September 16, 1969, San Diego: Padres 8, Astros 1 (box score) Tommie Sisk entered Tuesday's contest with a 1-11 record. Houston's starter, Tom Griffin, came in with a 10-7 record. This day, though, belonged to Sisk and the San Diego Padres. The home team got to work early. Jose Arcia, the previous game's star, led off the first with a single to center and then stole second. Ron Slocum followed with his first big-league hit, a single that moved Arcia to third. Ollie Brown then singled home Arcia and Nate Colbert launched a homer that made the score 4-0 before an out had been recorded. The Padres added another ...

September 8, 1969, Houston: Astros 9, Padres 2 (box score) Mike Corkins made his first big-league start on a Monday in the Astrodome. It could have gone better. Corkins, whom the Padres selected from the Giants with the 31st pick in the expansion draft, didn't make it out of the second inning. Heck, he barely made it out of the first, allowing four runs on four hits (all for extra bases, including two triples to lead off the game) and a walk. The Padres scored in the second on a one-out solo home run off the bat of Nate Colbert to make the score 4-1, but Houston answered with ...

June 21, 1969, Houston: Astros 4, Padres 0 (box score) Toward the end of June, the Padres embarked on a most unwelcome trip to Shutout City. The first stop on their tour involved a 12-strikeout performance by Astros rookie right-hander Tom Griffin. Griffin, Houston's first-round pick in 1966, was making just the 13th start of his big-league career. He entered the contest with a 3-3 record and a high 4.02 ERA, but had struck out better than 10 batters per 9 innings in the early going. The Padres countered with Dick Kelley. After cruising through the opening frame, Kelley gave ground in the second inning on a two-out double off ...

1969: Padres Complete Sweep in First Ever Series

April 10, 1969, San Diego: Padres 2, Astros 0 (box score) The first two games in Padres history had been dominated by pitching, and the third game proved no different. Right-hander Tom Griffin, a former first-round pick, made his big-league debut for the Astros. The Padres countered with journeyman southpaw Dick Kelley, who had gone 2-4 with a 2.76 ERA shuttling between the rotation and bullpen for Atlanta in '68. What a start it turned out to be for Kelley. Through six innings, he'd allowed only a walk to Dennis Menke and nothing else. The Padres, meanwhile, had manufactured a run in the third on singles by Rafael Robles and ...
