Uh-oh, another post full of bullet points. I am so jonesing for actual games... I'm seriously stuck in the past. The latest installment in my re-examination of the top prospects of '98 is up at Knuckle Curve. Padres relevance? Rafael Medina checks in at #72, Ramon Hernandez at #74. Turning the clock back another decade, I've written a brief retrospective of the 1988 Pacific Coast League over at Hardball Times. Padres everywhere in this one: Sandy Alomar Jr., Greg Harris, Jerald Clark, Ken Caminiti, Shane Mack, Gary Lucas, Bruce Bochy, Darrel Akerfelds, Kevin Towers. Fun stuff. Ben B. points us to a ...

Jason Kendall: Another Story That Won’t Die

About halfway down the page of a recent Baseball Prospectus chat with Chris Kahrl there is an item that caught my attention. Okay, it caught Charlie Wilmoth's attention and Charlie's comment caught mine. The question has to do with Sean Burroughs and whether he might be a candidate for a deal to the Pirates for, say, Jason Kendall. It's an idea that certainly should hold considerable appeal for Bucs fans. Unfortunately, for a trade to work, unless there is someone asleep at the wheel, it helps if it benefits (or at least gives the appearance of benefiting) both parties. Here's a quick look at Kendall and San Diego's current catcher, Ramon Hernandez: ...

Hadn't planned to be away from the blog for so long this time. I started to scratch something together the other day when the Giants went out and picked up A.J. Pierzynski, because I figured that move might impact the Padres. And it did. When last we met, I mentioned that I expected Kevin Towers to grab one of Pierzynski or Ramon Hernandez to be his catcher in 2004. When the Twins-Giants trade went down, I suspected it was only a matter of time before the rumored Hernandez for Mark Kotsay deal would happen. Now that it (apparently) has happened, what do I think of the trade? That's a complex question. I'll start by ...

Trade for Catcher in the Works?

Clearing off the ol' desk real quick. Enjoy... A reader alerted me to these two articles over at Prospectus where Jonah Keri interviews Padre GM Kevin Towers. As usual, Towers is pretty candid and it's a good read. The reader who sent this also noted, "He [Towers] says he's working on a trade for a catcher with 3 of the 8 playoff clubs, 2 AL and one NL. Any thoughts on who it might be?" Thoughts, me? Yeah, I've got a few. The only starting catchers on the eight playoff clubs who aren't eligible to file for free agency at the end of the season are Damian Miller, A.J. Pierzynski, Jorge Posada, Jason Varitek, and Ramon Hernandez. There are also some guys ...
