June 18, 1969, Los Angeles: Dodgers 10, Padres 1 (box score) A day after being outscored, 18-3, in a doubleheader at Dodger Stadium, the Padres looked to salvage a split of the four-game series against their neighbors to the north. The Dodgers, it seems, had other ideas. Los Angeles struck early and often against southpaw Johnny Podres. In the bottom of the first, with Manny Mota on, Wes Parker launched a homer to left against the former Dodger. In the third inning, the home team scored three more runs, knocking Podres out of the game in the process. The Dodgers had extended their lead to 5-0, and with the ...

June 1, 1969, Montreal: Padres 5, Expos 2 (box score) In the inaugural meeting between first-year expansion teams, the Padres had gotten the early upper hand, winning two in a row at Jarry Park. In the finale, the Expos sent rookie right-hander Jerry Robertson to the mound against Johnny Podres. Nate Colbert got the party started with a leadoff home run to left in the second. The Expos responded in kind in the bottom half of the frame, with third baseman Coco Laboy doing the honors. With the score still tied, Chris Cannizzaro led off the Padres' fifth with a triple. April 21, 1969, San Diego: Braves 5, Padres 2 (box score) Back home in San Diego, the Padres welcomed the Atlanta Braves to town for a brief two-game series. The Braves were led by Hank Aaron, whose 512 career home runs placed him fifth on the all-time leaderboard behind Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Willie Mays, and of course, Babe Ruth. Johnny Podres started for the home team, while right-hander Ron Reed got the call for Atlanta. Reed had been named to the National League All-Star team as a rookie in 1968, but he'd gotten off to a rough start in his sophomore season. Today, however, it was Podres' (and the ...

April 15, 1969, Los Angeles: Dodgers 14, Padres 0 (box score) Southpaws Claude Osteen and Johnny Podres matched scoreless frames through four innings. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, the proverbial wheels fell off for Podres. With one out, Tom Haller drew a walk. Ted Sizemore, Osteen, and Willie Crawford followed with singles to put the Dodgers ahead, 2-0. After a walk to rookie right fielder Bill Russell and a ground out by Wes Parker, left fielder Andy Kosco stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam to left to break the game wide open. The Dodgers added a run in the sixth, five in the seventh, ...

April 9, 1969, San Diego: Padres 2, Astros 0 (box score) After winning the first game in franchise history, the Padres made it two in a row against Houston. The Padres scored two early runs, more than enough for Johnny Podres and Tommy Sisk. In the bottom of the first inning, Roberto Pena drew a one-out walk off right-hander Larry Dierker. Tony Gonzalez followed with a single to right that advanced Pena to third. Ollie Brown then grounded to second. Joe Morgan fielded the ball and flipped to shortstop for the force, allowing Pena to score. In the second, Dierker again issued a one-out walk, this time to Ed ...
