Vulture, Thy Name Is Cassidy

Not to pick on the guy, because he’s been unbelievable out of the ‘pen for the Padres so far this year, but was there ever a pitcher less deserving of a win than Scott Cassidy in Wednesday night’s game against the Dodgers? Chris Young throws 106 pitches before departing with two outs in the seventh and a 4-1 lead. Cassidy throws six pitches, one of which leaves the yard and ties the game, thus denying Young the victory. Josh Barfield swats a two-run homer in top of the next inning to reclaim the lead, and the Pads go on to win, 11-5.

The least effective pitcher for the winnng team — the only guy who actually surrendered the lead — is credited with the victory. This proves yet again that baseball, like life, ain’t fair.

Also, fire Dave Magadan. ;-)

  1. Fire Mags, are you crazy? who would ever make a suggestion like that? Mags is great on the road. We’ll see about the Petco Curse.

Maybe we could talk Moores into hiring a second hitting coach and Mags could take the road games and the new hitting coach, preferably a witch doctor with a bone in his nose, could take the home games and the Petco Curse.

    Go Padres!

  2. I think he was being sarcastic

  3. I rewound the Tivo and looked at those six pitches Cassidy threw. The first two were great – low and away. He wasted the next one. The 1-2 pitch was fouled off, and the batter was hopping up and down in frustration, because he knew he’d missed a great pitch to hit (belt high, outer 1/3 of the plate). So what did Cassidy do? He threw an even fatter pitch – right down the middle – and it landed in the seats!!

What was up with that? Two _great_ pitches, and then two fat ones. Why?

  4. I’d like to introduce a hypothesis/proposal that scientifically explains the turnaround in the Padres’ batting fortunes: The Curse of Doug Mirabelli!

    To wit:

Padres runs/game with Sir Doug: 3.667
Padres runs/game since the trade: 8.667

    Padres HRs/game avec Doug: 0.58
    Padres HRs/game sans Doug: 1.33

    Padres record with Doug: 9-15
    Since: 3-0

See? The numbers do all the ‘splainin’. It’s not just me talking, it’s science. And you can’t argue with science.

  5. I’d like to think that with the season Cassidy’s had so far, he was due a win.

If Chris Young can keep up throwing the way he has been, he’ll get plenty of his own before the season’s over.

  6. I blame Bochy. Young had handled everyone in the lineup except Navarro. If you are gonna take Young out, then do it before Navarro hits. I dont think that Young would have had a problem with Saenz. Oh well, a win is a win. Young did look really good. (got tv on that one and get it again today.) Yeaaaaaa!

  7. I hope your right, BG because I’m having a hell of a time finding a witch doctor with a bone in his nose by Fri.

  8. X strikes again … HR #7 tonight … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=260504121

  9. OK, so why did you pass on the vulture TWICE in NL Willlard (once for Chan ho Park!) and then piss me off by taking him in BL Roaring 20 (where I need him more than I did in NL Willard)?

    Oh, and happy birthday.

    Medea’s Child

  10. Thanks for the birthday wishes, MC! As for why I took Park over Cassidy — “never mind the ERA, how many innings has he pitched?” (or words to that effect).
