The Khalil Conundrum

Tuesday, January 22, 2008
by Geoff Young
Late last week talks broke down between the Padres and shortstop Khalil Greene. The Padres control Greene through 2009 but are interested in pursuing a long-term deal with him. According to the U-T, the club offered a 3- or 4-year deal (no money disclosed) without success, and the two sides now have exchanged salary arbitration figures. Quoth GM Kevin Towers: A long-term contract with Khalil at this time is probably doubtful. I don't know, it might not be able to get done. Khalil's family is on the East Coast and ...

Prior Returns Home to San Diego

Thursday, December 27, 2007
by Geoff Young
The Padres have signed right-hander Mark Prior to a 1-year deal worth a guaranteed $1 million plus incentives that vary depending on whom you ask. ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the total package could be worth "over $3 million", while Dan Hayes at the North County Times places the high end at $5.5 million. Quoth GM Kevin Towers: Mark Prior is a competitor and is working hard to regain the form that made him one of the great young pitchers in the game. The good news is that Prior is 27 years old and has name recognition. The bad news ...

Towers Leaning?

Thursday, October 20, 2005
by Geoff Young
I have avoided talking about this too much because it's mostly been speculation, but the Kevin Towers-to-Arizona thing seems to be gaining momentum. I know a lot of folks think the Padres can do better than Towers at GM. Me, I'll believe it when I see it. "Getting rid" of Towers doesn't accomplish anything unless the Pads find someone better to do the job. As I mentioned before the season, KT has his flaws -- infatuation with the Rule ...

Happy Wednesday. We'll start looking back at the 2005 season in excruciating detail next week. Meantime, have some links: Blogdom's Best: San Diego Padres (Deadspin, via Gaslamp Ball). The folks at Deadspin cited Ducksnorts as the #2 Padres blog. Much obliged. With season over, how drastic will Padres' overhaul be? (NC Times). Padres eligible for free agency include Brian Giles, Ramon Hernandez, Joe Randa, ...
