Reality: You’re Soaking in It

Where do I even begin? That this isn't the way I'd wanted to see the season end seems so beyond doubt that it hardly bears mentioning, and yet I just mentioned it. Even though a thing is obvious, it still needs a voice. I hate writing this. I hate thinking this. Honestly? I hate everything about this. But you can't go through life hating, right? Well, you can, but it's probably not a good idea. Besides, it's just baseball. "Just baseball." I hate that, too. Like that somehow negates it all, makes the experience less important, less real. Yeah, buddy, screw you. Anyway. Now you see the problem. I can't even get started. Do I whine about Monday night's outcome (...

Hey, I Can See First Place from Here

Fun win Tuesday night (box score). They're all fun, though, aren't they? Justin Germano wasn't brilliant, but he didn't have to be because the offense came through against defending Cy Young award winner Brandon Webb. Geoff at Ballhype Elsewhere in reality, I've started writing for Ballhype. My first article -- "Barry Zito Is the New Mike Hampton" -- is available for you perusal. Check it out when you have a moment, and "hype it up" if you deem it worthy. (You can "hype up" Ducksnorts articles, too, using that little doohickey at the end of each post. Not that I'm begging, but okay, I'm begging. Anyway... Again. Germano just had to keep the Padres in the game, ...

It’s Not You, It’s Me

There's too much blame to go around for Tuesday night's loss (box score) to focus on any one person or play. I should talk about it, but I'm not sure where to start. Perhaps more troubling, the general negativity toward this team among "average fans" is starting to wear on me. It causes me to wonder things I shouldn't wonder, like whether this city deserves a championship. It is sucking a lot of fun out of the sport, which is just bizarre. I can't remember a time when I haven't thoroughly enjoyed baseball. Anyway, I'll get over it. If you want to know why I don't have more ...

Road Trip to Cooperstown: Oklahoma City to Knoxville

Two guys have been adrift at sea in a small boat for several days. One looks concerned. "What's wrong," asks the other, "did we spring a leak?" "No, it's just that..." "What? What is it?" "Well, I thought the ocean would be larger." * * * I couldn't get to Knoxville in time for the Smokies game. I have only myself to blame, and I'm okay with that. When it's Trevor Hoffman's turn to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, I'll spread the trip over more days. Either that, or I'll pop open a cold beverage, plant my lily white ass on the couch, and watch on television like sane people do. I'm well beyond exhausted, and food has lost its appeal, but one moment on Wednesday brought a huge smile ...

Blum, Bocachica, and a Slice of History

Eight series wins in a row? Really, I had no idea. Greg Maddux brought his A-game on Wednesday night (recap | boxscore), and Geoff Blum and Hiram Bocachica led the offense en route to a --- Say what? Blum and Boca-who-ca? Yep. Blum drove in four runs on the evening, doubling his season total. All four came batting right handed. That's four more than he collected from the right side in 2006. I diss him because I love him. You know, anything I can do to help and all that. Or whatever. I have no explanation for Bocachica. His name is fun to say, and he ...

I can't even begin to tell you how glad I am the Padres came back to win Thursday night. I'm not sure how much enthusiasm I could've faked if they'd lost to Shawn Chacon. Nice to see Khalil Greene render the umpires' confusion regarding Josh Bard's 11th inning "double" irrelevant by driving home pinch-runner Rob Bowen from third. Milestones? Mike Cameron knocked his 200th big-league homer (to win the game, no less), Trevor Hoffman nailed down save #498. And Bud Black's ejection was his first as a player, coach, or manager. He's now ...
