July 9, 1969, San Diego: Reds 4, Padres 3 (box score) Another day, another home loss to the Reds. Clay Kirby and left-hander Jim Merritt hooked up in this one, and although neither pitched particularly well, both kept their team in the game. Cincinnati struck first. Pete Rose led off the game with a single to left. After Rose stole second, Bobby Tolan beat out a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Alex Johnson then flied to right, scoring Rose and advancing Tolan to second. With Tony Perez up, Tolan stole third and then was caught trying to steal home. (I can't imagine a scenario in ...

June 23, 1969, Cincinnati: Reds 5, Padres 0 (box score) After being blanked in the final two games of a weekend series at Houston, the Padres headed north to take on the Reds. Gary Ross made the start for San Diego, while Cincinnati countered with left-hander Jim Merritt. The Reds threatened immediately in this one. With one out in the first inning, Bobby Tolan was hit by a pitch. Alex Johnson singled him to third, bringing up Tony Perez. Fortunately for Ross and the Padres, Perez rapped into a 6-4-3 double play. San Diego wasn't so lucky in the second. After Lee May flied out to lead off the inning, ...

May 4, 1969, Cincinnati: Reds 3, Padres 2 (box score), Reds 12, Padres 0 (box score) The first game of a doubleheader at Crosley Field featured Al Santorini and Jack Fisher. In a sign of how times have changed, Fisher actually worked an inning of relief just two days earlier in the Reds' 8-5 loss to San Diego. The Padres and Reds traded runs in the third inning. Ed Spiezio led off the top half with a homer to left. Cincy responded by parlaying a walk, sacrifice, groundout, and ...

Cincinnati held a 4-1 advantage into the fourth inning. Nate Colbert led off that frame with a grounder to third that Tony Perez couldn't handle. After Cito Gaston and Ed Spiezio grounded out, Chris Cannizzaro singled to left. Bill Davis, batting for Kirby, then drew a walk. Leadoff man ...

April 25, 1969, San Diego: Reds 4, Padres 1 (box score) The Reds, making their first visit to San Diego, sent right-hander Jim Maloney to the mound against Tommie Sisk. A Fresno native, Maloney had won 20 or more games in a season twice by age 25. In 1968, a down year by his standards, he still notched 16 victories. The Reds scored first on a two-out single by Pete Rose in the top of the third inning. They added three more in the fourth. Bobby Tolan led off with a walk. After an Alex Johnson ground out, Tony Perez singled to left. With runners at the corners, a ...
