Two Timely Bombs and a Whole Lotta Hangin’ On

Great win Sunday afternoon against the Mets. I especially liked the way the Padres held off a mid-game charge and finished strong. The momentum started to shift in the sixth, but the home team didn’t let it go down the way I feared it might. Anyway, a few random observations from the game: Youth continues [...]

Established Win Shares

The Baseball Crank is putting together his annual division previews “using Established Win Shares Levels as a jumping-off point.” He’s reached the NL West and, like most folks, he isn’t real excited about the Padres this year. One of the things I find interesting is that, despite the fact that the Padres are mostly older [...]

Brazelton Out, Hensley In

As we noted during Friday’s IGD, Clay Hensley will take Dewon “Instant Offense” Brazelton’s spot in the rotation beginning Tuesday in Denver. Both the San Diego Union-Tribune and Padres.com have confirmed this. Good to see the guy with the career 2.39 ERA get the nod over the guy with the career 6.42 ERA.

A Use for Park?

I had the pleasure last night of seeing Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares in concert. I won’t attempt to describe their music, but I will say that if you ever have a chance to watch them perform, by all means do so. What they are able to produce using only their voices is stunning. You [...]

Friday Links

Today, it’s all about guys trying to make the club: Gonzalez happy to be home with Padres (Padres.com). A mostly fluffy piece about former #1 draft pick Adrian Gonzalez, who returns to his hometown as part of payment for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka. Quoth Grady Fuson, who knew Gonzalez from their days with the [...]

So, About That Bullpen

Channel 4 rebroadcast the 2005 game of the year last night. The grand slam by Khalil Greene with two out in the ninth to tie it was unbelieveable. Equally unlikely were the events leading up to Greene’s heroics, propelled at least in part by Frank Robinson’s curious use of his bullpen. This got me to [...]
