Chatting with Sandy Alderson (Part 2)

Tuesday, June 17, 2008
by Geoff Young
This is the second of a three-part interview (Part 1 is here) with San Diego Padres CEO Sandy Alderson. Big thanks to Mr. Alderson for taking time out of his busy schedule to make himself available, and also to his assistant, Dayle Tedrow, for her indispensable assistance in making this happen. Ducksnorts: What exactly are the daily responsibilities of your current position, and is there an off-season for you? Alderson: No, there's really not an off-season. During the season we have a game virtually every day... so there are always things going on. My job during the season is to oversee day-to-day activity and be responsive to people who need some direction, and provide a public face for the team and be able to deal with ...

Padres (10-16) @ Phillies (14-12) Greg Maddux vs Cole Hamels 4:05 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 185 MLB, B-R Last time Maddux faced the Phillies, he beat his old (and I do mean old) teammate, Jamie Moyer, 14-3 at Citizens Bank Park last August. Milton Bradley knocked two homers, drove in six, and told the fans in Philly, "I am that good." He didn't stay in San Diego long, but Bradley is one of my all-time favorite Padres. ...

Padres Lose Bradley to Rangers

Sunday, December 9, 2007
by Geoff Young
Milton Bradley is gone. On Thursday, the Padres were optimistic that they'd retain his services, but now it appears that the Texas Rangers have swooped in and grabbed him. Because the Padres didn't offer Bradley arbitration, they won't receive a compensatory draft pick. (We didn't re-sign Bradley, and all we got was this lousy T-shirt.) Congrats to the Rangers, who have made the bargain signing of the winter. Bradley comes with considerable baggage, but he is a difference maker in the lineup, the likes of which the Padres hadn't seen since the days of Ken Caminiti, Tony Gwynn, and Greg Vaughn in '96, '97, and '98, respectively. Here's hoping for better news on the Kosuke Fukudome ...

Friday Links (7 Dec 07)

Lots o' links today... Padres set to bring back Bradley (Padres.com). The deal reportedly would be 1 year, $3.5-4 million. Or, as I like to call it, a bargain. This is still in the works (as are some other possibilities), so keep your fingers crossed. Padres have quiet time at Meetings (Padres.com). Even assuming Milton Bradley signs, the outfield situation remains unsettled -- third base prospect Chase Headley is preparing to take fly balls at Petco in January just in case. Brett Tomko is attracting some attention as a starter, a role he prefers, which makes it less likely that he'll re-sign with the Padres to work out of the bullpen....

DePo, Theo, Hoffo, and Zeppo

First off, if you haven't checked out our look back at second base in 2005 be sure to do so. We're trying to figure out possible comps for Josh Barfield, and right now our best guess is Toronto's Orlando Hudson. Okay, on to the meaty stuff. Dodgers Fire Paul DePodesta Yeah, I'm on top of this one. Hey, if it's less than a week, it's still news, right? Anyway, my general thoughts are that, aside from injuries, there wasn't a lot different between the 2004 playoff team and last year's version. The Brad Penny and Milton Bradley acquisitions were good moves, and for the most part DePodesta had his team headed in the right direction. ...
