September 9, 1969, Houston: Astros 9, Padres 2 (box score) First, the good news: Ivan Murrell hit his third home run of the season with two out in the ninth to avoid the shutout. The bad news? Pretty much everything else. Joe Niekro started for San Diego and coughed up six runs in 4+ innings. The final batter he faced, Jimmy Wynn, launched a three-run homer to give the Astros a 6-0 lead. The Padres managed just two singles off Houston starter Larry Dierker through 8 2/3 innings. Then Jerry Morales knocked a single of his own (the first hit of what would become a 14-year career in the ...

1969: Dierker Blanks Padres

July 4, 1969, San Diego: Astros 4, Padres 0 (box score) The Padres played their first ever Independence Day game in front of nearly 18,000 fans at San Diego Stadium. Unfortunately, the only fireworks came courtesy of the Houston Astros. Larry Dierker scattered seven hits, and the Padres advanced just one runner past first base after the fourth inning. Houston, meanwhile, scored a run off Al Santorini in the first and three more (two unearned thanks to a Van Kelly error) in the fifth. That was pretty much the game. By the end of the day, San Diego had dropped its sixth straight and fallen to 27-55 on the ...

1969: Padres Drop Another Doubleheader

June 20, 1969, Houston: Astros 6, Padres 1 (box score); Astros 3, Padres 1 (box score) For the second time in four days, the Padres played two. For the second time, they found themselves overmatched. The opener pitted Clay Kirby against Larry Dierker. The Padres struck first, with Nate Colbert homering to lead off the second inning. The Astros tied things up in the bottom half on doubles by Dennis Menke and Curt Blefary. In the fourth, with the score still knotted at 1-1, Kirby's control and defense faltered. Two walks, a ...

1969: Dierker, Astros Shut Down Padres

April 23, 1969, San Diego: Astros 4, Padres 0 (box score) The Padres, perhaps feeling guilty about the eight runs they'd scored against Atlanta the previous night, put up very little fight against Larry Dierker and the Houston Astros. Dierker, who had lost to the Padres two weeks earlier, limited the home club to just two singles and two walks en route to a 4-0 victory. Clay Kirby started for San Diego and, as often was the case, struggled with his control. He walked five batters in 5 2/3 innings, and both runners that scored against him had reached base via the base on balls. No play-by-play data for this ...

1969: Padres Beat Astros Again

April 9, 1969, San Diego: Padres 2, Astros 0 (box score) After winning the first game in franchise history, the Padres made it two in a row against Houston. The Padres scored two early runs, more than enough for Johnny Podres and Tommy Sisk. In the bottom of the first inning, Roberto Pena drew a one-out walk off right-hander Larry Dierker. Tony Gonzalez followed with a single to right that advanced Pena to third. Ollie Brown then grounded to second. Joe Morgan fielded the ball and flipped to shortstop for the force, allowing Pena to score. In the second, Dierker again issued a one-out walk, this time to Ed ...
