Friday Links (12 Sep 08)

That was a fun one Thursday night, eh? I'd make a crack about how it's only the Giants, but seeing as how we have virtually no chance of overtaking them for fourth place, that hardly seems appropriate. Seriously, though, it's cool to see a bunch of these kids that I watched at Elsinore come up here and have some success. Matt Antonelli knocked three hits and drew a walk (and only a fine play by Omar Vizquel kept him from reaching base a fifth time), Drew Macias collected his first big-league hit (a homer off Matt Cain, no less), and Josh Geer tossed a gem. Meanwhile, we've got ...

(Okay, and maybe I'm still feeling a little sheepish about ranking Jake Gautreau ahead of Jason Bay once upon a time.) Other people like reading prospect lists, though, and I'm not prepared to be a curmudgeon without good cause, so what the hey. My general approach is to balance upside with proximity to the big leagues as best I can, then hope I get lucky. I've seen six of my picks play in person, including four of my top five. For those guys, my evaluations include their statistical record, second-hand reports I've read, ...

Review the Preview: Pitchers

Monday, October 8, 2007
by Geoff Young
We're looking back at my preseason predictions for the Padres. Last week we examined the hitters; today we turn our attention to the moundsmen... Unfortunately I cannot find anything in the statistical record to support this. What I did notice is that the GB% (percentage of balls in play that resulted in ground balls) against Peavy jumped from 38% in ...
