Unfinished Notes on a Bullpen

Warning: This post is a mess; proceed at your own risk... I was thinking about the bullpen a while back and got to wondering a few things: How have Padres relievers performed this year as compared to the starters? How does this compare with league average? How does this compare with recent Padres teams? How does this compare with all Padres teams? What were some shared characteristics of the good bullpens? Of the bad ones? How was workload distributed (i.e., was it spread fairly evenly or did two or three guys carry most of the burden)? How often were relievers used? How hard were they worked? As is often the case, I got distracted. I ended up tackling (well, maybe not tackling, more like tapping on the shoulder) #3 and #4, and ignoring the rest. ...

I spend the weekend at Comic-Con, and the Padres go out and win three straight games. Are they even allowed to do that? Scott Hairston hit another home run on Sunday. Dude is batting .364/.417/.909 in July. He also has eight homers this month and 11 RBI. That's pretty hard to do. Hairston has some unusual splits in 2008. First off, he's destroying left-handers: .297/.313/.658, with 10 homers in just 115 plate appearances. Life’s Sweetest Reward

The season is extremely young, and we shouldn't place too much faith into three weeks of stats, but have you noticed that the Padres are beating their Pythagorean? Yeah, they've scored 49 runs and allowed 57, which is more indicative of a 6-9 record than the Pads' actual 8-7 mark. Again, it's early and we don't want to read much (if anything) into this just yet. Something worth watching, though. * * * In retrospect, maybe leaving Cla Meredith out for a second inning of work wasn't such a great idea. Wouldn't that have been a good time for Heath Bell?
