On a Thursday afternoon, in front of 8,088 at San Diego Stadium, Al Santorini squared off against rookie right-hander Mike Torrez. The Cardinals drew first blood. August 5, 1969, San Diego: Cardinals 2, Padres 1 (box score) The Padres returned to San Diego in desperate need of a win. Having lost eight straight, they sent Dick Kelley to the mound against Bob Gibson. The Cardinals scored first in the fourth. With one out, Curt Flood doubled to left. After a Vada Pinson ground out, Joe Torre singled home Flood to give St. Louis an early 1-0 lead. San Diego answered in the bottom half. May 17, 1969, San Diego: Cardinals 5, Padres 1 (box score) Clay Kirby had helped lead the Padres to victory six days earlier in St. Louis. This time, in San Diego, he faced up-and-coming left-hander Steve Carlton. Signed by the Cardinals in 1963 as an amateur free agent, Carlton first surfaced with the big club in 1965. After another cup of coffee the following season, he established himself as a rotation mainstay in 1967 and 1968.
