While we’re all anxiously awaiting the official signing of Yorvit Torrealba, here’s something that caught my eye: Gaslamp Ball informs us that Tony Gwynn’s daughter recently got married to former Padres farmhand Kennard Jones. That got me to wondering what I’d said about Jones back in the day.
The Padres selected Jones out of the University [...]

Life happened this week; the book, not so much. I did make up some ground over the weekend — put in about 10 hours on Saturday and another 4-5 on Sunday. It’s not as much as I’d have liked, but it’s better than nothing.
In addition to the actual writing, I’m playing a lot with design [...]

In the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual I noted that Adrian Gonzalez didn’t ground into many double plays in 2007. Given how slow he is and how many he’d hit into the year before, this surprised me. Well, now he’s back to his old tricks:

Fun game Tuesday night. Nice to see Scott Hairston finally get on track — two doubles, a homer, and an out to the wall in left-center works for me.
Chip Ambres, Brian Myrow, and Joe Thatcher all were recalled to the big club [...]

Fun win Friday night. A buddy of mine scored us some sweet seats in the Toyota Terrace for the excellent price of free. Among other things we got to see Greg Maddux pitch a gem and Chase Headley knock his first homer in San Diego.
My wife and I particularly enjoyed watching Headley and Khalil Greene [...]

That was satisfying. We took the in-laws out to the ballgame — sprung for Toyota Terrace seats, first time this year. They picked a good time to visit. Mom is from the old country, but I was heartened to see that she chose to root for the home team rather than Hiroki Kuroda. She digs [...]
Brian Giles should have one more hit to his credit this season. Not that it affected the outcome, but Alfredo Amezaga absolutely didn’t catch Giles’ soft liner in the top of the eighth. Also, what a strange game for Paul McAnulty: hit by a pitch, thrown out trying to advance on a popup to third [...]

The Padres need to go out and get more hitters. I know this is true because I keep hearing it. I also know it’s a complete load of garbage. What they really need is for the hitters they already have to start performing up to their capabilities.

Thanks to reader Lance for hooking us up with seats two rows behind the visitors dugout on Wednesday night. First time I’ve been anywhere near that close at Petco Park, and it’s a whole different experience. For a guy like me who lives in nosebleed, just, wow.
Also, belated welcome to all the folks at Gaslamp [...]

I’m late to the party — blame a lack of sleep and previously scheduled interview (Jim returned the favor and interviewed me at AZ Snakepit) — but here are some observations from Thursday’s epic 22-inning battle with the Rockies:
Jake Peavy dominated. Yeah, the game went another 14 innings after Peavy departed, but he was brilliant.
Trevor [...]
