Friday Links (29 Jan 10)

Don’t waste your links or links will waste you…

The nickname game: all nicknames all the time (Hardball Times). I don’t recall ever hearing Mike Cameron referred to as “The Black Cat” in his two years with the Padres. I still have a soft spot for two other ex-Padres, Milton “Jenga” Bradley and Kevin “Mashin’ Macedonian” [...]

Once Upon My Mind: Jeff Weaver, Johan Santana, Corey Patterson, Milton Bradley, Jayson Werth

Myron at Friar Forecast is looking back at old Padres drafts, and in his first installment, he covers 2000 (Mark Phillips, Xavier Nady, Mewelde Moore…). I thought it might be fun to see what I’d said about those players back in the day; unfortunately, much of that stuff didn’t make it over from the old [...]

Is Life Ever Good Enough?

I use baseball to mark the passage of time. The memory of specific events helps keep me grounded in a world that often makes less sense than I’d like it to make (forgive the fact that I grew up rooting for the Dodgers):

1981 — Fernandomania; Rick Monday’s homer off Steve Rogers in Montreal
1988 — Kirk [...]

To Sweep and To Be Swept

Sunlight glimmers off the bay like sweat, like flashbulbs, a disco ball, coins from a slot machine, dice rolling, neon signs. Patterns of light moving impossibly fast, not moving at all. Stare long enough, it all becomes one. Time and meaning are lost, like the days themselves, swept out to sea.
The Padres had Monday off. [...]

Chatting with Sandy Alderson (Part 2)

This is the second of a three-part interview (Part 1 is here) with San Diego Padres CEO Sandy Alderson. Big thanks to Mr. Alderson for taking time out of his busy schedule to make himself available, and also to his assistant, Dayle Tedrow, for her indispensable assistance in making this happen.

IGD: Padres @ Phillies (29 Apr 08)

Padres (10-16) @ Phillies (14-12)
Greg Maddux vs Cole Hamels
4:05 p.m. PT
Channel 4SD
AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 185
MLB, B-R
Last time Maddux faced the Phillies, he beat his old (and I do mean old) teammate, Jamie Moyer, 14-3 at Citizens Bank Park last August. Milton Bradley knocked two homers, drove in six, and told the fans in [...]

Padres Lose Bradley to Rangers

Milton Bradley is gone. On Thursday, the Padres were optimistic that they’d retain his services, but now it appears that the Texas Rangers have swooped in and grabbed him.
Because the Padres didn’t offer Bradley arbitration, they won’t receive a compensatory draft pick. (We didn’t re-sign Bradley, and all we got was this lousy T-shirt.)
Congrats to [...]

Friday Links (7 Dec 07)

Lots o’ links today…

Padres set to bring back Bradley (Padres.com). The deal reportedly would be 1 year, $3.5-4 million. Or, as I like to call it, a bargain. This is still in the works (as are some other possibilities), so keep your fingers crossed.
Padres have quiet time at Meetings (Padres.com). Even assuming Milton Bradley signs, [...]

DePo, Theo, Hoffo, and Zeppo

First off, if you haven’t checked out our look back at second base in 2005 be sure to do so. We’re trying to figure out possible comps for Josh Barfield, and right now our best guess is Toronto’s Orlando Hudson.
Okay, on to the meaty stuff.
Dodgers Fire Paul DePodesta
Yeah, I’m on top of this one. Hey, [...]

In Search of the Five-Tool Prospect

In baseball circles, we often hear about the “five-tool prospect.” The traditional five tools judged by scouts in evaluating a player are the ability to hit, power, speed, fielding skill, and throwing arm. Symobolically, if we think of each of these tools as points on a star, then a player who possesses all five tools [...]
