Game #141 time:5:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (11-9, 3.75) vs Jeff Francis (15-6, 4.12) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com Jeff Francis has been terrific again this year, proving that his 2006 breakout season was no fluke. On the bright side, he's been terrible against the Padres of late. Francis has allowed at least five runs in each of his last five starts against San Diego. He's 1-3 with a 9.91 ERA during that stretch, which dates back to August 2006. The bad news, of course, is that past performance is no guarantee of future performance. Here's hoping that in this case, the trend continues...

Game #118 time:7:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (7-9, 4.15) vs Jeff Francis (13-5, 4.06) pre:Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com I understand that it is customary to panic when a team is three games out of first place with 45 remaining on the schedule. According to Wikipedia, "the word panic derives from the name of the Greek god Pan." The Greek god, of course, is named after the Pan flute. Since some folks seem to believe that the Padres are sinking, this only seems appropriate:

Game #98 time:6:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (7-7, 4.17) vs Jeff Francis (10-5, 4.07) Before the season I thought that Colorado's pitching would surprise folks, and it has. I also suggested that Jeff Francis could finish in the top 10 in the NL in ERA. That probably won't happen, but for a kid who plays half his games, he is putting up some terrific numbers. On second thought, lose the qualifier. Francis is putting up some terrific numbers, period. Go Padres!

first pitch: 5:05 p.m. PT television: Channel 4SD matchup: Clay Hensley (0-3, 12.21 ERA) vs Jeff Francis (1-1, 5.60 ERA) Hello, offense. Don't look now, but for the first time in more than 6 years, the Padres have scored at least 11 runs in consecutive games. The last time that happened was April 7 and 8, 2001, when the Pads beat the Rockies, 14-10 and 11-3, at Coors Field. Phil Nevin homered twice and drove in eight runs over those two games. Heck, even Donaldo Mendez knocked one out of the park. Back to 2007, Clay Hensley gave up 10 runs in his last start against the Cubs. He seriously needs to pitch a good game on Saturday. Here's ...
