September 10, 1969, Cincinnati: Padres 2, Reds 1 (box score) This Wednesday affair at Crosley Field turned out to be quite the pitchers duel. Through the first three innings, there were a total of three baserunners: all walks by the Padres against Cincinnati starter Tony Cloninger. In the fourth, San Diego scored the game's first run. Rookie Jerry Morales, getting the start in left field, led off the inning with his first big-league home run. The score remained 1-0 until the sixth, when the Reds tied the contest. July 8, 1969, San Diego: Reds 8, Padres 2 (box score) Cincinnati jumped to an early 1-0 lead, and it could have been much worse. Ed Spiezio led off the top half with a homer to left. Cincy responded by parlaying a walk, sacrifice, groundout, and ...

May 3, 1969, Cincinnati: Padres 13, Braves 5 (box score) For the second straight game, Padres batters busted out in a big way. How big? The Reds needed three pitchers to get out of the first inning. The starter, Tony Cloninger, faced five batters; all reached base, all scored. His replacement, Jim Merritt, allowed four of the five batters he faced to reach base and score. The first eight batters for San Diego reached safely before starting pitcher Joe Niekro finally struck out trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Niekro had a 6-0 lead at the time, thanks in part to an Ollie Brown grand slam. By ...
