1969: Reed Fans Thirteen En Route to Victory over Padres

September 27, 1969, Atlanta: Braves 4, Padres 2 (box score) Ron Reed -- yes, the former basketball player -- dominated the Padres in this one. San Diego's sole chance to cause major damage came in the sixth, and for a while it looked as though they might. With one out, Roberto Pena and Ollie Brown singled. Pena advanced to third on the play, with Brown taking second on the throw. In a move that seems baffling in retrospect, Reed intentionally walked Al Ferrara to load the bases for Nate Colbert. The young first baseman delivered, singling home two runs and giving the Padres ...

September 21, 1969, San Diego: Braves 8, Padres 2 (box score) The Braves scored twice in the third off Joe Niekro, and that was, effectively, the game. They added five more in the seventh -- the final run coming on Hank Aaron's 43rd home run of the season -- to pad their lead to 7-0. San Diego pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh. Roberto Pena tripled to lead off the inning. One out later, an Al Ferrara ground out scored Ron Slocum, running for Pena. The Braves and Padres exchanged single runs in the eighth to make the final score 8-2. Three Atlanta batters finished with ...

July 18, 1969, Atlanta: Braves 6, Padres 2 (box score); Braves 6, Padres 3 (box score) The Padres traded outfielder Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta on June 13, 1969. This day, however, Gonzalez made the expansion club from San Diego regret its decision. In the first game, Al Santorini hooked up with Ron Reed. The game remained scoreless through the first three innings. In the fourth, home runs by Al Ferrara and Larry Stahl gave the Padres a 2-0 lead. The Braves, though, didn't stay down for long. In the bottom half of ...

1969: Padres Rally Late, Earn Split with Braves in Atlanta

May 1, 1969, Atlanta: Padres 4, Braves 3 (box score) May began for the Padres in the same way April had -- with a win. Dick Kelley and Ron Reed started this one in front of 5,854 fans at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Kelley hadn't pitched well in his first start against the Braves on April 22, and he fared even worse on this day. After allowing three hits, a walk, and a wild pitch over the first two innings, Kelley lost it in the third. Two walks, an Orlando Cepeda triple, an error, and a Clete Boyer double gave the Braves a 3-0 lead. The Padres battled back with two runs in the top of ...

1969: Padres Return Home, Fall to Braves

April 21, 1969, San Diego: Braves 5, Padres 2 (box score) Back home in San Diego, the Padres welcomed the Atlanta Braves to town for a brief two-game series. The Braves were led by Hank Aaron, whose 512 career home runs placed him fifth on the all-time leaderboard behind Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Willie Mays, and of course, Babe Ruth. Johnny Podres started for the home team, while right-hander Ron Reed got the call for Atlanta. Reed had been named to the National League All-Star team as a rookie in 1968, but he'd gotten off to a rough start in his sophomore season. Today, however, it was Podres' (and the ...
