IGD: Padres @ Rockies (21 Apr 07)

first pitch: 5:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Clay Hensley (0-3, 12.21 ERA) vs Jeff Francis (1-1, 5.60 ERA)

Hello, offense. Don’t look now, but for the first time in more than 6 years, the Padres have scored at least 11 runs in consecutive games.

The last time that happened was April 7 and 8, 2001, when the Pads beat the Rockies, 14-10 and 11-3, at Coors Field. Phil Nevin homered twice and drove in eight runs over those two games. Heck, even Donaldo Mendez knocked one out of the park.

Back to 2007, Clay Hensley gave up 10 runs in his last start against the Cubs. He seriously needs to pitch a good game on Saturday. Here’s hoping…

  1. well he only hits 182 against Liney

  2. This is not a good situation to be in.

  3. 149 … assuming that’s a question … I think the answer is “it’s the 8th inning, therefore must put in Linebrink” …

  4. Guzman is really, really bad.

  5. YES YES YES our bullpen may be tired .. but they get it done

  6. Brocail should be in. His goatee would overpower and force Helton’s goatee into submission.

  7. Does every Padre pitcher in this game have to look absolutely awful before miraculously getting out of the inning with limited damage?

  8. Can someone define “deep center”? … as in “T. Helton flied out to deep center” …

  9. wow 15 hit Pads 13 hits Rockies

  10. 153: Black hasn’t always followed the formula.

  11. 157: They’re trying to make SportsCenter.

  12. 160 … sorry, that was just a flash-back …

  13. 157 : maybe they think they have spoiled us … to many 1-2-3 want to add some excitment to the innings

  14. 158: Left-center about 10 feet in front of the warning track.

  15. deep center … further than the infield but not all the way out directly behind the pitcher… lol

  16. With a 4-run lead, what has to happen for the game to become a save situation.

  17. 166: 1 Rockie runner on base…. I believe

  18. 167: Thanks for the clarification.

  19. So does Linebrink start the 9th?

  20. That was the answer to 166.

  21. Notes from AP:

SAN DIEGO: C Josh Bard (strained left groin) will participate in extended spring training on Tuesday in Arizona. “We want him to get some at-bats, work behind the plate and (get in) some running,” manager Bud Black said. … Bard’s brother Mike is a batting practice pitcher for the Rockies. Josh Bard went to high school in Denver. … OF Mike Cameron was back in the lineup a day after hitting a ball off his right shin. “It was a direct hit,” Black said. “It’s sore, but Mike didn’t want to come out of the lineup.” … Black said he wants to reduce his pitching staff from 13 to 12.

  22. He comes into the game with the potential tying run either on base, at bat, or on deck.

  23. Law of averages: If you make enough rule V picks, one will eventually work out

  24. way to go boys ..

Have a good game tomorrow boys .. I don’t get off work till 4pm .. will have to tape the game

  25. Ball game!

Series win in Colorado, let’s hope the Dogers lose tonite so we can gain a game.

  26. Meredith and Hoffy fresh for tomorrow … this is going well …

  27. Today was nice payback for any other bad luck we’ve had this season. Good work by the offense and defense, but the pitching was pretty bad.

  28. Nice write up on Man Bo at mlb.com today … http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070421&content_id=1922884&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd

And here’s fun fact from that article …

Entering Saturday, only the Padres (10-0) and the Braves (11-0) have yet to blow a lead this season.

  29. 179: thanks for the link on the Man Bo article

  30. Was surfin’ padres.mlb.com and stumbled on to this … http://padres.auction.mlb.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=81958868&prmenbr=33287369&aunbr=82305578 … I’ve never heard of such a thing … but it’s nice to know that it’s possible to get good seats if I wanted to …

  31. Here’s an idea … make a minor trade with the O’s for Jon Knott … they just sent him back to AAA … he’d be a nice RH bat on our bench right now …

  32. Pardon the threadjack here, but how much longer before the Friars tell Matt Bush to learn a curveball? He’s hitting .125 at Lake Elsinore, and despite the fact that he’s still only 21, he’s clearly not making any progress.

    Geoff, you’ve seen Matt (I think)…any thoughts?

  33. 183 … I’m with ya … there’s been enough talk of this in the media that it’s gotta be on the minds of the Padre brass … it’ll happen … they may need to find a SS for the Storm first … perhaps that what’s they’ll get for Manny :-)

OT … Dogs tie the game in the bottom of the 9th on a wildpitch + throwing error + pass’d ball sequence … Paulino clearly the goat-of-the-game … ouch :-(

  34. 184: I was watching that game; hurt to watch, bummed to see them pull out an ugly win, but glad I love the Pads not the Bucs

  35. re 184: er, i knew the dogs won, but not that they got a frickin’ walk off GS; that is not “an ugly win”.

  36. I think the “ugly win” portion was talking about how they tied the game…which was a pitch in the dirt that the runner took off for 2nd and should’ve been out by a mile but the catcher threw it into CF and then another wild pitch to bring the run home to tie the game in the 9th…

  37. #109: I was actually at the game in Anaheim. Ramirez fell behind in the count 3-1 and then put Vlad on first.

#183: The one time I saw Bush, he was lifted for a pinch hitter late in a close game. Draw your own conclusions.

  38. What’s going on with Sledge? Cruz Jr is doing well, but Sledge was doing well too….
