some home run derby at MCC with my roommates. You better go before I do though, the last time I went to a game at The Diamond it was the night Antonelli and Huffman were promoted right after the game.

  10. #8@Steve C: RD will have seen him more than me … but I did see him out there a couple of times during ST and 1 game @ Portland … no plays that would tell me much … so the small sample of data I have says Hairston is the best CF option right now … with Giles and McAnulty and Huber and Gerut and Ambres being fine for the corners …

  11. #1 Brett, I wish we had dollar dog night.
I seem to remember Iguchi having some key hits down the stretch for the Phillies last year. They even had a roll call chant for him. I also thought it was pretty classy that Maddux was applauded by the fans last night.

  12. LeBlanc just gave up first inning bomb to Nate Gold to push his ERA to about 7 1/2, Beav’s down 3-0.

  13. LeBlanc looks more like Heath Murray than anyone else right now…..he sure walks a lot of batters as well as serving up the meat.

  14. LeBlanc just served up another blast to the light hitting Kevin Richardson . 6 runs given up in 2/3rds of an inning.
