Before we get to Sunday's games, here's a brief chat I had with John Conniff, of MadFriars.com, about his impressions from a recent trip to Portland: Ducksnorts: The big names at Portland, of course, are Chase Headley and Matt Antonelli. How do they look so far this year? Conniff: Obviously by the numbers that they are putting up not that great. The big difference that I could see from them this year from last at San Antonio is they are both having trouble adjusting to the fact that Triple-A pitchers can throw strikes early in the count with their secondary pitches and have better fastball command than Double-A. Thanks to the Steve Poltz interview and my jaunt to Vegas for BlogWorld (recap at Knuckle Curve for those interested), we've got a little catching up to do: Wednesday, November 7 Saguaros 6, Javelinas 2 (box | recap). Will Venable, playing right field and batting eighth, doubled and homered in four at-bats. Jonathan Ellis worked a perfect eighth, striking out one. Escogido 6, Azucareros 1 (box). Welcome to the Vince Sinisi show. Batting third and playing left field, Sinisi singled and homered twice in five trips to the plate. Navojoa 4, Mochis 3 (box). I tried to watch some of the USD - Long Beach State game on Sunday at Cunningham Stadium, but it was brutal. These kids haven't been playing for some time, and it showed. I've never seen so many walks and wild pitches. To the winter leagues... Friday, November 2 Saguaros 11, Javelinas 5 (box | recap). Matt Antonelli, batting sixth, singled, doubled, and drew three walks in five trips to the plate. Nick Hundley, in the #8 hole, went 2-for-4 with a walk and 3 RBI. The Saguaros pounded out 15 hits on the day. Jonathan Ellis worked a 13-pitch perfect eighth, while Will Startup needed just 10 pitches to close out the victory, allowing a one-out single before ...

Congrats to the Red Sox on their World Series victory or whatever. Stephen said it best in the comments: Nothing warms my heart more than seeing Tom Werner standing on the podium to accept the WS trophy. Matt Antonelli started at second and went 1-for-2 with a walk in the #7 hole. Nick Hundley batted ninth and went 0-for-2 with a walk. Will Startup needed six pitches to work a scoreless ninth. I am gradually tracking down all the Padres' winter-league assignments. Bear with me... Friday, October 12 Arizona Fall League Javelinas 8, Saguaros 3 (box score). Matt Antonelli, batting eighth for the Saguaros, went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. He's 0-for-9 with a walk so far. Reader JP compares Antonelli to former big-leaguer Steve Sax, and it's not a bad call, although I liken him more to one of Sax's contemporaries, Bill Doran, who had a bit more power. Winter Leagues Begin

Yeah, the Hawaii Winter League has been going for a while, but the Padres don't have any entrants there, so what do we care. The Arizona Fall League and Mexican Winter League both begin Tuesday. I think I've tracked down all the Padres playing there, but let me know if I've missed anyone... Arizona Fall League Peoria Saguaros Beyond Fukudome I try to deal in facts as much as possible, but Peter mentioned in the comments a rumor that cannot be ignored: Apparently the Padres are looking at Japan's Kosuke Fukudome as an option in the outfield for 2008.
