September 3, 1969, San Diego: Phillies 9, Padres 1 (box score) Ugly, ugly loss. Did I say ugly? The Padres scored only once. In the seventh inning, with left-hander Woodie Fryman on the mound for the visitors, San Diego parlayed an Ivan Murrell single and two Phillies errors into a run. That made the score 9-1. The rest? You don't want to know, but I'll tell you anyway. Al Santorini made the start for San Diego. Allowed single runs in the first, second, and fifth innings, and four more in the sixth. You want details. Okay, then; Deron Johnson, Ron Stone, and Don Money each collected three hits. Johnny Callison drove ...

September 1, 1969, San Diego: Padres 5, Phillies 2 (box score) After suffering through a miserable 5-22 August, the Padres opened September at home against Philadelphia. Left-hander Grant Jackson started for the visitors and failed to record a single out. Jose Arcia led off the first inning with an infield single. Roberto Pena singled to center, and Ivan Murrell tripled both of them home. A balk by Jackson plated Murrell, making the score 3-0. After Nate Colbert walked, right-hander John Boozer replaced Jackson and retired the Padres without further incident. San Diego added two runs in the fourth. Colbert drew his second walk of the game, and Ed Spiezio ...

August 23, 1969, Philadelphia: Phillies 7, Padres 6 (box score) The Padres drew first blood in this one, thanks mostly to the wildness of Philadelphia right-hander Bill Champion. Two walks, a wild pitch, and a passed ball in the first set up an RBI single by Nate Colbert. The Phillies scored a run of their own in the bottom half on singles by Tony Taylor and Dick Allen, wrapped around a Larry Hisle groundout. The home team extended its lead in the second. A two-out single off the bat of Taylor drove home two more runs, giving the Phillies a 3-1 lead. The two teams traded runs in the third. ...

The Padres drew first blood in this one. With one on and one out in the first, Ollie Brown singled to right. Al Ferrara followed with a double down the right field line that scored Brown and Roberto Pena. Working with a 2-0 lead, Kirby faced the heart of the Phillies order in the fourth. Dick Allen and Johnny Callison led off with singles. A Deron Johnson triple tied the score. After Mike Ryan grounded to third, Larry ...

June 14, 1969, San Diego: Phillies 7, Padres 5 (box score) Al Santorini faced right-hander Jerry Johnson in the second of three games at San Diego Stadium. The Phillies jumped out to an early lead courtesy of a two-out solo homer to right-center off the bat of Dick Allen in the first. The Padres wasted no time in responding. With one out in the bottom half of the inning, Roberto Pena drew a walk. The next batter, Ollie Brown, doubled to left, scoring Pena. Thanks to an Allen error on the play (apparently he threw wildly to second base), Brown also came around to score, giving the home team ...

June 13, 1969, San Diego: Phillies 6, Padres 1 (box score) The Padres looked to rebound from a series loss to Montreal. The Phillies, winners of two straight against the Dodgers after losing nine in a row, had other ideas. Right-hander Rick Wise got the start for Philadelphia, while Johnny Podres toed the slab for the home team. After an uneventful first inning, Dick Allen led off the second with a home run to left field. Then, with one out, Mike Ryan doubled. After another out, Terry Harmon singled home Ryan, with Harmon advancing all the way to third on an errant throw by center fielder Cito Gaston. A ...

June 4, 1969, Philadelphia: Padres 3, Phillies 0 (box score) The Padres entered Wednesday evening's contest having taken the first two against Philadelphia at Shibe Park. Dick Kelley and rookie right-hander Bill Champion hooked up in the finale. San Diego drew first blood. With two out in the first, Al Ferrara singled home Roberto Pena to give the Padres an early 1-0 lead. Kelley and the Padres clung to that one-run lead until the eighth, when the Phillies mounted their first serious threat of the night. Johnny Callison led off with a single to center. After a failed bunt attempt by Mike Ryan, rookie Larry Hisle reached on an ...
