While we’re all anxiously awaiting the official signing of Yorvit Torrealba, here’s something that caught my eye: Gaslamp Ball informs us that Tony Gwynn’s daughter recently got married to former Padres farmhand Kennard Jones. That got me to wondering what I’d said about Jones back in the day.
The Padres selected Jones out of the University [...]

Sunlight glimmers off the bay like sweat, like flashbulbs, a disco ball, coins from a slot machine, dice rolling, neon signs. Patterns of light moving impossibly fast, not moving at all. Stare long enough, it all becomes one. Time and meaning are lost, like the days themselves, swept out to sea.
The Padres had Monday off. [...]

Let’s see, what were we talking about this time last year? Two years ago? Four years? Six?
2007
We were chatting with our pal Steve Poltz about music, baseball, and life:
I have a song coming out on my new CD that’s called “A Brief History of My Life.” It starts off with us moving to Pasadena from [...]

Josh Banks vs Jeremy Sowers

Hello, Cleveland!
Talk about two teams that aren’t where they expected to be come mid-June… The Indians are without several key players, including Fausto Carmona, Travis Hafner, Victor Martinez, and Jake Westbrook. Former Padres second baseman Josh Barfield, who [...]

Like Jayne Cobb’s hat, they make me look like an idiot. Here’s my list from 2003:
honorable mention
11-20
1-10
A few lowlights:
#18: Mike Nicolas
In 2003, Nicolas likely will serve again as Rusty Tucker’s primary setup man, this time at Double-A. He already has the ability to put the ball past hitters; if he keeps his walk totals down, [...]

For those interested, my latest article at Hardball Times focuses on some strange games in recent history. The Padres aren’t well represented, although Andy Hawkins’ no-hit loss as a member of the Yankees shows up here (and I suppose if you really want to push it, Josh Barfield’s dad played in that game).
Jason Bay? Mewelde [...]

I’m terrible at faking enthusiasm. This World Series means nothing to me. I’d just as soon not see Tom Werner win another championship, but I don’t even care much about that anymore. Does this make me a bad baseball fan?
I dunno. Maybe…

First off, if you haven’t checked out our look back at second base in 2005 be sure to do so. We’re trying to figure out possible comps for Josh Barfield, and right now our best guess is Toronto’s Orlando Hudson.
Okay, on to the meaty stuff.

David Eckstein: Not Very Good, Not a Problem
Daniel at Friar Forecast wishes the Padres had signed free agent second baseman Felipe Lopez to replace incumbent David Eckstein. Of Eckstein, Daniel says, “He is a terrible player. His fielding and batting are both below average.”
I can’t argue the point, but I can approach it from a different angle. Maybe my expectations for 2010 [...]
