September 20, 1969, San Diego: Braves 3, Padres 2 (box score) Tommie Sisk deserved better in this one, he really did. Sisk and the Padres carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth. Then things got weird. Felipe Alou led off the frame with a grounder that second baseman Jose Arcia couldn't handle. Two batters later, a single by ex-Padre Tony Gonzalez brought home pinch-runner Ralph Garr to tie the game. In the ninth, with Orlando Cepeda on first and one out, Bob Didier singled to center. A Cito Caston error on the play allowed Cepeda to score and moved Didier up to third base. Frank Reberger came ...

September 16, 1969, San Diego: Padres 8, Astros 1 (box score) Tommie Sisk entered Tuesday's contest with a 1-11 record. Houston's starter, Tom Griffin, came in with a 10-7 record. This day, though, belonged to Sisk and the San Diego Padres. The home team got to work early. Jose Arcia, the previous game's star, led off the first with a single to center and then stole second. Ron Slocum followed with his first big-league hit, a single that moved Arcia to third. Ollie Brown then singled home Arcia and Nate Colbert launched a homer that made the score 4-0 before an out had been recorded. The Padres added another ...

1969: Padres Can’t Come Back in Cincy

September 11, 1969, Cincinnati: Reds 6, Padres 4 (box score) The Padres dug themselves into a serious hole early in this one, and couldn't quite get back out of it. After mounting a minor threat in the second inning, the Reds touched up San Diego starter Tommie Sisk in the third. Pitcher Gary Nolan led off the frame with a single to center. After Ted Savage drew a walk, Bobby Tolan singled home Nolan, and Pete Rose drove in two more with a double to center. Johnny Bench then singled, but center fielder Jerry Morales nailed Rose at the plate for the inning's first out. Exit Sisk, enter Jack Baldschun. ...

1969: Mets Beat Padres Twice on Tuesday

August 26, 1969, San Diego: Mets 8, Padres 4 (box score); Mets 3, Padres 0 (box score) Dick Kelley and Tom Seaver squared off in the opener. The Padres took a 2-0 lead in the second on a one-out Nate Colbert walk followed by a two-out Cito Gaston home run. The Mets tied the score in the fourth, on the exact same sequence that plated San Diego's runs. Tommy Agee drew a one-out walk, and Donn Clendenon drilled a two-out homer. In the sixth, with Tommie Sisk now pitching for ...

1969: Padres Swept in Philadelphia

August 24, 1969, Philadelphia: Phillies 6, Padres 4 (box score) The Padres, who had lost the first two of a three-game series in Philly, sent Tommie Sisk out to the mound for the finale on a Sunday afternoon. Sisk entered the contest with an 0-7 record, so he didn't fit the classic definition of "stopper," but maybe today would be different. The Phillies countered with left-hander Woodie Fryman. In his last start against the Padres, on June 15, Fryman had recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts en route to a 5-4 victory in San Diego. Philadelphia got to Sisk early in this one. Four batters into the game, he had allowed ...

August 20, 1969, Montreal: Expos 11, Padres 10 (box score) If you like offense, this was the game for you. Even though the Padres ended up losing, they made a valiant comeback attempt. The Expos jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first on four singles and a walk off San Diego starter Tommie Sisk. The Padres responded with a run of their own in the second, but Montreal scored four more in the bottom half of the inning. The big blow was a Ron Fairly three-run homer off reliever Dave Roberts, who had replaced Sisk after just nine batters. San Diego stormed back in the fourth. With ...

1969: Padres Drop Another Doubleheader

August 16, 1969, New York: Mets 2, Padres 0 (box score); Mets 2, Padres 1 (box score) What could be better than playing a doubleheader after two off days? Why, facing Tom Seaver in the first game, of course. Tommie Sisk threw one of his better games for San Diego, allowing just two runs over six innings. Unfortunately, against Seaver and the Mets, that was two runs too many. The Mets scored their first run in the fifth on singles by Bud Harrelson and Tommie Agee, wrapped around a Seaver ...
