Padres Prospect Report

by Peter Friberg

You will not see me complain about the Padres. Assuming the big league team makes the playoffs, they will have three organizational teams in the playoffs… Organization of the year?

Friday, September 14, 2007

AA

San Antonio 3, Springfield 2 (San Antonio leads series, 2-1)

Will Venable: 4 AB, 0 R, 2 H, 0 RBI; 2B
Nick Hundley: 4 AB, 2 R, 2 H, 3 RBI; 2 HR, SO
Wade LeBlanc: 2 AB, 0 R, 2 H, 0 RBI
Wade LeBlanc: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR

High-A

Lake Elsinore 3, San Jose 2 (Lake Elsinore leads series, 2-0)

Craig Cooper: 1 AB, 0 R, 0 H, 2 RBI; 2 SF
Nathaniel Culp: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Ernesto Frieri: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR

Commentary:

Because of some early struggles, a lot of people have forgotten about Nick Hundley (remember, he was only in High-A for less than half a season last year). Don’t be one of those people.

AA

San Antonio 11, Springfield 7 (San Antonio wins series, 3-1)

Will Venable: 5 AB, 2 R, 3 H, 0 RBI; BB, SO
Matt Antonelli: 4 AB, 3 R, 2 H, 0 RBI; 2 BB, SO
Chase Headley: 6 AB, 2 R, 2 H, 1 RBI
Nick Hundley: 5 AB, 0 R, 2 H, 2 RBI; BB, 2 SO
Brett Dowdy: 6 AB, 1 R, 3 H, 6 RBI; 2B, 3B, HR
Mike Ekstrom: 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR – no-hitter into 7th

High-A

San Jose 2, Lake Elsinore 0 (Lake Elsinore leads, 2-1)

Stephen Faris: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR

Commentary:

San Antonio had the worst record in the first half of the Texas League season. About that time, the Padres promoted Wade LeBlanc, Manny Ayala, Matt Antonelli, and Chad Huffman. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Sunday, September 16, 2007

High-A

San Jose 6, Lake Elsinore 1 (series tied, 2-2)

Kyle Blanks: 2 AB, 0 R, 1 H, 0 RBI; 2 BB, SO
Cory Luebke: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR

Commentary:

Monday is the sudden death, one game finale. Blow Storm, blow!

Thanks, Peter. The Pirates come to town for four games starting Monday night. Get out to the games, hang here for the IGDs, do whatever you can to support the guys. A third straight NL West championship would be sweet.

  1. Barring a lot of prospect trading, Portland should get a well deserved great team next year. Headley, Antonelli, Venable, Huffman, Hundley. Rotation headed by Geer, LeBlanc, Carrillo, Ramos. How long since we had that much talent in AAA?

  2. I would imagine we will see cooper and possibly blanks ub there as well.

  3. Re 1: or level-skipping and level-repeating…

  4. 2: no way Blanks is in AAA… They want to go slow w/ him b/c of Gonzalez

  5. Yeah no reason to skip Blanks a level, with his level of upside start him in AA and see what happens.

I’d imagine at least 1 of and possibly both of Antonelli/Headley start the year on the big league roster. Odds are at this point that it is Headley, on that same note Kouz has certainly established himself as an everyday player somewhere on the roster.

  6. Less (aka Peter): Wade LeBlanc 2 for 2? Can he play catcher?

GY: Cheers to you for demanding better — No to the wild card (yet).

  7. I’ll be just as interested to see what happens with the pitching staff although 2 more good starts by Tomko and I think he earns himself a spot in the rotation next year. It’s certainly nice to have another starter capable of the K when he needs it.

  8. 1. It will be there best team in quite awhile -one guy I could see being moved up in mid-season next year is Freese – either as a third baseman, if Headley is promoted or at first base, where he is going to get some time in the Instructional Leagues.

I agree with Peter, Blanks is in San Antonio for the full year – as will Cooper, who is behind Huffman and Venable on the corners.

  9. Callis has some Headley/Kouz comments (free) over at BA

  10. A self-alleged neighbor of Mike Cameron’s posted in Tim Sullivan’s chat that Cameron has told him that if the Pads don’t pay him what he thinks he’s worth then he’ll sign with Atlanta.

Does anybody really think that Cameron would volunteer this info to the dude two doors down? Of course, I don’t know the guy. Sullivan took it seriously, asking the poster for his contact info.

  11. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Cameron told a neighbor that…especially considering we saw Brian Giles complaining about Petco a few weeks ago at Baja Fresh and Cole Hamels has posted on the ESPN Padres board since being drafted talking to a neighbor doesn’t seem out of line.

  12. 11: I missed Giles doing that. Was that in U-T? To a Ducksnorter?

  13. re 12: We=my wife and I….not currently having lunch with all the Ducksnorts members in Rancho Bernardo

  14. 13: I guess I should try to read every word of a sentence.

His flyout the other night against the Giants: I thought that was a homer no doubt. My first reaction has been wrong plenty of times but I couldn’t believe that one didn’t leave the yard.

  15. I think the length of the contract the Padres may offer will be a bigger obstacle than the length of the fences.

As I recall, talks about an extension were called off in spring training after KT & Co. was unwilling to offer more than a two-year deal. I’d bet that Cameron will be looking for a minimum of three and will at least be asking for four-year deal out of some team.

My guess is that the Padres will be looking for a higher-average, better-contact alternative in CF for 2008, even if they have to sacrifice some power.

  16. Re: 15 you mean like jaun pierre? no thanks!

but I agree with the Pads I would not give cameron more than a 2 year deal.

  17. 15: I don’t think the Padres care about getting higher average and more contact – although I’m sure the FO wishes Cameron’s OBP was closer to last year’s. No way he gets a 4-year contract from the Pads. I’d be very surprised if ATL gives him that length. He’ll probably get three years from somebody. Like Mr. Waits says, you have to weigh whether that almost guaranteed underperforming third year is worth it for the other two.

  18. Random stats… Kouzmanoff by month BA/OBA/SLG (wOBA)

    April: .113/.171/.183 (.165)
    May: .286/.375/.543 (.389)
    June: .243/.291/.405 (.303)
    July: .272/.314/.469 (.348)
    August: .289/.333/.467 (.357)
    September: .442/.500/.721 (.514)
    Season: .263/.320/.448 (.336)

Looks like: Slump, Adjustment by Kouz, Adjustment by League, Adjustment by Kouz

  19. Great quote from OG about his decreased power, from the U-T: “People want to talk stuff about our offense,” Giles quipped. “They move the fences back, they take steroids away, what do you expect?”

  20. 18 … it’s a beautiful thing!

  21. It still isn’t time to settle for the wild card, m’kay?

Amen! Let’s chase the D’Backs down and make them wonder what ran over them.

Let them fight it out with Philly and the Dodgers for who gets the wild card.

  22. No, 1 game back in the loss column shouldn’t necessitate giving up with 14 to play.

Here is hoping the Giants don’t lay down and play dead like they did over the weekend.

  23. Here’s an article on the NL West race by one of the BP writers:

    http://www.nysun.com/article/62742

  24. 23 … thanks for the link … a pretty good look at the NL West!

  25. I like that Jake has 44 votes in the poll for Padre MVP …

  26. Re: fun stat. 1927 Yankees 158 HR’s, 42 by opponents = 79%. Yikes. 1961 Yankees 240 HR’s, 137 by opponents = 63.7%. They need to go 48 and 0 this year to tie ’61. Hate them now, would have then.

  27. Over at The Hardball Times, Steve Treder looks at Great Platoons from 1979-1989 and the Platoon of Tim Flannery and Jerry Royster made the list.

Just thought I’d pass on the linkage. :)
