Friday Links (12 Sep 08)

That was a fun one Thursday night, eh? I'd make a crack about how it's only the Giants, but seeing as how we have virtually no chance of overtaking them for fourth place, that hardly seems appropriate. Seriously, though, it's cool to see a bunch of these kids that I watched at Elsinore come up here and have some success. Matt Antonelli knocked three hits and drew a walk (and only a fine play by Omar Vizquel kept him from reaching base a fifth time), Drew Macias collected his first big-league hit (a homer off Matt Cain, no less), and Josh Geer tossed a gem. Meanwhile, we've got ...

Padres Farm Report: Spotlight on Portland

Portland Beavers in a Box: Record: 69-70 Runs Scored: 695 Runs Allowed: 764 BA/OBP/SLG: .265/.350/.431 (Pacific Coast League: .277/.347/.443) ERA: 5.04 (PCL: 4.84) DER: .632 (PCL: .637) Source: Baseball-Reference. This may be the weakest minor-league team in the Padres organization. In a league that emphasizes scoring, the Beavers' offense is a little below average, while their pitching and defense are considerably worse. The roster features a mix of legitimate prospects, suspects, guys who could have a career on the fringe if everything breaks right, and veterans who aren't going anywhere soon. The best of the lot are second baseman Matt Antonelli (whom I ranked as the Padres #2 prospect entering the season), center fielder Will Venable, and left-hander Wade LeBlanc (#7). Others potentially in the ...

One Less Reason

As you are no doubt aware by now, the Padres have traded Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for two minor-league players to be named later or cash. According to Tom Krasovic at the U-T, "By Oct. 15, the Padres will choose two Dodgers minor leaguers from a list of five already agreed upon by the two clubs." Cash apparently is an option that "would come into play only if injuries weaken the identified trade list." Thoughts? Yeah, I have a few... I'm thrilled for Maddux. He's a class act who has ...

Padres Farm Report (15 May 08)

Triple-A No games scheduled in the Pacific Coast League. After a slow start, Chase Headley has picked things up a bit. He hit .242/.317/.396 in April, but is at .358/.424/.528 so far in May. The Padres' other top prospect at Portland, Matt Antonelli, is headed in the opposite direction. He's batting .146/.294/.220 this month... Starting pitching has been awful: Wade LeBlanc (8.35 ERA, 6.96 K/9, .333 BAA), Cesar Ramos (7.36 ERA, 8.59 K/9, .316 BAA), and Josh Geer (5.09 ERA, 5.28 K/9, .283 BAA) have combined to allow 19 home runs in just 107 2/3 innings. Ramos' strikeout rate is nice (and way above his career average), but he still can't get hitters out on a consistent basis... That the Beavers are 17-18 despite a team 6.05 ERA ...

Padres Farm Report (18 Apr 08)

Before we get to the farm report, that was an epic game on Thursday night/Friday morning. Stinks that the Padres came out on the losing end, but how fun is 22 innings? I'm not going to recap it, but if you want some sense of how it played out, read the IGD. Folks delivered big time in the comments. Speaking of comments, we're now supporting avatars. Go sign up at Gravatar if the spirit moves you... Triple-A Portland and Colorado Springs were snowed out, which is just nuts in my book. Wade LeBlanc gets the start Friday. No game? No problem, have some stats: Luis Rodriguez: .500/.561/.611 Brian Myrow: .333/.492/.556 Edgar Gonzalez: .393/.500/.500 Nick Hundley: .324/.361/.618 Chip Ambres: .293/.396/.512 Will Venable: .356/.370/.533 Matt Antonelli: .200/.360/.500 Jody Gerut: ...
