There Goes a Really Slow Man

The Padres have dealt first baseman Tony Clark to Arizona for minor-league right-hander Evan Scribner. That's two trades between the teams in the past 12 months after a decade of nothing, in case you're wondering. Most fans in San Diego will remember Clark for his dramatic homer against the Mets' Billy Wagner on June 8, which culminated a season-high five-game winning streak for the Pads. I'll remember Clark for talking about his kid's soccer game during batting practice back in spring training. That and his being lifted for some ...

Padres Release Edmonds, Shuffle Deck Chairs

So much for Jim Edmonds. Ducksnorts readers projected him to hit .255/.338/.418, with the most pessimistic of us pegging his OPS at a limp 645. Sadly, the former All-Star didn't even come close to those meager numbers, finishing his Padres career at .178/.265/.233 in 103 plate appearances and, more importantly, looking lost in center field. Edmonds has been released, and his spot on the roster taken by Jody Gerut, who presumably will see most of the action in center field. This is a gutsy move considering that Gerut has 26 big-league games under his belt ...

Why I Hate Prospect Lists

Like Jayne Cobb's hat, they make me look like an idiot. Here's my list from 2003: honorable mention 11-20 1-10 A few lowlights: #18: Mike Nicolas In 2003, Nicolas likely will serve again as Rusty Tucker's primary setup man, this time at Double-A. He already has the ability to put the ball past hitters; if he keeps his walk totals down, he could be another Felix Rodriguez. Or not. #15: Ben Johnson If he can learn to use his strength, Johnson still could turn into another Brian Jordan. But I don't like his chances now as much as I did at this time last year. Hey, he landed us Heath Bell. All is forgiven. #14: Cory Stewart Although he doesn't have the pedigree ...

World Series: Astros vs White Sox

Thursday, October 20, 2005

Congrats to the Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros for reaching the World Series! It is great to see some new blood in there (and no teams from Boston or New York). I have a slight preference for the ChiSox because they don't have Roger "I Don't Know What That Thing I Threw at Mike Piazza Was" Clemens on their roster, but honestly, I'll be happy for either team and their fans. Both cities have waited a long time for this. We'll be running World Series IGDs here at Ducksnorts for those interested. However, for the best team coverage be sure to check out Vince Galloro's Exile in Wrigleyville and Lisa Gray's The Dugout. Both of these bloggers have a terrific ...
